Is this in the Guiness Book of World Records (pardon the pun)?

433 [TotalFark] 2008-02-18 11:24:21 PM
If it's the single for "Rocket" by the Smashing Pumpkins, I'll sell... something for it.

BTW, the most valuable record ever pressed is a Beatles record, which is 3 different colors. IIRC, it was pressed by an employee who was not supposed to do that. I'm sure someone who knows more about it will come along. The colors came about because of a switch in the colors during the pressing process.

nashBridges: That's pretty farking impressive. The Library of Congress or the Smithsonian should pick it up just as reference material.

I agree. Is there a musical equivalent to the Library of Congress? I'd like to think of a place where you could walk in, request ANY song, wait a bit, then hear it. By "any," I mean, any preserved recording in the history of man, right down to the wax cylinders in Dracula.

paulseta [TotalFark] 2008-02-18 11:41:38 PM
If it doesn't have The Shaggs - Philosophy Of The World, then I don't want to know about it.

timharrod: 3 Million dollars? Whoa, wait just a minute. Is this a smoke-free home?

Perhaps there is some kind of humorous slant you can take on this auction, and fashion it into some kind of article for a parody site...

"Man buys 3 million dollars worth of pretension and says it's worth every penny I refuse to touch."

nashBridges:
Moby may be the most famous DJ to use the recordings they have. From Wikipedia:

Both Play and 18 included many samples from a Library of Congress record folio of Alan Lomax recordings from 1943 (pops)

Their collection could be better. I could see this purchase as a way to fill in the holes in their collection.

I remember when he drew heavy criticism for that for the album "Play." People piled on the "sampling is not art" tip and claimed he owed all his fortunes to Alan Lomax. Then it was argued that the field recordings of negro spirituals and such were, in turn, the Moby of the time. But that doesn't matter. What matters is that every song on Play was licensed. And that's exceedingly noteworthy.

I really hope a good steward picks this up.

Or DJ Shadow. Fark, just GIVE DJ Shadow all of it, and then wait.

Didn't the big eBay strike start today? This would be a good reason for eBay to say it didn't work. Wonder how often items of this amount get sold.

I own about 30 records, mostly from Faithless and other Cheeky/Rollo type artists, but no record player. One day, I too will be fully retro.

I wonder if an [original?] copy of the Great Lost Genesis "Live" 1974 Double Record Master Disc[s] with song intros and "Supper's Ready" is in there somewhere?

For you baby farkers, records were 16, 33 1/3, 45 and 78 rpm.

Yes! This! I saw DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist's new show last week, and it was the best display of DJing anyone has ever seen. I don't care who you've seen, what concerts you've been to, unless you've seen those two together you've never seen DJs play like that. 4 decks EACH at the same time, in addition to a guitar pedal for each, and they're playing simultaneously using only 45s.

Where's Paul Allen to pick this one up? He seems to like music and would probably throw down a few million for it.

I'd love the same thing, but with movies. My greatest pleasure would be to be able to see whichever movie I wish on a whim, just because I KNOW that I've got it somewhere.

Also, I'd like to know why he's selling it all.

Q: How big is the warehouse this collection is stored in?
A: The collection presently occupies about 16,000 square feet. It could be stored in a somewhat smaller area with a bit more efficient use of space.

Damn. Puts the record collection we have here at work to shame.

How many do you think you could actually listen to in your lifetime? How many brilliant "grower" albums would you never appreciate because you only had time to listen to it once?

It's a neat collection for sure. But if anybody buys this with the intention of keeping it to themselves, they deserve a big ole cock punch.

All I can think of is that scene from High Fidelity:

Woman: What do you think?
Rob: It's the best collection I've ever seen.
Woman: Give me fifty bucks and they're all yours.

...(they haggle about the price and the husband off in Jamaica)

Rob: Can I buy this Otis Redding single off you?
Woman: Sure. Ten cents.
Rob: Oh, come on! Let me give you ten dollars for this, and you can give the rest away for all I care.
Woman: Okay. Because you took the trouble to come up here. And because you've got principles. But that's it. I'm not selling them to you one by one.

Hmmmm, I see the lines, I'm reading between them

way to many records to ever buy individually, or sort out or listen to.

"many thousands of duplicate copies"

sale includes "ownership of the owner's six publishing companies and eight independent record labels"

This sounds like a geezer trying to offload a record company's warehouse-load of unsold stock.

Oh, this, this, THIS!

It's so bizarre to me why people horde music in order to accumulate massive collections. Why have it if you're never going to listen to it, or listen to it once? For bragging rights? I don't get it.

Seriously, if you haven't listened to everything in your music library all the way through at least once, you're doing it wrong. If that's too daunting a task, do you really need it in the first place?
