That's not saying much when their one hit is just a rip-off of someone else's hit.

dickkead [TotalFark] 2008-02-18 10:55:36 AM
It's pretty bad when your band is a "one hit wonder" and the one hit wasn't even yours to begin with.

/They suck, deal with it.

kblair4 [TotalFark] 2008-02-18 10:56:34 AM
their name is pretty cool though...

BobtheFascist 2008-02-18 10:56:41 AM
They did a pretty good job on that track. Rest of the CD was "meh".

luckybob343 2008-02-18 11:20:12 AM
The fact that they survive a bus accident and Cliff Burton doesn't says more about musical fate than I care to think about right now.

Bonanza Jellybean 2008-02-18 11:20:24 AM
I saw them a couple years ago (not by design, they opened for 311). They were dreadful.

Sybarite [TotalFark] 2008-02-18 11:20:59 AM
One of the better one hit wonder with a cover song groups. Other groups I can think of in this category:

Blue Monday - Orgy
Tainted Love - Soft Cell
I Want Candy - Bow Wow Wow
Saturday Night - Ned's Atomic Dustbin

SuburbanCowboy 2008-02-18 11:23:06 AM
Ned's Atomic Dustbin had a lot more going on than that one hit.

The Glass Dragon 2008-02-18 11:27:05 AM
I actually liked their first disc. Movies was a decent tune.

Farkn Yaj Yenrac 2008-02-18 11:28:42 AM
I saw them open for 311 not too long after that song came out. They were already bitter about it and were pissy about not playing it. They wouldn't even call it by name, just referred to it as 'that song'. I would have felt bad for them, but their attitudes and half-assed performance didn't offer anything to change my mind.

What does that say about Marilyn Manson:
Tainted Love
Sweet Dreams
Highway to Hell
Another Brick in the Wall.

The guy has more covers (which he does well) than originals.

Nah, he sucks too.

I saw them live once when I was in NYC with nothing else to do... They were kind of fun, but nothing memorable. I assumed they dried up and blew away after that, so whatever...

rikkards - Manson has a lot of original songs that were quite popular as well as covers... Alien Ant Farm, not so much.

Maduin 2008-02-18 12:00:30 PM
They were chewed up and spit out by the corporate machine.

Step 1: Find edgier Backstreet Boys/NKOTB
Step 2: Run their "songs" through pro-tools with a corporate approved producer.
Step 3: Film "hit video" pay eMpTyV to play it.
Step 4: Put them out on a cocaine fueled tour that only ends after the lead singer drops, onstage or otherwise, then send them into the studio again.

Rickenbacker 2008-02-18 12:03:30 PM
I thought their cover rocked. But, it was a novelty. Novelty hits do not lead to a long career.

LewDux 2008-02-18 12:08:17 PM
Just came here to say that Alien Ant Farm, Michael Jackson, Cliff Burton, Orgy, Soft Cell, Bow Wow Wow, Ned's Atomic Dustbin, 311, Marilyn Manson and Backstreet Boys/NKOTB suck

If you're going to a 311 concert, seeing Alien Ant Farm as the opening act is the least of your worries.

Was the "Stupid" tag on vacation?

Sybarite: One of the better one hit wonder with a cover song groups.

That's funny, since all the other groups you named are much better than Alien Ant Farm.

Also, Johnny Cash managed to do two albums full of kick-ass covers. One of the greatest cover artists ever actually. He even managed to make a U2-song sound less like whining and more like music.

TheSilverOne 2008-02-18 12:19:17 PM
I sang their cover of Smooth Criminal at karaoke once. I brought chairs up on the stage with me so I could do the lean at the appropriate moments. It was the proudest moment of my life which is really really really really REALLY sad.

Lee's_Austin 2008-02-18 12:23:30 PM
And really, wasn't it the dancing kid from the video that made the song popular?

Alien Ant Farm had a second hit, and their first album is good though the slower songs aren't as good.

Bleah. I was 10 feet from the stage last summer for Matisyahu and 311 in Westport in KC. Good times.

NeuroticRocker [recently expired TotalFark] 2008-02-18 12:38:30 PM
actually, I didn't care for them till I heard "attitude" on their first album

that song is really good and poignant. its a powerful song with a strong message.

and I forget the name of it, but the track that follows that.

7 & 8

pretty decent songs

NeuroticRocker [recently expired TotalFark] 2008-02-18 12:40:49 PM
for all the socially innept people on fark (myself included) should listen to "attitude"

its about how he really liked this girl, but chased her away, and the song is sorta an apology and sorta a "fark you".

I'm not doing it justice. just check it out.

/not plugging aaf....just that one song

The Grateful Dead seem to have done pretty well despite all the covers they did.

FeedTheCollapse 2008-02-18 01:24:41 PM
I don't mind covers, but I was sick of the late-90s/early-00 where every other act's hit was either sampled or a cover song.

in retrospect, I'd almost prefer it to what constitutes pop music now.

jake3988 2008-02-18 01:26:06 PM
Sure, it was ok. Only that Michael Jackson can actually sing and dance. Stressing the singing. Stressing the dance-moves.

Stressing the kick-ass 8m video.

/Alien Ant Farm sucks, is my point.

DavidKirkBeale, becaue you asked for it; Link (new window)

Always thought the guy looked like Billy Zane There were better bands outta Riverside, like the Skeletones, Smokestacks-were AAF the ones feuding with the Voodoo Glow Skulls?

Look, if you really want to hear a cover band that farking rocks, download pretty much any cool song you recognize by "Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies"

I'm not trying to be a dick, but I'm very picky about good music, and well, if people like to listen to untalented bands, so be it.

/But I can still make fun of them for it.
//Just like you'd make fun of me if I liked Kidz Bop.

A good cover. If only they could write halfway decent songs.

kunibob 2008-02-18 01:48:54 PM
There was an Alien Ant Farm song that was all over the radio stations in NZ in 2003-2004, and I can't remember what it was now. Used to drive me absolutely batty. Wasn't "Smooth Criminal," either.

I'm glad I've forgotten.

NeuroticRocker [recently expired TotalFark] 2008-02-18 01:55:26 PM
one of the best cover songs I have ever heard was Jose Gonzales's cover of "Heartbeats" by The Knife.

you may recognize this song (the cover) from the 2 minute Bravia ad that used 500,000 supeballs on the streets of San Fransisco.

the original is electronic and harsh.

Jose's is pure gold-- gentle solo acoustic. turns it from a trainwreck into a masterpiece.

also the Stubbs The Zombie videogame soundtrack is all modern bands covering 50s era songs..

Death Cab For Cutie does Earth Angel

Flaming Lips does If I Only Had A Brain

Cake does Strangers In The Night

Ben Kweller does Lollipop

Clem Snide does Tears On My Pillow

the whole album is good

/didnt play the game

OK, you showing love for "Me First and the Gimme Gimme's" makes up for the music snob tone to some of your posts.

As a parent I can honestly say that Kidz Bop may actually be made of pure evil. Seriously, the cd's are made of the same stuff as the bad guy in Time Bandits, but in primary colors.

Am I the only one who has a problem with the song "Smooth Criminal"? First I always thought it was Eddie not Annie but the female character name makes it worse. Its not a smooth criminal, basically its home invasion with murder. What a crappy topic. I still love the music though...

"Smooth Criminal"

As He Came Into The Window
It Was The Sound Of A
Crescendo
He Came Into Her Apartment
He Left The Bloodstains On
The Carpet
She Ran Underneath The Table
He Could See She Was Unable
So She Ran Into The Bedroom
She Was Struck Down, It Was
Her Doom

Annie Are You Ok
So, Annie Are You Ok
Are You Ok, Annie
Annie Are You Ok
So, Annie Are You Ok
Are You Ok, Annie
Annie Are You Ok
So, Annie Are You Ok
Are You Ok, Annie
Annie Are You Ok
So, Annie Are You Ok, Are You Ok, Annie

So They Came Into The
Outway
It Was Sunday-What A Black
Day
Mouth To Mouth Resus-
Citation
Sounding Heartbeats-
Intimidations

the best song from them is the last song on the Anthology called "Universe" it's damn solid.

For what it's worth, "Annie are you OK" comes from what they used to teach people to say to the doll used in CPR training, Resuscitation Annie.

Digitalstrange 2008-02-18 03:41:18 PM
AAF is allright. certainly not worth the vitriol some of you are spewing, but Id also laugh at anyone calling them a great band.

I cant remember what other fluff alt band did the remake of Boys of Summer but that was a good cover. Liked the replacement of Deadhead with Black flag for the dissonanance line.

also will send some love out to those mentioning Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, they are a fun band.
