Booo to Subby. Headline is misleading. I thought this was someone who walked out of the crowd and saved the show.

The guy is bass baritone with the ENO.

I still think it's hilarious that the "star" of the show stayed on stage and lip synced though.

Hence "Is there an opera singer in the house?" rather than "Is there someone who is not-an-opera-singer-but-fancies-a-go-at-singing-some-opera in the house."

/ Not subby.

This sort of thing happens more often than one might think. In major opera houses, each lead singer has a designated backup, ready to step in at a moment's notice.

I wonder what happened in this case.

Doesn't beat Aretha Franklin stepping in at the last moment to sing Nessun Dorma at the Grammys when Pavarotti got sick.

Why is this hilarious to you? You think this guy who has nothing to do with this production could get up on stage and automatically know all the staging that the director put in place?

Its one thing to know the music which doesn't change all that much. Just watch the conductor and you should be fine

But the staging? He would have looked like a total baffoon.

GCD: Booo to Subby. Headline is misleading. I thought this was someone who walked out of the crowd and saved the show.

That's exactly what happened. The singer that stepped in was attending as an audience member.

I still think it's hilarious that the "star" of the show stayed on stage and lip synced though.

This is a pretty common practice in situations like this. There are times where a singer can step in and ad lib the staging, but that isn't always the case. I thought it was odd that the article said he sang from back stage. This is usually done from the pit.

He probably didn't have an understudy for this role. Male leads are much less likely to have an understudy than female leads in a professional opera company. One just doesn't get sick...

I don't know why this reminds me of when the lead singer of Metallica hurt his arm years ago and had to perform without playing the guitar. Apparently the guitar was his "macho" prop because he looked like a prissy frontman without it.

Not exactly the understudy. He was supposed to perform the role a month later, so he was learning the music, but he was there for opening night with his wife. No warm up. No prep.

If you think that you can just walk up and sing an opera cold, you don't sing much.
