kosovoians were going crazy in times square (NYC) this afternoon.
they were beeping horns and waving flags.
soon they will beat Scotland for the world cup qualifying.

This is a can of worms that we may regret opening.

This is no small shiat, backing Kosovo's independence. Russia has a major beef with that, and this whole situation is one major clash from getting pretty damn ugly.

FTA: "We'll see what happens during the night," said one Serb man. "There will be a lot of armed people here." He pulled a hand grenade from his pocket.

Wish I was there. These people are gonna have a blast!

Get prepared for either a Mogadishu or Iran Embassy takeover repeat.

Both episodes were painful, agonizing periods of my life I'm not anxious to rerun...Iran for 444 days of yellow ribbons and wondering why we were so hamstrung by diplomacy; Mogadishu for 36 hours swept under the carpet of covert ops and ignoring what should have been a key moment in American military history.

Jesus Christ, let's do something quick.

It would not surprise me one bit if Serbia - in all its incarnations - is at the top of the list of troublesome nations. If you do it on a basis of size, they have no competition.

zealot_45 2008-02-17 09:27:06 PM
The funny thing about all of this is that it is being almost completely ignored by the American media...I mean, we do have more important things like Britney's hooha, but its kinda interesting. I think when the whole house of cards finally comes down, we are going to be so blindsided its not funny. Even if its not today, what goes up must come down. So...I quote Braveheart..."Me, oh no, I'll be fine...but you, you're farked."

Well, the Albanians are about the only people left in the world that have undying love for America, if Bush's visit to Tirana is any clue.

Too late! He preemptively sent them back in 1999. Damn he is smooth.

Bondith 2008-02-17 09:32:02 PM
The Serbs have been watching their little empire get whittled away since Slovenia declared independence in the early 90s. You'd think they'd be used to it by now.

Maybe if they weren't such major-league assholes, more of their neighbours would want to share a country with them.

Ah, hell, as long as I'm tarring with a wide brush...everyone in the Balkans is a major league asshole. Sometimes it seems they're just not happy unless they're ethnically cleansing the neighbours.

"we"?

Boy the US can't catch a break. We bomb a Muslim country and someone burns our embassies. We support the independence of a Muslim majority country and someone burns our embassies.

We should just say "f*uck everyone", declare ourself neutral and just stay in our hemisphere. Because no matter what we do, we piss-off someone.

Like what? Putin is gonna have a field day with this. He's already been cocky with us lately. I wonder if they've scrambled bombers yet just to toy with people.

Bush could send Madalene Albright in to clean up the mess! She did such a wonderful job the last time she stuck her nose in the butt crack of Europe.

pngwnpwr: This shiat will get out of control. It will get out of control and we'll be lucky to live through it.

Basically. You're looking at an area already under protection by NATO forces, who just seceded from the country that signed a deal with Russia for its energy resources. This has little to do, I suspect, with Albanian independence and more to do with getting under Russia's skin by giving them a "distraction" that they will have to deal with to keep oil in that region flowing to Gazprom.

Given the recent claim that Russia is willing to use nuclear weapons on Ukraine if it joins NATO, this little bit of brinksmanship is a "put up or shut up" move on the part of Western interests in the region. It'll be interesting to see how this unfolds - or escalates, for that matter.

One gets the feeling that there's a timetable on which the clock is ticking, and that the West is somehow behind schedule, no?

Not wanting to turn that ugly head, but if "she" gets in office, she gets to clean up her husband's mess on this one. I think I just threw my back out on the irony.

"It would not surprise me one bit if Serbia - in all its incarnations - is at the top of the list of troublesome nations."

The Balkans have always produced more history than they can consume locally.

(quote is from Churchill, I think, not 100% sure)
