.I sincerely apologize for what I have done- I did not realize what it was
until after the fact. I know that there is a war between pedestrians/
bicyclists and automobiles, and what I did constitutes high [t]reason, and for
this I am truly sorry. I return this bike, along with one of my most cherished
possessions in respect to your memorial, and as a guarantee that your efforts
have impacted at least one life; mine - Bradford (The one who stole this
bike)."

Damn right there is a war!

I'm gonna get into my BMW and go piss off more obnoxious, traffic-law breaking bicyclists who knowingly put themselves in danger and then blame drivers for the accidents they cause.

Militant bicyclists are scum.

The thief obviously read the Fark thread about that preacher who turned himself in for a murder he committed years ago.

I rode a bicycle to work for a year and followed the law perfectly. 99% of drivers were great... but I had a half-dozen verbal altercations with people who just didn't realize bikes are allowed on the road too. It was just too much grief... now I drive.

/doesn't live in Portland
//few bikers here follow the rules

FarkinPcola 2008-02-20 03:00:45 PM
No doubt dr-shotgun. Fark the cyclists who insist that they be considered equals to the cars on the roads while they disobey red lights and proper turning procedures because 'they're on a bike'.

It's as if they want the best of both the pedestrian and automotive worlds.

nashBridges: No no. Traffic stolen killed the cyclist. It only wounded the memorial.

I disagree. Traffic stolen clearly killed the Ghost Bike. Allow me to perform a postmortem:

1. Ghost Bike placed as a memorial to a cyclist
2. Killed by traffic stolen

Therefore, Ghost Bike (placed as a memorial to a cyclist) was killed by traffic stolen.

Whenever I come across a Fark link with an "Error establishing a database connection" message I make sure to hold my Shift key and click the Reload button on my browser a good 5-10 times before closing the page. Sure it's the Internet equivalent of kicking a man when he's down but it brings me pleasure nonetheless.

Roadside memorials are a god damn menace and should be outlawed. We have all of this valuable real estate called "cemeteries." If you want a memorial for a loved one to exist for all eternity (or until they want to build a new football stadium in 120 years) you stick it there.

I am tired of dodging your "memorial" when it blows out onto the highway. Littering fines should cover this crap...

Having to accept the death of a loved one is a horrible experience I wish upon no one, but I assure you that you can do it without building a shanty town out of fake flowers and a cockeyed cross made out of garden stakes.

Hender [TotalFark] 2008-02-20 03:15:31 PM
It's a pretty big issue in Portland. A few years ago, something like 14 cyclists were killed by drivers here in Portland, and since Portland prides itself on being very bike-friendly, there was a real rift that developed between motorists and cyclists that hasn't closed yet. The Willamette Week newspaper did a cover story by one of their reporters who had been hit and injured by a car that year, and there was a lot of backlash about it from both sides. The driver of the car who hit her had been unapologetic which only stoked the fire, and he tried to blame her for the accident even though it occurred during an illegal turn.

That sort of attitude is seen as the status quo by a lot of cyclists, just as the cyclists who disobey the laws of traffic are seen as the status quo by a lot of motorists. There's fault on both sides, really. I see cyclists riding up fricking Hawthorne at rush hour, when there's a dedicated street for an east/west bike route literally two blocks to the north on Salmon. I see motorists try and run bikes off the road or just give them the finger as the go past. My girlfriend almost got repeated honks and a finger for riding across the Sellwood Bridge--on the pedestrian path! One time while running I saw a woman biatch out a cyclist who was riding in the regular traffic lane--not on the side, but in the middle. Contrary to the motorist's belief, that's perfectly legal, and since it was heavy traffic it's not like she was slowing down other cars.

There's a ghost bike about 10 blocks from my apartment that I walk past on a regular basis, and even though it's been two years since the accident, his family and friends are still leaving trinkets, pictures and letters, and they even planted flowers in a small patch of dirt. I didn't think of it as a dangerous intersection (SE 26th and Stark), but I almost got run over by a car there myself when I was running.

TheNewJesus: Roadside memorials are a god damn menace and should be outlawed.

I couldn't agree more.

Near home, there was a memorial for a couple of schoolkids who decided that a Ford Fiesta could take a hairpin bend at 90. Three days after the flowers started arriving, another kid from the same school stopped to place flowers, stepped back to admire the display and...you can guess the rest.

Darwin's always watching.
