Che Stadium?

On their second visit to the States in early 1965 they played the world's first outdoor rock and roll concert at Che Stadium (named after the Cuban guerrilla leader Che Stadium). As a security precaution the Rutles arrived at the stadium by helicopter a day early. This enabled them to be safely out of the place before the audience came in. It was a brilliant public relations coup. The kids were screaming so hard that thousands never noticed the difference. Promoter Syd Bottle described it as the most exciting twenty minutes of his life.

Time to update "We Didn't Start the Fire" and call it a career, Billy.

"Superman was played by a guy named Routh/O-ba-ma smacked Hillary IN THE MOUTH!"

Well if the wrinkly boomers are selling out a stadium, at least it's this one instead of Jimmy Buffet. Jeez the Parrothead stuff is embarrassing. Bunch of fat SUV driving Republicans claiming temporary allegiance to a Florida hippie.

"Having sold out his July 16 show at Shea Stadium in less than an hour, Billy Joel has added a second show, on July 18."

Doesn't sound much like anyone's suffering. He puts on a good show.

I long for the days when his latest hits didn't have anything to do with his car.

Give me a break, Billy Joel is a great entertainer. I don't care if he's an alcoholic or not, guy can crank out a good song...

/Get off my lawn before I start the fire...

Nestea Plunge: What's the matter with the songs he's singin'
Can't you tell that they're pretty lame
After listenin' to a couple albums
Well, they all start to sound the same

So he tried to change his musical style
He tossed all his ballads in the circular file
Then he found the punk sound
Breakin' ground all around
It's still Billy Joel to me

-- "Weird Al" Yankovic

WIN.

/Billy does put on a good show though

He will give them some good advice. And anyone who goes to a Billy Joel concern for any reason except "I got free Billy Joel tickets and I have nothing better to do tonight" needs good advice.

That's weird...I've got "Sleeping with the Television On" playing just as I was typing this. I doubt he'll do that one at Shea, though.

Billy's recorded some crap, and he's even admitted that. But a lot of his catalog is pretty awesome. And the guy is monstrously talented.

I can think of a lot worse concerts to attend.

So, everybody that thought they were going to the last show at the stadium is now going to the second to last show. I know it doesn't *really* matter but it does kind of suck. They should have sold the last date first and then, if needed, sell the prior dates.

Billy farked this, so I can't make fun of him. Even if that period sparked Uptown Girl - he deserves forgiveness. Just gaze at the picture and you will understand.

Imagine Billy walking into rehearsal the morning after bagging Christie Brinkley.
"Hey guys! I bagged Christie Brinkley last night!"
"yeah..right. sure you did, Bill...you butt-ugly hounddog baggy-eyed fark."
"No. Really! I did! Me and Christie Brinkley!"
"Hahahaha! Good one, Billy. Now let's get to work."

/Billy gets no respect

Amen to that. Just ask Mark Gastineau. And Kid Rock.

I like how he turned from skinny rock dude into this fat Italian mobster.

I don't hate Billy Joel (he has some great songs, but some bad ones too), but living on Long Island, it is easy to get really annoyed by how so many people here (generally those who don't know any of the bands I listen to) think the guy is the greatest musician who ever lived.
To speak ill of Billy Joel on Long Island is blasphemy.

And while we are talking about Billy Joel, here is a Link to a funny piece of writing by Michael Ian Black entitled "What I Would Be Thinking About If I Were Billy Joel Driving Toward A Party Where I knew There Was Going to Be a Piano"

Jim R: Billy puts on a great show.

Yep. I've seen him twice recently, once solo and once with Elton John. He sounds absolutely fantastic, and that's even more obvious when he's paired with Elton, who can still play the piano like a master but can't sing anymore.

He still has a lot of energy, and does a great job of engaging the crowd.

Badafuco 2008-02-20 02:36:41 PM
So you're putting on a 2nd show, huh.

You had to be a big shot, didn't ya,
you had to open up your mouth.

davynelson: I like how he turned from skinny rock dude into this fat Italian mobster.

At the most recent show I saw, he introduced himself by saying, "Hi, I'm Billy Joel's dad."

Very cool art. Talented chick. Of course, you're all budding Picassoes, so I can't compete with your expert opinions.

I'll admit it: I'm a Billy Joel fan. Not tremendously, but I like him.

/Family Guy's caveman "cover" of The Longest Time is still hysterical.

Dammit, I always liked "Allentown" even as it depressed me with its constant FM rotation.
