Although thousands of protesters are expected in downtown St. Paul for the Republican National Convention in early September, Walsh said the proposed purchase "is in no way related. It simply isn't."

wait - are they gonna taser the protesters or the Republicans?

BobtheFascist 2008-02-17 04:27:48 PM
I'm sure they'll get plenty of use at the RNC. I mean, jeezuz. Holding the RNC in a blue state? Long term, they'll get plenty of use in Frogtown, the East Side, Selby/Dale, Rice St, etc...

I work in downtown St. Paul, so I'm really hoping they won't taze me, bro'

Well, I guess I now have something to look forward to when I protest.

I wondered this also. I'm not sure whether to be for or against this course of action.

The $210,000 purchase would be financed with money from drug seizures.

So the money they made depriving people of their right to ingest whatever the hell they want will be used to buy equipment that will likely help deprive people of their right to protest and free speech. La-and of the freeee!

Let's hope they're using them during sweeps of M/SP Airport restrooms prior to and during the convention.

i think we are dew an explanation about this. i'm worried about what the police might due with those tazers. especially if they taze someone moist with the morning do... it might shock them worse than expected!

There just might be a bunch of Ron Paul Republicans at the RNC. So the answer is both.

Enemabag Jones 2008-02-17 05:56:31 PM
The RNC seems to be acting like douches when they choose a city to use. For example; 2000-san diego, 2004-nyc and 2008 minn/st paul. All cities with very liberal reputations.

Is there a rovian strategy to to attempt to get as many non-white males in the audience?

/No city in the US should be closed to anyone, just there might be a whole bunch fewer problems with protesters in dallas, alanta or miami.

Neeek [TotalFark] 2008-02-17 06:04:30 PM
I dunno why they'd deny that it's for the convention. It's not like expecting a sudden increase in drunken brawls is a bad reason to have extra tasers on hand.

No, throwing bricks through windows and trying to charge into and disrupt others' participation in the political process, then screaming "HELP! FASCISM AND OPPRESSION!! POLICE BRUTALITY!!" when your ass gets slammed... is not "participating in the political process", it's grounds for a tazerin'.

If you stand in your little Kumbaya circle, blocking traffic, waving your little wastes of paper in the air with hyperbolic comparisons and screaming at passers by, that's perfectly fine.

Tazers? Tazers are ineffective at crowd control, unless they are buying the new automatic shotgun tazer (Video) Nice to see that someone has also mounted that on an unmanned drone.

Congregating in a non free-speech zone citizen? I think not, try our sonic weaponry, stun grenades, or invisible tear gas.

In NYC they took all the protesters to a asbestos filled, condemmed garage modified to a prison camp for 3 days. I wonder where they will put them in St. Paul?

Who said anything about tossing bricks? I was at the RNC and saw whole blocks of people rounded up with snow fences and then shipped out, none of them were rioting. Then when the police horses started to put the squeeze on them, some people ducked under or around the horses and were pepper sprayed in the face. I saw an old lady catch a cops elbow straight to the nose, and then the cop yelled at her for being in his way.

SemperLieSuckah: Since I already fed the troll I may as well play with him. I suppose in your mind the police never try to stir up violence so that the rest of their buddies have a reason to engage the crowd. No such thing as an undercover cop posing as an anarchist tossing bricks to get the crowd riled up I suppose? Never happens right?

I dunno, but the burden of proof is on you.

Since we're in Imaginationland coming up with conspiracy theories: No such thing as an anarchist with an insidious plot to go around poking cops with needles full of AIDS, never happens right? Since i thought it up, it must be plausible. And since it's plausible, we must assume it is so. KILL ALL PROTESTING ANARCHISTS...

It wouldn't be the first time a protesting jackass makes up a story to frame police, never happens right?

NYC was due to 9/11 and (helping the economy after). Police did a great job. Atlanta? Miami? less liberal? no way. Most major cities wil lbe liberal and they tend to have facilities to acomodate visitors so that is why they tend to be in cities as mentioned before. Also, I think it is a generic bid process in which the cities participate.

I would think the RNC hurt the citiy's economy. It also hurt the city's spirit a little to see the RNC using us like that. I think Kerry beat bush like 90% - 10% in NYC. I would agree that yes, the police got a huge amount of money to handle the crowd, but half of the city was shut down just from traffic, let alone the areas affected by the crowds. No, the RNC was there to capitalize on 9/11, not to "help the city recover". How does making the center of your city a military zone with restricted access to citizens help it recover from a terrorist attack?

She was protesting the RNC using 9/11 for their own gain. She had no intentions of "mingling with police" and I didn't say the cop tried to elbow her, I was just pointing out that while protestors were being corralled, lots of people were trying to rush past them to not get snagged, and she caught a random elbow. Just pointing out how the police take calm situations and make them frantic for their own purposes. Have a calm protest you want to marginalize to make look like radicals? Provoke them to violence, air it on tv, then you can call them "left wing radicals" instead of "peaceful protestors"

Actually, St. Paul cops have been asking for these for quite some time now, for the exact reason in the article - so that every cop (or at least every car) has one.

Glad I wasn't the only one to notice that. If you look around there is another video of one of those mounted on a rc helicopter raining hell. Tazer has a contract out now to get a crazy starwars drone looking model out on the streets next year as well.

Just what we need, unmanned aerial drones shooting electronic weapons at us. I'm sure a flying automatic shotgun will be very precise with its targets.

SemperLieSuckah- Just gonna go ahead and say pwn3d now.

The_OcO:

Cops go undercover ALL THE TIME to try to keep a finger on the pulse of the crowd. THIS IS COMMON. They were just acting like the protesters in that situation, there is nothing to indicate that this particular incident is special. They were just doing what anti-globalization/anarchist protesters do: taunt cops.

So no, not pwned.

P.S.: the "9/11 was a hoax!" billboard on the front of the video makes my eyes roll right away...
