Given, the guy is a dumbass and needs to have his day in court. But, why is it okay for a cop to use his car to try and hit a running man?

Why ISN'T it? He got up and ran, so apparently getting run down by a police cruiser is better than getting tased.

casenickles 2008-02-17 09:51:16 AM
I think it's fine to run a guy over, especially since he doesn't mind risking everyone's life and if he can run faster than the cops he might end up risking more lives without a happy ending.

I was surprised that the guy was able to get up and keep running after that "love tap". Guess it wasn't as severe as it looked, cop either lucky or a farking good driver.

Dude, serious? He just endangered dozens of lives by driving the wrong way on that road. What's to say he won't run into a home and take someone hostage? He needed to be stopped immediately with whatever force was necessary. He should consider himself lucky they didn't shoot him dead. Running from the cops isn't a game.

I think the cop was in the process of trying to stop, and slid on the leaf littler and pine needles on the side of the road. Making it more of a shove than a full out hit. Which is why he didn't go UNDER the car.

Plus, what ichiban said. I'd shed no tears if they'd hit him and backed over him twice.

JustFarkinAround 2008-02-17 09:56:55 AM
Love-tap? fark that! I think cops should be able to shoot-to-kill the drivers in police chases. Wouldnt take but a few dead before everybody would be pullin over instead of running.

Even though I knew the 'love tap' was coming, I still let out a yelp of pain when he got hit.

I give the cops 6 out of 10 for the effort, and the running man a 9.4 out of 10 for getting up and continuing to run.

He only gets a 3 for his landing though...

I disagree. The immediate threat was over. The use of deadly force was no longer warranted. The guy was fortunate that he didn't fall and get run over by the cop. Yes, you can postulate many scenarios and the guy had just endangered people but there was no immediate threat. You are giving over way too much power to law enforcement.

I imagine his adrenaline was soaring... Most probably he's gonna feel them bruises big time next morning.

/When deadly force is justified, why use a gun when you can use a car...?

Most cops do receive advanced driver training, but I don't feel that anyone should be allowed to use deadly force when there is no deadly threat. And there is no way the cop can know whether the guy is going to get run over or bump and run like he did. The cop hit him at a speed that would have carried the car over the runner had the runner fell.

oi_piss_me_off [TotalFark] 2008-02-17 10:03:48 AM
I think that those helicopter that follow car chases should be given long range dart guns, to sedate the people who try to bail out of the car and run.

Because he showed his reckless disregard for public safety and needs to be prevented from continuing such actions. Is that too complex a concept for ya?

Why do you feel that my asking a question, on topic, is trolling? I agree with you that he "showed his reckless disregard for public safety and needs to be prevented from continuing such actions" but the immediate danger had passed. Maybe the cops should handcuff the guy, have him kneel by the road, and assassinate the bastard. You know, in case the perp was still thinking about doing bad things.

"Most cops do receive advanced driver training, but I don't feel that anyone should be allowed to use deadly force when there is no deadly threat. "

That's so true, because if they ever catch you trying to use deadly force on a mugger/burglar, etc., when that person is no longer a threat, you'll probably will be serving more time in jail than the perp. You try running down some criminal with a car, and watch criminal and civil charges get thrown at you.

Amen. I am far from a tree-hugger as was previously suggested. We in America have the legal right to defend ourselves with deadly force and should exercise that right, but only when we are in danger. A person fleeing the scene and not brandishing a weapon, poses no immediate threat.

Are you seriously arguing that you think it would have been okay if the cops had killed the guy as he was running away?

I'm a citizen and I routinely aim at people. Yesterday on the way to work for example. Guy is walking down the middle of the road. When he realized I wasn't going to swerve he moved. Same thing happened today but this time around I got a lot closer than normal.

/dude probably crapped his pants on that one
