Seeing as there was no attempt on his life, I'd guess a combo of the first two.

Dallas Deputy Police Chief T.W. Lawrence, head of the Police Department's homeland security and special operations divisions, said the order -- apparently made by the U.S. Secret Service -- was meant to speed up the long lines outside and fill the arena's vacant seats before Obama came on.

In 1992, when I was in high school, I went to a Clinton rally -- outdoors, in Houston Texas.

They searched us and used metal detectors on us then. They even made me prove my camcorder was real by recording a small segment, pulling the tape out, and playing it on a deck they had set up by security.

This was during the primaries...

So this isn't a new thing, by a long shot.

Where people are more obsessed with celebrity than ever and will do anything for their 15 minutes of fame.

Anyone famous has a huge bullseye on them for that reason alone.

We also have a lot more options to get out there as media becomes less and less consolidated. Rather than send bombs to people around the nation, you can make a youtube clip explaining the loss of freedom inherent with the rise of industrialization in a corporatist-socialist state.

A friend of mine was working security for it. She said they were told that it was Obama's group that requested it from the Secret Service so that the arena would be full when the cameras came on and Obama entered.

She was VERY upset, and said she was scared to death the whole time.

I read on teh intertubes that he's supposed to be shot and come back to life, so he's just following the game plan.

i remember seeing a documentary about how they were trying to kill him, but keifer bauer put a stop to that. so, that's why i'm confused... i mean, wasn't he already president?? don't we have a two term limit any more?

FTFA: "Sure," said Lawrence, when asked if he was concerned by the great number of people who had gotten into the building without being checked. But, he added, the turnout of more than 17,000 people seemed to be a "friendly crowd."

"Mr. President, you can't say that Dallas doesn't love you."

In either 93 or 94, Clinton came to my high school. We didn't have to pass through metal detectors or anything like that. There was security everywhere though.

Paranoia? Not like there's a history of black leaders (Evers, X, King) getting assassinated, is there?

Remember some years ago when everyone was talking about Colin Powell running for prez? Well apparently he ultimately didn't because his wife was terrified he'd be assassinated.

Wait until the Inauguration. Hoping againt hope that Harrison gets to keep the record for the shortest presidency, but if the secret service is backing off already, I am not going to place any large bets on that.

Some a-hole brought a prop gun (a real gun filled with lead so it couldn't fire bullets) to an assembly of people in Chicago recently. He came out from behind the speaker, showed the gun to the crowd and walked off. Apparently he was trying to prank the crowd by riffing on the NIU shooting, but nobody's really sure of his motives.

Can you imagine what would happen if a guy brought a prop gun into a huge rally? You could have people being crushed to death trying to run out, or a shoot-out with the cops. Not good.

generaltimmy 2008-02-22 12:58:19 PM
Well, Obama would use the force to stop the bullet, whisper in the would be assassin's ear and convert him to an Obama supporter.

xtex: So this isn't a new thing, by a long shot.

I went to Clinton's first inauguration, Constitution Ave or Pennslyvania Ave. Anyway security was *ridiculous* They got out of the limos for maybe 20 yards at a time. Basically it was a limo parade. And it was cold.

Living in DC I saw a lot of VIP motorcades. Its cool the first few times you see it but after that its just inconvenient.

robsul82 [TotalFark] 2008-02-22 12:58:42 PM
Can the mob change the parade route? Can the mob make the driver slow to 5 miles an hour? We are through the looking glass here people! Up is down...and black is white!

In one of the old Subgenius books there's a picture of a crazy looking man holding a sign that says "Welcome to Dallas JFK and beautiful Jackie".

If I had that picture, I'd post it here.

I_Approve_Of_This_Message 2008-02-22 01:02:56 PM
I was a volunteer at the Seattle rally that packed about 18,000 people into Key Arena. While bags and signs were not allowed, there was no metal detectors or wands, pretty much just a visual search, unless you were trying to get to the floor...then you got treatment just short of what the TSA does at the airport.

The Secret Service detail was very pronounced. There was at least twenty watching from the suites. I had the feeling that they could pick out a suspicious individual in no time, and have him or her dragged off way before Obama showed up.

I'm reminded of an eddie murphy joke.

really though that's not normal procedure, I don't get it.

they said it seemed like a 'friendly crowd', but it's not like anyone thought the whole crowd was gonna rush him, it's that one nutjob they're looking out for.

it just seems sloppy and unprofessional.

schief2 [TotalFark] 2008-02-22 01:04:43 PM
For what it's worth, I went to a John Edwards rally and a Huckabee one last month (yeah, I know, but it wasn't because I'm a supporter of either). I had a large camera bag full of gear that nobody gave a second glance to, and I ended up close enough at various points that I could have reached out and pimp-slapped either one.

Of course, the fact that neither had a chance in hell of winning might have something to do with it.

Ok, if he gets shot and easily survives then we need to check him head to toe for some markings.

"OBAMA WILL DIE, KKK FOREVER," concludes a Feb. 15 post by "Rodney" to a blog run by a person identified only as Strider333. Above that signoff, Rodney wrote: "The KKK or someone WILL assassinate Obama! If we get a attractive and successful African-American President all you attractive and successful African-American's [sic] will think you've won and that the WHITE people will have to bow to you[.] fark THAT." (from here)

Plus, there have been discussions on the KKKs forums about what "must be done" if Obama gets the nomination.

This may be 21st century, but there are some people in the south who still think it's the 19th.

Dosen't Texas allow you to pack at an event in a public facility

focus.aps.org

Q: Where can I not take my handgun?
A: Handguns and other weapons can not be carried at schools or on school buses, at polling places, in courts and court offices, at racetracks and at secured airport areas. The law also specifically prohibits handguns from businesses where alcohol is sold if more than half of their revenue is from the sale of alcohol for on-premises consumption, and from locations where high school, college or professional sporting events are taking place. You may not carry handguns in hospitals or nursing homes, amusement parks, places of worship or at government meetings if signs are posted prohibiting them. Businesses also may post signs prohibiting handguns on their premises based on criminal trespass laws.

Q: If licensed, can I carry more than one handgun?
A: The law does not appear to limit the number of guns you may carry.
