All those songs from the same crappy movie and not one nomination for Eddie Vedder's work on Into the Wild? Wow, that's pretty stupid.

"Falling Slowly" is a wonderful song and should be a lock for the Oscar. It is far better in the actual movie than it is on the soundtrack. The scene in the music shop where they perform it is amazing.

I agree with the first and third sentences.

It ought to win, which means it probably won't.

Yep.
"Falling" is a great song and "Once" is a great movie, and it's a rarity for any good song to get noticed by Oscars. So just for that alone, this year is better than most.

That was pretty effed up. It was worth it just to see all the old people in the audience and the "OMGWTF? Get in the car!" looks on their faces.

Glen should win. By far the best song. And also a genuinely nice farking guy.

I recommend seeing the Frames live if you get the chance. They're well worth it.

That would be because Eddie Vedder farking sucks. Pearl Jam might be remotely listenable if they fired his talentless ass, I don't know what the hell he was hoping to accomplish by doing solo work.

1977 - the theme to Star Wars lost to g*damn You Light Up My Life.

Amy Adams can win over that strumma-strumma guy. If I want that kind of noise I'll put on an old Cat Stevens album.

I am not a big Pearl Jam fan, but this (new window)and this (new window) pretty much prove the guy can write good songs. And this is newer Pearl Jam. (well not that new)

Blame Canada was one of the best nominations in recent years (although Uncle F*cker was a better song).

Falling Slowly? A great song? Well, it's ok but it's very wet and the video made me want to barf. Urggh..all that 'meaningful' gazing.

If a song is even so much as nominated for an award you can bet that it will be formulaic, safe, sterile and dull.

/There, I said it!

My bet is that, despite its crapiness, it was voted for largely as a joke. Anyone saying "WTF? That song sucks!" is the butt-end of said joke.

Ultimate FAIL on Oscar's part. They are in a need of reforming their music/foreign language categories. Too often, the most deserving candidates are getting snubbed.

Johnny Greenwood FTW in my mind. Without him, I seriously think the movie would slide down a notch or two on the 'greatness pole'

I believe 2000 was when "Blame Canada" from South Park was up for it. Lost to Phil Farking Collins though.

/beaten by the Canadian with that song from that movie about the boat ride run amiss.

Yeah, okay, that song did kick ass.

Ditto for Sondre Lerche for his stuff in 'Dan in Real Life' (which was a pretty lousy movie, that is too much-loved. How I feel about Juno!)

madden101 2008-02-22 12:20:04 PM
From the looks of it, Enchanted was the only film to have any music in it over the past year.

Ditto on Eddie Vedder. I was never a huge PJ fan, but I really enjoy his work on the Into the Wild soundtrack, especially "Hard Sun."

I also enjoyed the music in Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, though I suppose that music wasn't serious enough for an Oscar.

Cotton Rinkenbolts [TotalFark] 2008-02-22 12:53:21 PM
No mention yet of Eminem winning for rapping about mom's spaghetti. That was sucktacular. Also, when Enya's May It Be was beat out by farking Randy Newman. I'm not much of an Enya fan, but at least it was a song for Lord of the Rings. Then they tried to make it up to Peter Jackson 2 years later by giving the Oscar to the Eurythmics. Gotta love the sympathy nods.

Serious like that 36 Mafia song from Crash.

Scores aren't eligible for Song of the Year Oscars anyway. Songs from soudtracks are.

Put me down as another There Will Be Blood soundtrack fan. It's one of those scores that's so good you miss it during the silent scenes in the movie.
