simulate everything from colliding black holes to the effects of drugs.

But can they develop new software titles worth buying for the PS3?

UNC_Samurai: But can they develop new software titles worth buying for the PS3?

I hope so. I bought one yesterday to sit next to my 360 after Blu-ray won the war this week. I like it so far.

Prof Gaurav Khanna at the University of Massachusetts has used an array of 16 PS3s to calculate what will happen when two black holes merge.

This is why it's hard to find them cheap on ebay. The scientists are sucking them up to play with.

Black Hole Pool would be pretty nifty, though.

I have a PS3 on extended loan (former roomie could pay his bills so its like a security deposit)

Seeing the two game systems I am VERY unimpressed with everything made for the ps3 (except for Resistance Fall of man)

Game console flame war!

Doesn't the PS3 have every title the 360 has except Halo and Gears of War, which are overrated anyway? Plus Blu Ray won the format war, not that I give a rat's ass.

To anyone about to biatch about how we don't need Blu-ray for game consoles: Lost Odyssey. Four DVDs.

And so it begins.

/To any intelligent people out there, Heavenly Sword, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Resistance, Warhawk and Floklore are all great

First of all, XBox360 is WAY more than a gaming console. PS3 isn't really.

Secondly, I thought it was already declared that XBox was the overwhelming winner of the gaming consoles war? Why is there another PS[whatever] coming out??

I hope this isn't another Netscape vs IE war, where Netscape hung around for another 10 years in denial.

Surrender to it's Glory:

All other consoles to succeed it are inferior with the exception of the Dreamcast which just was bad timing on Sega's part. The Nintendo 64 will always have it's place in my house. I played a PS3 at Best Buy, and I didn't see anything that I hadn't seen with the PS2. Xbox 360 didn't appeal to me either when I played King Kong on it. Nintendo Wii, forget about it I won't even touch that system. I'll stick with my Nintendo 64.

More like the other way around. 360 has Dead Rising, Mass Effect, Blue Dragon, Eternal Sonata. The PS3's problem of late is that it can't seem to hold on to any of it's higher profile exclusives. GTA, Devil May Cry, possibly MGS, and vague rumors hint at Final Fantasy.

From TFA: He was inspired while browsing through his son's games console's technical specification "I noticed that the architecture looked a lot like high performance supercomputers I had seen before," he says. "That's when I thought about getting one for myself."

You know, this is proof that, if nothing else is available, men will read ANYTHING in the can.

In the long run PS3 will probably sell more than XBox360. The death of HD-DVD is a major advantage for Sony.

I love their racing games and COD4 looks amazing although I dont like the fact they stole rankings from the delta force series.

Im sure once their version of sim city comes out kids will never go outside again. Also them winning the blu ray war sealed the deal that this console will just keep growing and end up passing all the others, sorry wii fanatics.

So, the 360 has music, video, pictures, and voice chat. ...exactly like the PS3. Except the PS3 has a built in HD format drive (for the winning format) and there's talk of streaming/on demand gobbledygook. So...WTF are you trying to say?

Secondly, I thought it was already declared that XBox was the overwhelming winner of the gaming consoles war? Why is there another PS[whatever] coming out??

What? It came out first. The first Xbox sank, this one only sold because it came out before the wii/PS3. And FYI, the PS3 did as well as the 360 coming out...and the PS3 had competition, unlike the 360.

When Halo first came out, I didn't have an XBox, so had to wait for the PC version. I finally played it, and couldn't figure out the big deal. It more or less reminded me of any other PC shooter.

And Gears of War? Don't get me started about how they mapped the duck/sprint forward/climb over obstacles actions to the same key. Totally stupid. Plus, this badass soldier can't even jump!

The games I enjoyed so far on the 360 are Crackdown, Star Wars Lego, and Beautiful Katamari. Dead Rising (The Zombies in a mall game) I somewhat like, but had to but it down for a while because one section of the game they designed was real frustrating.

I can't wait for GTA4 and Spores to come out this year.

Considering a lot of consumers have just started getting into HD, I doubt a lot of them are going to make the change so rapidly into something that hardly noticeably better.

i dont really care to have a ps3 (i play pc games). But when i went to price blue ray players, the ps3 is cheaper than the damn blue ray player.

and what the hell is with the combo devices? a hd dvd player is like 150 bucks, and a blue ray player is 400. but a combo cost $750. wtf

My point was that the 360 wasn't full of multi-media functions the PS3 isn't...which it isn't. They're basically the same, except MS doesn't have a BD attachment yet, the HDD isn't standard (no one wants the cheap one) and can't play games on HD media.

Graphics don't matter that much to me; the differences I've noticed are very slight; usually one has better models, the other textures. I'd wait till people get used to making stuff for it. Compare a launch PS2 game to GoW2.

I hardcore agree with your points on Halo, and I hated Gears...the grenades/cover system were just moronic, and I felt no reason why it should be a third person game, really.

Do Want dead rising, but RE4 (Wii edition) quenched my thirst, and RE5 looks badass.

Speaking of Rockstar, not long ago at all, I would have said the same thing about the GTA series. I've not heard of them committing their next two games exclusively to PS3 (after GTA IV, I assume you mean), but I did just read an article stating that there would be two expansion packs for GTA IV that would be exclusive to XBOX 360.

I'm not knocking the PS3 in the least - with Blu-Ray winning, I might actually consider getting one in the near future, and I have no doubt that it has the potential to be an amazingly competitive machine. But for now, you can count it's exclusives on one hand, and so far, the future doesn't look good for expanding that list much more.

Yeah I have been wondering what the 360 is used for other than games, nobody I know even bought their ps3 for games, they bought it for the upgradeable blu ray player.

If you cant see how this is tremendously helpful to sony then you are obviously just a fanboy of another system.

Some do, the one we have still plays ps2 games, that is sonys biggest mistake IMO, they should have made all the units backwards compatible. As many units as the ps2 sold and is still selling, its farking crazy to let all those games sit there now.

Ker 2008-02-17 11:31:30 AM
Actually, I believe the 80 gig model was able to play PS2 games with backward compatibility, too, but through software rather than hardware. The 60 gig model simply has the Emotion engine hardware chip for doing it instead. Also, the PS3 does upscale PS2 games, which isn't really a PERFECT improvement in quality, but it does look nicer on your HDTV than it would on a PS2. As for the hard drive size, there's no reason to really get excited about that, as the HD in the PS3 is a standard laptop HD, and apparently can even be swapped for a higher size HD without voiding warranty.

@the poster who said the 360 is more than a gaming console, I would say the reverse. Right now, the 360 is the gamer's console, simply because right now, the 360 is the system that actually has good games to play. I have both consoles currently, and while I like both, and have played good games on both, until PS3 can pick up more games/sales, it serves primarily as my DVD/BD watching system. Calling the 360 more of the all-around system is really short-sighted. As far as I'm aware, it doesn't yet upscale standard DVDs (as the PS3 does to 1080P), it doesn't come with a high-definition drive out of the box (as the PS3 does, and in a format that won't be dead in a week), it will not be DivX certified (as the PS3 will be). PS3 even includes a web browser built onto it (which admittedly requires a decent keyboard to be terribly useful).

Personally I've got both systems (thanks largely to a sister who expected to be able to re-sell the PS3 she found in the early days at a profit, and failed), and when friends ask me which they should get, I tell them the 360 if they want to play games primarily, the PS3 if they want more functionality.

Oh yeah - and using the PS3 processor to produce sheer computing muscle isn't new. It's been helping with Folding@Home for some time, and providing, we'll call it "a decent level of power" for that program: Link (new window)

I have more exclusives that I can count on one hand in my drawer right now (well, that's six) and plenty more are comming...I don't see where people keep coming up with this argument.
I can think of enough exclusives for any current console to make me want to buy it, and I'd own them all if MS cut that XBL fee bull.

/It's more expensive than a PS3 assuming you keep it for 5~ years, if my math's right
