Well... it's hard to admit but it was 30 years ago for a lot of those songs. I don't know what the exact definition of an oldie is, but I'd say that once you cross that quarter of a century mark you have to be close.

/Good tag subby. It is scary *sob*

AuntofDogface [TotalFark] 2008-02-19 05:21:09 PM
Shiat... 30 years... Damn... yup, those are officially "oldies", and I'm officially feeling very, very old.....

/has memories of partying to both of those songs

WQRV-FM in Huntsville, Ala., formerly an oldies station, changed to Classic Hits two years ago. They dropped the '60s

If I was in their venue, I would be all over them for dropping the 60's. IMHO, that was a very important era in music.

Y'come and gooooOOOOOooo...
Love would be ea-zeee if colours were like mah dreeeeams..

I was like 5 when these songs were popular, and still thought you guys looked effin' homo in those clothes you wore back then.

clobberella 2008-02-19 05:35:39 PM
They changed the format of the radio stations around here at the New Year. The oldies station plays mostly 70's and 80's (up to '89). Nothing that came out after I was born should be an oldie. I'm only 24 damn it!

/it's unavoidable
//just get used to it *sigh*

I'm pretty sure that most of us weren't trying to look like Boy George back then.

I recently heard "Cats in the Cradle" on a local oldies station. The Ugly Kid Joe version.

That's the problem, though. Is "oldies" 50's and 60's music, or is "oldies" 25-30 year old (and possibly older) music?

This is similar to the problem with "alternative" and "indie" music. Once it's mainstream, what do you call the next big thing?

FWIW I see more radio stations just stating the time period they use, so there are stations that come right out and say "80's" or "70's and 80's," while there are also stations that do play anything older than 25ish years, those stations include the 60's but less and less on the actual playlist.

What made me feel old was seeing posts on the "80's" USENET groups from elementary school kids asking for pointers on having a great costume for "80's day" at school. Of course I remember having "50's day" at school (in DC, in the 1970's) but that seemed like ancient history to me then.

In Japan this year was a big "oooh, old" milestone, as the first kids to be born in the current era ("Heisei") had their coming of age ceremonies.

You know when it really hurts?
You're in the grocery store, drug store, etc., and you're whistling with the song playing. The original version. My music is muzak.
Then there's the insurance commercial:
"If you were born between 1933 and 1964..."

Pretty much, nope. I'm sure I listened to music before, but the first popular music I remember hearing was the Macarena.

I knew I was old when I heard Welcome To The Jungle on a classic rock station right after something by The Doors. I don't think any songs I ever heqrd when they first came out should be referred to as oldies.

Sad thing is, a lot of people won't even listen to Boy Georgeo's singing, he's actually a very good singer. And as for Culture Club, not that bad of a bad.

Roto-Rot 2008-02-19 11:24:03 PM
Up until a few years ago, my brother thought that "Caribbean Queen" was sung as "Parachute Twist."

I get lyrics confused sometimes, but that's just sad, especially after almost 25 years.

I feel your pain. I am terrible at hearing lyrics.

Do a web search on "mondegreen" and you'll find there are other people out there with that problem, as well as laugh your ass off.

What is it with all this angst? Didn't you guys out grow that at 17? shiat, how can you read Fark and feel old??

My first musical memory was "One eyed one horned flying purple people eater." My mother's sang to me as a kid and she loved

Alan Sherman
Tim Leher
and...Dr. Demento.

I still know all the word to Hungarina Goulash by heart.

Still, I love disco the best. I don't care what anyone else says but it was the best thing that has ever happened to us Gen Xers.
Well, that and Weird Al

I think it's awful insensitive to play Caribbean Queen so soon after Operation Hell on Earth.

That's nothing. I heard a "classic rock" station play Nirvana and Pearl Jam ... five years ago.

My earliest recorded musical memory is Patti Page singing Tennessee Waltz, which we had on 78 (that's a speed at which records were played). We had to watch the record spin by candlelight, this was so long ago. I still have this record.

My earliest radio musical memory might be Standing On The Corner by the Four Lads. That and Elvis's Hound Dog. Both songs made a mighty impression on my sweaty kid mind.

My earliest memory, as far as music, is Help by The Beatles. I must have been about 5 years old, but I sure as hell don't consider myself old!

The 70's was a great decade for music, and that includes disco.

80s' music as oldies is old news.

Several years ago (2003 or maybe 2002) I heard my first "classic alternative" station. Of course, that name is just a way of not saying "90s' oldies".

Van Halen - Jump

For the record for the Metallically inclined individuals from my age bracket (17-29)

(1988) (Hair long enough to hang yourself)

(1998) (Going bald... Chops it all off.)

www.slayersaves.com

(2008) (More flames than a '32 Ford in a ZZ Top video. Tattoos or hair? Tattoos win, apparently.)

www.slayersaves.com

/Still plays guitar well (by that I mean he will melt your face at 500 feet. - apologies to the D.) enough he's still the 5th spot (if he ever wants to) on the G4. (Vai "For The Love of God", Satriani "Surfing With The Alien, Johnson "Cliffs of Dover", Malmsteen "Black Star/Arpeggios From Hell" are the G4... i.e. the greatest living instrumental guitarists.)

//Worth noting; asked Clapton to teach him his style and played it perfectly in 5 hours, even though he always says he's "Not a music theory geek."

Jesus Christ. I was already working my first job when that song hit big. I really didn't think I was that old. My first musical memory is "Sweet Dreams" by the Eurythmics, and they're still a hip, new, up-and-coming band...aren't they?

/this is worse than that thread where I found out that earrings on guys = considered "too 90's" by most people

...I also can't believe I did my old pet peeve of typing "90's" instead of "'90s."

Going senile now, too.
