TVT?... TVT?... what record label is that? Is it the one that had Sevendust and Guided by Voices? Or am I way off?

nutmilk 2008-02-21 04:03:32 PM
trent recorded his second record - broken - pretty much in secrecy because tvt was screwing him so bad after his first record - pretty hate machine.

he ripped on gottlieb in the press a lot during the promotion of hiw third record, the downward spiral, stating that tvt wouldnt let him release an alnum unless it was to their strict requirements. i think i recall him saying at one point that he wouldnt even be allowed to hand out his music for free (ironic given that he is/has considered doing that recently).

but not like he was bitter or anything, right?

TVT was (is?) sort of a clearing house distributor type label. Guided by Voices were on it for one or two albums before heading back to Matador. Snoop Dogg was on it for a while, too, and I think Pretty Hate Machine (NIN) was on that label.

Reznor is a Genius. I never understood the hype behind NIN, but I get it now. His viral marketing campaign behind Year Zero was genius, and the fact that he's still releasing relevant music for over 15 years says something.

Reznor hasn't made a good song since "Closer." He is way past his prime, and what I heard of the new album, it just sucked. Still, "hurt" is one of the best songs ever. But still, his new album is a steaming pile of suck.

Ha... you must be one of those people who used to come up to me in the DJ booth and say "Will you play that nine inch nails I wanna f*ck you song?"

there were better songs on that same album.

Don't care so much that you took the time to edit and then let me know that you don't care? If you didn't care, you wouldn't be here.

TVT was originally known in the 80s as Tee Vee Toons, responsible for those annoying mail-order commercials selling CDs of television themes. At some point they started signing artists, of which NIN was one of the first. The rest is history, er infamy.

Here's some math for you

Skinny puppy - everything challenging about skinny puppy + Teen Angst + a disco beat = NIN

NIN has always been Skinny Puppy dumbed down for retards. But with that thumpa thumpa.

But..but...some people like to get down and boogie!

You know, since thumpa thumpa leads to humpa humpa. Anyway, that's what those superconservative evangelicals are always saying.

have you not listened to NIN since Pretty Hate Machine? Even then, I'd substitute Depeche Mode for Skinny Puppy (though they were obviously an influence). Hell, even The Fragile, as overly long as it is, obviously had the right idea in not being yet another industrial rehash. And I'd definitely take YZ over any new Skinny Puppy (Which is just flat awful).

Not quite sure about the hate over Year Zero. Do you like the song "Burn"? YZ is basically a whole album in that vein.

No, I've never requested NIN, and no there are not any better songs on that album. He has like 2 or 3 good songs per album, remember? The rest is album fodder.

WHich is how we like it, thank you very much. Who cares if Skinny Puppy is scary and 'challenging'? It's not challenging anyone if no one is listening to it in the first place.

Funny that SP always seems to get mentioned in a NIN thread. Went to see them in '88 and some obscure band opened up for them......N.I.N. Most of the audience was like "What the Hell is this dance crap?". I will say that he has evolved and I do like alot of his stuff since PHM.

RobThomas PowerHour: TVT?... TVT?... what record label is that? Is it the one that had Sevendust and Guided by Voices? Or am I way off?

Just to (fully) answer your question, Sevendust was indeed on TVT for their first four (well, five if you count the live acoustic) albums, before doing their own imprint.

As I once was ridiculed for saying amongst my friends, "I love NIN, but I'm not on the Trent = God level or anything".

You mean like the last two SP albums?
I like Skinny Puppy AND Nine Inch Nails. Does that make me retarded? Or does it just mean that you're a braying jackass that insists on marginalizing music to the point where you feel you must denigrate anyone whose tastes aren't identical to your own?

I did not like Pretty Hate Machine. At all. I like the rest of NIN. But I can only take so much of "gray would be the color... if I had a heart!" and "I'm slippin' on the tears you made me cry!" before going insane. Trent is not the best lyricist in the world, but honestly. Some of the stuff on PHM is extremely silly and extremely dated.

The people in this thread bringing out the old Skinny Puppy argument can EABOD. Nothing post-PHM sounds anything like a "dumbed-down" SP.

Agree 100% (I refuse to say "this").

I like Pretty Hate Machine but it's still my least favorite NIN album. I love Year Zero to the point where it's easily turning into one of my favorite albums ever. Trent's managed to do what few other artists have done this far into their career; continue to stay fresh and relevant and evolve with each release.

The other band people trump out in any NIN related thread is Ministry, which is funny since the closest Reznor ever got to sounding like Ministry is on Broken, and even then the song structures, vocal style, guitar tone, etc are all very different. It gets to the point where you might as well say Metallica ripped off Black Sabbath because they're both metal bands.

And I've got nothing but joy at TVT's coming downfall.

Yes it does. Anyone that likes NIN is retarded.

I kinda like the first album though. Then again anyone with Adrien Sherwood and the rest of Tackhead playing should be able to put something good out.

Actually NIN reminds me a bit of the Violent Femmes. One very good album, then they should have stopped.

I like PHM, but it definitely has not aged well.

The only SP rip-off Trent may be guilty of is sampling Dig It for "Down In It"... and I can guarantee that few realised that Trent did sample that until they go back and listen for it. I think I owned PHM and Mind: TPI for a few years before I realised that.

I met trent once. It was about 4 am and I got up to find my roadie roommate hanging out with this pasty guy in the living room. I sat there in my bathrobe and we talked music a bit and did a few lines. Then I went to work.

Didn't find out till later he was famous and not just some skinny loser. Nice guy. I've met few others who like me, are such huge David Bowie fans.

Aughsum 2008-02-25 03:15:50 PM
again.. music tastes are subjective. anyone who considers someone else "retarded" for favoring one type of music over another is, him or herself, "retarded."

/nin = some of the best music I've ever heard
// trent has become popular but hating on nin because it isn't obscure enough doesn't make you omnipitent, it makes you an attention whore.
