I was really excited when I first heard about American Idol. I thought we were going to get a chance to see some great undiscovered singing and songwriting talent. Then I watched it and it was a fancied up karaoke contest. Whoop de do.

When the label spends $2.5 million and you sell 400 copies, I think you're still technically an unknown amateur.

It's like when you can't get laid for awhile and get retroactive virginity.

Does anyone really care about this? Or is this just some manufactured outrage that Fox is putting about to generate controversy and score some ratings?

This is the first season, other than the first, that I've actually paid attention to the show. (I live in a foreign country, and I need US culture on occasion, even if it is the worst kind.)

So anyway...

I was rooting for the homeless kid. He actually had a little bit of that "starving artist" thing going for him.

He was much better than the Rock-N-Roll nurse, or the other "rockers" that they decided to keep. And, all the Mariah Carey wannabes can DIAF for all I'm concerned.

They're loading the deck: whatsher face's album bombed big time and got beat by a Christmas album. If that happens once or twice more the validity of the show will crumble and no one will care (or watch).

The whole sell is that you're hand picking the next pop-star, and if the person people pick flounders everyone loses. So this season they're going to stack the deck with talent that has already been 'discovered' but whom needs the kind of exposure and publicity the show provides.

Who cares?

AiryAnne 2008-02-18 09:30:52 AM
How is the show any different than the way other pop stars are chosen? Answer: It's televised and has more judges.

Backstreet Boys, NSync, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, etc. They sing other peoples songs and have a great marketing department. Just like American Idol.

luckybastard 2008-02-18 09:34:42 AM
The good ones have good voices and are fairly attractive. That's how I can sit through parts of the show. I don't expect anything more than that.

/would never buy an album of theirs, though.

Sounds like the perfect definition of "pop music".

yes. American Idol isn't pretending it's anything other than that.

I thought rock nurse had a good voice, even if it will get old too soon o the show.

Then there is that Kristy Lee Cook or what ever her name is girl. Who had a career and was going to get Britney Spears on her album. Guess the singing in front of a confederate flag sort of ruined it.

No it doesn't. It tells you who to vote for every week after the show. You just go to the website and start dialing the number they list.

lelio 2008-02-18 12:04:02 PM
Despite solid reviews and more than $2.2 million spent by MCA producing and marketing the album, the CD sold fewer than 400 copies in its first three months of release, according to the Journal.

How on earth do you only sell 400 copies in 3 months? For 100 stores that's 1 copy sold every 3 weeks. I could probably break that with a yodeling album.

Di Atribe [TotalFark] 2008-02-18 12:27:53 PM
mofomisfit: You just go to the website and start dialing the number they list.

You are still voting. You understand that they take those votes and show them to their advertisers... "Look, we got 30 million votes last week!" You are still contributing to the show staying on the air. IlGreven had it right.

Also, as an AI viewer all seven seasons... I just wanted to say that I so very rarely care about what any of the winners do. I just want to watch the show for 4 months, get sick of it, then go back and watch it 8 months later.

'drunk Protestant Guinness-sucking fukkers' sounds pretty attractive to me!

I also liked homeless boy's performance. I nicknamed him Wound. There was an element of rawness unique for the show, and (for some reason I can't define) more credible than much of the emo my kid listens to. Didn't really enjoy hearing him outside of a preformance though. I honestly think they skipped him because if he became a celebrity, he'd be a huge trainwreck.

Boy has obviously made some bad decisions to get to the living out of your car point. I lived out of my car for a few months, showered at work, did what I had to do to get a roof. But no matter how many bad breaks I went through at that point, I also identified the dumb ass stunts I was responsible for, and stopped repeating most of them.

shabu: I honestly think they skipped him because if he became a celebrity, he'd be a huge trainwreck.

I think that was part of it. I also think he didn't really stand a chance because we'd all tire of his shenanigans real quick. Talented kid, though. I hope he finds an audience.

Farkomatic 2008-02-18 12:48:20 PM
Since fark is the home of "Meg White is a better drummer than Neil Peart", I don't feel bad at all for being a huge fan of Idol. Carrie Underwood and Chris Daughtry are as good as anybody out there and making as much money as anybody out there no matter how much you hate them.

Idol raised the bar this year to allow in better singers (diamonds not as rough), so it will be tougher while being more likely to produce another pop star.

unfarkingbelievable 2008-02-18 01:25:55 PM
Apparently the only song Kristy Lee Cook can sing is Amazing Grace. She sang it exactly teh same as her initial audition. Boring! She won't last because she can't sing that song every episode!

Amanda Overmyer is totally refreshing -- it's so great to hear a true female rock-blues voice again. If I were a record company exec I'd just sign her right now.

barefoot in the head [TotalFark] 2008-02-18 02:04:20 PM
Not news, and dumb. The rule is "current contract". And Kelly Clarkson is a very good validation of Idol. Talent being what it is, hers is rare.

Yeah, hurry up and get your speed dialers in order!! Because lord knows, since you have such a pathetic, lame, miserable life in your parents' musty, stank basement, no on else should be allowed to enjoy ANYTHING without you trying to f()ck it up.

Bitter, angry haters. You know, it IS an election year - your shenanigans and skilled vitriol would transfer over to THAT contest really, really well. Give it some thought.

This show is the most reprehensible thing ever on a television set. The way that all reality shows work is shameful but this show is their unholy master. That's right. I said it.

Yeah, you're totally the first person to say it. So what makes Idol more reprehensible than, say... Big Brother?

American Idol is rigged! Not only are there ringers who are not amateur talents, but everyone's votes are counted on Diebold hardware!

Britain has a lot more talent.

American Idol is a terrible show. Really, it's terrible. The only talent Simon has ever been introduced to, and the only time in his life Simon ever got anything right (as skeptical as he looked before the performance) was Paul Potts.
