Another reason Iceland refuses to join the EU...

Reykjavik 2008 (new window)

Iceland funds almost 100% of their coast guard and mountain rescue squads through private purchase of fireworks. The average family spends upward of $1000 for New Year's and blows up stuff from 10pm till 4am.

zz9 2008-02-17 03:20:13 PM
Okay, I actually read and like the Daily Mail, and hate the EU, but even I think this article is complete scaremongering. When you actually read the article it says they are going to re test all fireworks and "suggest" standing 26 feet away rather than 16 feet. Nowhere does it say they are going to ban fireworks or large displays, in fact merely the fact that they are going to test all new fireworks proves they are still going to be allowed.
And I've always ignored the "stand 16 feet away" instructions, how are they going to enforce the new instructions in private gardens?

Daily Mail runs unfounded 'Brussels Bureaucracy gone mad' story. Quelle surprise. I'm just amazed they missed the whole 'evil, welfare cheating immigrants killed Princess Di and drove up mortgage rates' angle.

Nope, not gonna happen. Germany likes its nearly harmless explosives too much.

Why God why?! I'm glad I'm not in an EU country. I love me some explosive things.

Try Canadian fireworks..LAME CRAP. Most are American duds sent across the border to get back the cash invested.

/M-80's please.

That's still too close. I'd suggest at least a few thousand feet away. You know, for the children.

Believe it or not...

Paris has fireworks once a year and it's not New Year's Eve.

Only on Bastille Day. Go figure.

Hey England, you gonna stand for this crap?! Some ass-clown in Brussels doesn't like something, so you guys in Great Britain are required to comply? I don't care if it is as simple as "re-testing". The point is, some idiot in Brussels is calling the shots.

libbyshome 2008-02-17 04:15:00 PM
My city has banned fireworks. The quietest Halloween ever last Oct.
No fireworks related injuries. No barking dogs. No annoying screamers. City permit displays still allowed.

I don't believe the UK signed the constitution.

Perhaps it makes sense.... they are always passing laws that reflect their moral superiority to America.

The United States?

At least for now, you can get much better fireworks here in Germany than you can in Georgia (the US state, not the country).

Never mind that fireworks are illegal in many states in the USA, we'll just keep making fun of Europe...

*cough* Bullshiat! *cough*

This will never happen, just as other Daily Mail EU-bashing stories about demainding straight bananas, banning sausages, etc., were all bollocks too.

It amazes me that anyone even pretends to believe this stuff anymore

Since most of this crap is caused by private enterprise and capitalism, I'm on your side. Insurance companies are awful, selling risk and safety has got out of control. The state rarely has anything to do with it. The bubble wrap business is doing well, though.

Glass Joe 2008-02-17 04:27:54 PM

Where I live has banned fireworks too. Fortunately, I can drive accross another state's border and get the fireworks I want. Then I set them off. The anti-fireworks laws are a joke. Half the people in my town set off fireworks, good ones too.

/last 4th of July set off $600 worth of fireworks.
//2 state cops and a sheriff's deputy parked in front of my house to watch.
///stupid laws don't get enforced.

I don't know where you are but in NS we get mostly chinese made fireworks, of course my home town is getting to be more and more like a chinese village so that could have something to do with it.

// Seriously learning trying to learn chinese to be able to communicate in my own hometown.
// Also don't mind a bit, the town sucked anyway maybe it will end of better.

hyperspacemonkey: Insurance companies are awful, selling risk and safety has got out of control.

Yes, insurance is a terrible product. Where else can the average person join a pool of others to reduce their premiumn to protect themselves from a negative event?

Only the uber rich can afford NOT to have it.

Y'all should come over to 'merica. You may not have the right to bear fireworks in every state, but you do have the right to bear firearms!!

Subby: [Asinine] EU set to ban all fireworks as Nanny State goes internationa
===============

You do realize that about 40 of the 50 states (probably even more) have fireworks completely banned too, right?

/Yeah, I hate it too.
//Darwin should have a chance to win!

maut101 2008-02-17 04:59:47 PM
What is worse is that model rockets are classed as fireworks in a lot of EU members. This could put a stop to model rocketry for some time if passed - possibly make an end to it...

kilgorn 2008-02-17 05:01:49 PM
Fireworks are illegal in Georgia but not in
South Carolina. So, twice a year, we make the pilgrimage.

For some reason, huge fireworks stands are right there
on the border.

/likes me some buzz bombs

Yup. Come here over the new year. You can buy as much fireworks as you can carry, and shoot them up yourself... It's like civil war, without the dead bodies everywhere...

Oh FFS. Who actually pays attention to the Daily Mail. It's s shiat senstaionlist paper and as rabid anti-EU as it comes in the UK. Ignore it. About as much news as the Sun.

I was there two new years eves ago, and got some real sissy fireworks.

They're banned in my county too. July 4th still sounds like a war zone.

Probably helps that I'm located within a mile of an indian reservation that apparently survives of gambling and fireworks sales.

I would, but I just read that the EU has banned it. Or made it compulsory. One or the other. I didn't bother reading the details before writing a furious letter to my MP.

Nanny State is a shiatty phrase.
I agree. It's a euphemism for our creeping politically correct socialist dictatorship. How about "neo-communism" ?

darth_shatner 2008-02-17 05:11:31 PM
Rememeber kids - your local chinatown was, and still is, your best source of illegal fireworks.

I'm not just takling form no experience here. My father was career Army, and I was in the Marine Corps. I also have to deal with the VA because of my back. I spent pretty much all of my life in the closest thing the US has to socialized medicine. Sorry if I'm not a fan. My wife is active Army, but my job provides me with a decent health plan, and I use that instead of Tricare. I like it quite a bit better.

So, if you are from some other country, sing all the praises you want, maybe it works for you. I just have a feeling that if the US tries it, it would fark it up just like dependant care or VA care. Anyone who thinks the system won't be just as farked up and overwhelmed as the military system is either stupid or naive.

drucee 2008-02-17 05:24:02 PM
Come on, Fark, just ban the phrase "Nanny State."

PLEASE.......
