I'm going to find out which circuit breaker the damned thing is on, and take out the batteries.

Last time we lost phone service because it was being switched to a different carrier, the damned alarm went into full panic mode. And there is no off switch.

"The best thing a customer can do is contact the alarm company; they're going to give you the best answer. They have the latest information; they'll come out and do the proper assessment, and give you the best information possible," said Richard Chace, CEO, Security Industry Association.

The information is free. The upgrade to your system however, is not.

There are 10 possible outcomes to this, either they switch to digital, or they don't.

It's not unlike all the money people invested in their TVs before HDTV came out. in 1 year all analog cable will be gone. Technology changes and old methods are phased out. However, it seems the phone companies could have provided more advance warning.

So my analog system of a shotgun pointed at the door with the trigger wired thru a pulley to the doorknob will stop working?

I have an analog cell backup so I received a letter from the alarm company about a month ago warning about the shutdown. They want $200 to upgrade the transmitter. It's a backup in case thieves cut our phone line, and it's an additional yearly fee over and above the landline monitor system. I'm holding off for now. When my cell monitoring renewal comes up I'll see if they work a deal to give me a transmitter for free if I sign up for monitoring.

Citation please, I'm aware of the end of analog over the air transmission, but the cable I've not heard mention of.

betasp 2008-02-17 04:42:47 PM
Monitored security systems are crap. You are usually paying for a couple of window and door sensors and a couple of motion detectors. Really look at your system, are all your windows and doors protected? 99% of the time, the answer is NO.

Dump the monitoring once your contract is up and do some reading up on wiring the thing yourself. For 1/3 what the security company wanted to charge, I have all my door and windows protected with an addition 2 motion detectors. I pay only $10/mo. for third party monitoring and have have NO contract. Since I completed the project 2 years ago, I have saved over $1k over the security company quote.

That doesn't make any sense - if your analog system didn't come with a annual fee, neither should the digital - its still free to call 911 on digital cell phone systems. Unless the system is being upgraded to call their dispatch center instead of 911 then it should still be free.

What do national companies like ADT charge for monitoring? I have an independent company doing our monitoring and they charge $15 per month.

Hard to say, we have a house in the country, and due to problems with people breaking in and stealing things, we keep nothing of value there. It is a pain that people cut the phone lines before breaking in, as there is no alarm. If thievs think you have an analog backup, they may feel easier about cutting your phone lines.

Systems in NY are not allowed to call the police directly. They are required to go through a call center. Even fire alarm systems call the center first and they call the authorities. For fire calls, they immediately call 911. For police/burglary calls the monitor center calls the home/business first and you provide a passcode. If you trigger the silent alarm then they call the police immediately without a call to the home/business.

So long story short, the monitor companies have you by the short hairs.

So were the alarm companies "renting" the airwaves? Ah well, either way, you're right about upgrading. Just the word Analog makes my head shake. I wonder that the alarm system companies are gonna do now?

That's funny, back when I was 16 I was one of those people hanging crap from doors, and I'd snag the occasional one of those signs.

ekdikeo4 2008-02-17 05:29:04 PM
Oh, the effects of this will be practically nil - nearly all alarm systems connect through the regular phone system. The vast majority of ones that had cellular capabilities built-in have been upgraded to some modern technology, and iwll continue working. Very few of the analog cell alarms are in service, and the ones that are, are prboably in areas where there will still be analog service. Headline is almost toatlly inacurae.

Maddogjew [TotalFark] 2008-02-17 05:36:40 PM
Hey, ADT users, your Duress code is 2580. If a burglar had the foresight to cut your phone line first (little gray box outside your house) and uses that code, than he has a free ride. I used to install for ADT and less than 2% had cell back ups. Alarm systems are a scam, only good to keep out kids and idiots, not a professional thief.

You're thinking of the analog over the air signal. Nothing else will be affected, including most TVs receiving over the air channels made in the last few years, and all TVs hooked up to any kind of satellite or cable service.

benh159: Wow thats total bullshiat, so what about all the money that a family invested in?? lol chopped liver??

It is bullshiat. Most security systems don't use analog wireless service. They use analog POTS (wired) service.

FTA: "they're going to give you the best answer. ... and give you the best information possible,"

Like the information that the wireless link is only for backup of the primary wired link?

netringer 2008-02-17 06:05:00 PM
fanbladesaresharp: I wonder how this will affect all those "lifeline" gizmos grandmothers use when they're having a stroke?

Not at all. They use the POTS line to dial for help.
