Eh. My sister does it fairly often. However, she bottles it herself from the house tap. Her kids have checked; it tastes better.

I drink carbonated water. Hard to get it from a tap.

Bottled water doesn't float over and make my clothing smell like shiat.

"We have to make people think that it's unfashionable just as we have with smoking. We need a similar campaign to convince people that this is wrong," said Tim Lang, the Government's naural resources commissioner.

Water is a necessity of life. I say Mr. Lang's use of oxygen should be labeled as unfashionable.

Could NOT care less what this British hand-wringing nanny says.

We have bottled products...juices, colas, beers, and water. Bottled water is in no way "more evil" than any other bottled product. These jackasses have somehow decided that they are going to focus on the healthiest of the bottled products to go after first.

Screw you. Force me to stop drinking bottled water and I will start drinking bottled juice instead. What exactly will you have accomplished idiot? NOTHING.

Mind your own business.

I drink mostly tap water, but I have to say, I've never liked the tap water in the US, no matter what part of it I was in.

Every time I see a link on Fark to a UK news source I think "f*ck me, what now."

Is there any facet of life that the British Government doesn't have an opinion on? Just off the top of my head, they've got more CCTV cameras than anywhere else in the world and now they can talk to people through them, they want a National ID card with all kinds of personal data on it that they plan to share across the whole government and sell to private companies, they want to introduce congestion charges in most cities, they want everybody to use a smartcard system for public transport which just coincidentally allows them to track where and when you go, they want to introduce permits for smoking, they are trying to bully people into only eating locally grown food, and now they don't want people drinking bottled water.

And I'm sure that's not the half of it.

If people want to drink bottled water then farking let them, so long as their bottled water doesn't affect me or my family.

If people want to smoke then farking let them, so long as their smoke doesn't affect me or my family.

GAT_00 [TotalFark] 2008-02-16 10:39:26 PM
Well, I get my water from the Tennessee. I'll drink it, and do, but if I have some bottled water, I'd rather drink that than have to drink all the shiat that's in the Tennessee. Clean up the damn rivers, then bottled water will fall out of style.

NancyGracesTesticles 2008-02-16 10:44:09 PM
My car doesn't have a water spigot. What should I do on long trips? I've outgrown drinking pee.

This. The usual argument about bottled water is that it's *so much cheaper* to get it from the tap/in larger quantities/etc. While this is true, it's true of ALL convenience items. For instance, in my local store down the street I can purchase a 20oz of soft drink or a 2-liter of soft drink for about the same price; you pay for the consumable in convenient packaging.

If there's a market for it, and it's not harming anything, leave it alone.

zeal1517 2008-02-16 10:52:15 PM
Oh, and the part about CO2 emissions the article mentions-- I'd like to see the numbers on what other 'bottled' items produce vs. tap water. You know, for comparison.

Yesdog: I drink carbonated water. Hard to get it from a tap.

Hint: most carbonated water has the carbonation added afterwards, and most carbonated water sold in Germany (and probably in the States) is from some mundane source. Adding the carbonation is not hard.

I haven't seen anything similar in the US, because Americans aren't as fond of carbonated water as Europeans are, but there's the Soda Club and similar machines available over there. Mine was 15 EUR (on clearance), and the refill cylinders, good for about 60 liters of water, are 8 EUR to rent (return when empty).

It's actually no cheaper than grocery-store brand carbonated water, but beats the heck out of dragging 40 lbs of water up the stairs to my apartment. And my town's tap water tastes like awesome once it's been run through a Brita, so it's great carbonated.

Who knew I was being so environmentally friendly?

I fill up my giant 5 gallon jugs for $.25 a gallon. I don't care if it's "mountain spring water" from some remote mountain in Japan or local tap water they filtered. Either way, whatever they do to it makes it taste a whole lot better than the crap that comes straight out of the tap.

jackandwater 2008-02-17 12:13:22 AM
I drink bottled water. I fill my reuseable 5 gal. bottle,at the "Aquabar" machine and get reverse osmosis filtered water, put it in my water cooler, fill my nalgene water bottle for $1.25 for 5 gals. And I drink water all the time. What is the big deal?

Can we at least hold off and make Ms Spears and that Hilton slut unfashionable first, then worry about the horrors of bottled water.

Gosh, maybe our local and state politicos could do something productive while waiting like fix the farking potholes in the roads, kick the illegals of the dole and quit handing out
"free services" paid for by you and me (El Slavos de State).

Nah, that would involve actually doing their farking job, upholding the law, protecting the interests of their constituency and working within a budget like the rest of us farking peons.

How unfashionable.

I know some places have crappy-tasting water.

Not Colorado though. I have delicious, cool, genuine pure Rocky Mountain spring water running out of my kitchen tap, showerhead, and garden hose. Buying water her in hand-sized disposable bottles for day to day drinking identifies you as an idiot, a stooge, a moran, a sucker, a rube.

Millzners 2008-02-17 12:15:54 AM
State College PA tap water is better than anything you'll ever drink from a (water) bottle. It's as good as water gets -- and it comes from Bellefonte.

Eidolon 2008-02-17 12:16:09 AM
Blah blah blah - how much CO2 does a liter of Gatorade or Coca-cola generate? I try to drink tap water, but if I'm thirsty and I want something to drink, a bottle of water is better than a Sprite. There are better ways to encourage drinking tap water than hysteria over global warming.

Wouldn't fighting coffee drinking be more viable? First off, I see more coffee cups littering the ground than water bottles (which I don't see often). I especially see them out from of coffee shops (no duh!) but there are no water shops littered with them.

Couple that with the fact that the coffee industry is built on the backs of underpaid labour in foreign countries, that it's actually an unhealthy drink in many regards, and probably more reasons, banning coffee would make a lot more sense.

By the way I am not for banning coffee. I'm just making a point that there are bigger evils than bottled water.

/not a sound argument against coffee

I buy a large bottle (1.5 liters) once a month for use at work. When it's empty, I refill it from the tap at home, but first I rinse it out good & let it sit & air for awhile in the drainer so it doesn't get a stale taste. I've tried taking a travel cup, but since my job at work requires me to be constantly talking on the phone, it's a pain in the ass to have to frequently get up & refill the travel cup. It's just easier to fill the 1.5 liter bottle at home the night before & letting it sit overnight also gets rid of the chlorine taste too.

When I get a new bottle, the old one goes in the recycle bin.

I'm not a fan of bottled water (I think it's a scam) but if I'm stuck someplace without a fountain and have to choose between bottled water and bottled soda, I'm going with the water.

I think TFA's point is that people who buy bottled water to drink at home should start drinking tap water instead. Which is a good idea, if one is lucky enough to live in an area with clean water. (I grew up drinking well water, and it was the color of pee most of the time.)

Jadedgrl 2008-02-17 12:28:21 AM
A lot of bottled water tastes strange to me. The only kind that I've found to be any good is Poland Spring.
I live right near a lake, and while the tap water here isn't too bad, there's no way of knowing what's actually in it.

Get Lost: oh what lovely teeth you have there from drinking toxic fluoride in the regular water.

Er, fluoride cleans teeth, buddy. 's why American teeth look better than British (image spam goes here). Not one person I know has this...somehow I doubt it can be caused simply by drinking form a tap as a kid.

Obscure 2008-02-17 12:30:47 AM
Get Lost: oh what lovely teeth you have there from drinking toxic fluoride in the regular water.

Yeah, this is still seen as tin-foil hat issue, but if you do any research into the subject, you'll find that putting flouride in the water will probably one day been seen as about as sensible as having x-ray machines in shoe stores.

Unfortunately, people still associate the issue with John Birch Society paranoia, even though the same people will be extra-careful not to buy certain kinds of carpeting, for fear they are contaminating the air with toxic chemicals.

Whether flouride should be in toothpaste is debatable, but there really is no evidence that ingesting it is good for your teeth, and a lot of evidence that it is bad for both your teeth and bones.

Pegasus_CAG 2008-02-17 12:31:03 AM
Of course they don't want you to drink bottled water. They aren't adding the mind control drugs, experimental serums, or waterborne infection agents into the bottled stuff. How do you expect the government to keep its population under complete control if you won't drink what you're told to drink?

I would feel better if that were a satirical website, like 'The Onion', but sadly, they were serious.

What's sad, is that while I live in Texas, and have lived in Texas for the better part of the last 20 years, I learned how to talk in England (used to live there), and I still have a strong british accent (I might have lost it if it wasn't for years of watching British Comedies and Doctor Who), and when people hear me talk, they think that I am british and ask me what the fark is up with England. I haven't been there in over 25 years, so really, I don't know.

Obscure 2008-02-17 12:33:07 AM
