I wish I could buy the original artwork for the Mothers of Invention's "Weasels Ripped My Flesh."

If memory serves, they got that for something like a dime in a thrift shop.

Just means the cover is more interesting than what's on the inside. Saw them open up for Pearl Jam a few years ago. Worst suckage EVAR.

The only cover art that matters.

what, no "Sonic Youth sucks when they opened for Pearl Jam!" posts yet? I am amazed. Maybe because they're referring to their best album?

They did not. The artist Mike Kelly did though. Kelly's got some awesome stuff out there if you like the whole Frankensteined stuffed animal thing. Which I do.

Artwork, subby? Most of the young'uns have moved on to formats utterly without it, microscopic or otherwise. Sad, really.

That said, wake me up when they auction off Lung Leg. I bet she's a real wildcat in the sack, even if she's about 50 now.

And anyone capping on Sonic Youth, particularly Daydream Nation, needs a good cock-slappin'. Especially if they're the type to go to (snicker) Pearl Jam concerts.

This.

Saw the Daydream Nation tour back in the day. A million tons of gasm.

'Thurston. Did you find your shiat?'

YonderScott 2008-02-18 12:21:49 PM
I bought Daydream Nation on vinyl when it came out. If memory serves me right, it had a poster in it as well. I still have the poster that came in Dark Side of the Moon, and the sticker that came in Grateful Dead - Grateful Dead. Off my lawn.

Daydream Nation is the greatest album of all time, period.

Exclamation point, actually.

said it better than I could.

That said, I find 90s Sonic Youth pretty damn boring, so I can understand not liking them during the years they opened for PJ. But no one can talk shiat about Daydream Nation without looking like a complete farktard.

There's some truth to that; I think the vocabulary that they had honed and perfected over the years got kinda codified by the time Washing Machine rolled around (exception being the amazing "Diamond Sea"). It's pretty understandable; when you create such a singular sound it's hard to break free of that.

Will never forgive the Neil Young fans who booed them during their opening slot in the Daydream Nation era. And then cheered Social Distortion, fer Chrisakes. And then roared for Neil when he came out and pretty much aped SY's sound.

neil young aped SY's sound?
ummm garage rock history lesson please
thank you

anyway, what the hell is a photo painting?
did the fuhker actually paint anything or what?

/never bought an album past Goo
//will check out daydream nation now though

Diamond Sea is easily the best of their 90s stuff.

Their last few albums have been pretty good, too. Nothing as great as EVOL, Sister, or Daydream Nation, but still fun to listen to.

Guzzelwump 2008-02-18 06:14:25 PM
Heh, I always assumed that was a photo rather than a painting. Before I clicked the link I assumed this was going to be about Raymond Pettibon's painting for Goo.

And foil helmet guy: Agreed. Awesome pic. Did you know the photographer tripped over just as she took it? A split second later and she would have taken a photo of the floor.

yagoingorno 2008-02-18 08:27:04 PM
Daydream Nation and Sister are by far their two greatest albums.

I'm pretty sure Pettibon had a major show at the Whitney a couple years back, not too bad for a punk rock cartoonist.

Still have the poster from the LP along with a bunch of old Pettibone flyers and stickers he did for Black Flag when Black Flag was still good (pre Henry)

Actually, it was Neil and the reunited Crazy Horse and, most def, Neil was channeling some serious SY guitar inspiration.

Most definitely, go back and pick up Daydream Nation (which, if memory serves, is the one right before Goo. Then, keep working back. There are some definite treasures there, though Daydream Nation probably finds them at the very top of their form.

Eh, Id get excited if they were auctioning paintings of Raymond Pettibon album covers. I wouldn't mind having "Goo" and "Family
Man" framed on my wall.

I love Sonic Youth. There are about four spectacular songs on each of their albums.
