I am waiting for the historian rankings. Most people on the street don't know dick about the contributions of John Adams, Woodrow Wilson, or Eisenhower. Historical rankings of US Presidents (new window)

But it is much too early to be determining just how bad (or good) Dubya's presidency is.

WorldCitizen [TotalFark] 2008-02-17 11:46:26 AM
The average American would probably be hard pressed to name ten presidents, so these things really don't do much other than prove how much people don't know.

WorldCitizen [TotalFark] 2008-02-17 11:48:18 AM
Oh, God, and Reagan above Washington? Christ.

That's what I'm guessing. All the Presidents listed are either the most recent or the most obvious. How else could anyone include a President who managed to get himself impeached? If you had a poll of the top ten worst, many of these would be on that list also just due to sheer inability to come up with more than ten names.

/ W is the worst President in at least my lifetime
//yes, that includes Nixon

Well with Regan #2 that pretty much proves your point.

That list is nothing but fail.

Bush ought to be on the other end. We haven't really had much of a president since Kennedy. Clinton was the best since then, and that's saying something.

Well Lincoln makes sense.

Especially since the republican party was the liberal party back then.

It didn't become the con party until the 1880s when it was "bought" by the railroad robber barons.

From the online poll in TFA:

Where does George W. Bush rank among all U.S. presidents?
Among the bottom third 63%
Among the top third 24%
Among the middle third 13%
Total Votes: 201,047

While its true that most Americans know nothing about presidents, it's also true that the bulk of professional (read: academic) historians are quite liberal. It's no surprise that the people who expanded their own power and that of the state are always at the top of their list. At least with the populace its basically just a popularity contest and not an argument for statism.

This... Carter was not a bad President. He was hamstrung by his own Democratic Congress, an Arab controlled OPEC flexing its economic muscles, and a pair of grossly incompetent Fed Chairmen who seemed hellbent on scoring the highest inflation rate in history.

Whether you're a democrat or a republican this list just doesn't work. Who honestly believes that Bush Jr. was better then Bush Senior? If they rated all the presidents I think everyone would agree that Bush senior should be ranked better then Bush jr.

Agreed.

I'd like to know how a president whose biggest accomplishments (in no particular order) include smoking weed in the White House and banging Marilyn Monroe becomes one of the greatest presidents in history.

We haven't really had much of a president since Kennedy. Clinton was the best since then, and that's saying something.

LOL. Yeah, right. Kennedy's main accomplishments were a) almost causing WWIII with the Bay of Pigs, b) banging Marilyn Monroe, and c) getting shot in the head. I'll never understand the left's fascination with that whole family of losers.

For that matter, Lincoln gets a lot of credit for freeing the slaves, but that was a case of doing the right thing for the wrong reason.

Reagan, OTOH, now there was a president. "Today I've signed into legislation that will outlaw the Evil Empire forever...... We commence bombing in 5 minutes." Classic!

safeasmilk 2008-02-17 01:04:42 PM
Wow, sort of interesting to see that our least qualified president in history became the best ranked president in history. Better yet, he came from the same state that Obama is currently serving as Senator.

/gObama!

Lincoln?

The guy whos very election broke the country in half?

Wow revisionist history really is fun.

Sorry its Washinton all the way. Revolutionized warfare to make the farking country in the first place. Reluctantly took comand of the country and after 2 terms stepped aside because he thought the country needed to learn to get along without him.

The man really put his country first, not a party or his legacy or his ambition.

Thats greatness

So:
Kennedy = bad because he almost caused a war.
Reagan = good because he almost caused a war.

Standard conservative doublethink and hypocrisy. Nothing surprising.

Wolf Flywheel 2008-02-17 01:15:02 PM
Reagan brought about the beginning of the end of communism and ended the cold war. He didn't sell arms to the contras. That was a CIA action approved and mainly headed up by Bush Sr. who was a former CIA man. Reagan "could not recall" because he had no idea. Kennedy was only mediocre. That's being generous. Carter did not "create" jobs. He didn't hire or fire anybody. The economy at the time of his presidency was caustic in the creation or loss of jobs. Carter had a lot to do with bringing down what good had been done. That's why his arse was ejected after 4 years. Similar to Bush Sr.... Lincoln was an excellent President and often underestimated.

Clinton was merely mediocre and any good he did will always be tainted by his man-whoring. Let's not wet up Washington's cack too hard either. He was a reluctant Pres. and his was a reward for his earlier acheivements. He was never greatly "keen" on doing it. Still better than most, I guess. Teddy R. was great as well as most of the rest of that list.

/Just my opinion.
