Wow.
Nicely done.

Yea, but can she master Freebird on Guitar Hero? I thought not, dumb b*tch. She should learn to play a real game.

sarcastrophe 2008-02-16 09:59:47 PM
Ummmm... she's not that great really. Average, maybe. A lot of it just seemed like scales. Her father (I assume) was much, much better.

Gangway Fathead 2008-02-16 10:37:45 PM
Good for her. Great Bluegrass musicians are always amazing.

I gotta admit, that headline is right. I've been playing guitar for over 20 years now and I stopped getting better about 19 ago.

Not for lack of trying, I swear. I put a lot of hours into trying and my dumb clumsy hands never seemed to go for it.

EminenceFront 2008-02-16 10:38:47 PM
Not bad. Try it again. This time with more feeling

MikeXpop 2008-02-16 10:50:56 PM
Uh, she's alright at guitar. She's farking incredible at the mandolin.

Wow, I was going to write about how I thought I was going to be the next rock god when I got a guitar at 13, but instead I'll tell you about the guy that just got on the bus who smells like pee. For the love of god it smells so bad right now, I'm seriously feeling faint. I've never encountered an amonia stench so strong, I don't think I'm gonna make it...

TheDuderino 2008-02-17 12:59:20 AM
When she writes a song that is pleasant to listen to I will care. She's good at the guitar, obviously, but people always forget that playing the instrument is the easy part. The hard part is writing music. What kind of idiot do you have to be to sit down after dinner, relax, and throw on a farking Steve Vai record. The point of a song shouldn't be to prove how good you are at playing a particular instrument. I want a song with meaning not 4 minutes of masturbation. I prefer musicians who hit the right notes instead of the most notes.

CitizenTed [TotalFark] 2008-02-17 01:37:13 AM
Long time guitarist here. The girl has talent. She has mastered the technical aspects of playing. But like Duderino said, the music she is playing is just fun fluff. Yet this music and her obviously supportive father will help her hone her craft. One day, she may be truly great.

And now, some words from the Guru, Robert Fripp:

"Any fool can play something difficult."
"Discharge one small task superbly."
"Playing fast is easier than playing slow."
"The musician has three disciplines: the discipline of the hands, the head and the heart."

pngwnpwr 2008-02-17 02:09:49 AM
I challenge her to Phrygian mode at dawn. Eh who am I kidding, I have played longer than she has been alive and she is faster than me.

/I invented the brown note

TheDuderino: I want a song with meaning not 4 minutes of masturbation. I prefer musicians who hit the right notes instead of the most notes.

Because you cant have both? that argument is so played out and tired, *wheres the feeling* well obviously shes feeling it or she wouldn't be playing it, just because its fast doesn't mean its void of feeling, and just because its slow, doesn't mean its saturated with feeling.

Bluegrass is fun to play, in turn something fun evokes happiness, which is a feeling. So, if someone is truly enjoying what they're playing they're happy. So there's your feeling at 196bpm. get over yourself.

Subby assumes that there are no musicians reading. Subby is incorrect.

Playing a bunch of scales like she is now fun and evokes happiness? So does that mean that when those "rappers" yell about biatches, rims, dope and gats they have some supernatural skill also?

If someone is happy playing those scales and bluegrass stuff then good more power to them, but I wouldn't go on and on about what an awesome musician they are unless they can actually WRITE some good songs. It has nothing to do with the speed they are playing at. If a drummer can pull off some crazy 30 minute then it's like yeah ok you are really good at the drums, i get it but i don't want to sit down and listen to you go crazy on the drums for hours on end, i want to hear a SONG.

I donate my used guitar strings to the homeless shelter in Negonquin. Does that make me a good guitar player?

It's rather obvious that some of the commenters here have no idea what Bluegrass flatpicking is.

Wanking in your basement with your Korean copy of a Jackson through your 15 watt combo amp and death metal pedal doesn't make you an authority on anything- it makes you an object of ridicule. The grownups here are being polite by not pointing and laughing at you. If you want to seem important I'm sure YouTube comments are more suitable for you.

Martstar 2008-02-17 03:58:13 AM
Screw that haters, that girl is a hell of a player. Let's just hope she doesn't become the Britney of bluegrass....

scotth 2008-02-17 04:26:14 AM
Perhaps we should get all the non-scale playing haters here to post a video. Let US judge who has talent.

I spent a few joyful minutes listening to her play.
I spent a few wasted minutes reading you punks whine. Get a hobby griefers!

grxymkjbn 2008-02-17 05:25:20 AM
If life were fair, she'd have to be hideously ugly or deformed to be able to play that well at such a young age.

quegrandes 2008-02-17 05:28:03 AM
People like TheDuderino and CitizenTed need to stop getting their panties in a twist over subby's hyperbole and enjoy the farking music.

Is it always about writing songs? No, sometimes you throw something together and record it, because you enjoy playing and want to share. Are they running scales? Yes, a lot of music involves a lot of jumping around scales, and people enjoy it. Does it get old? Yes, eventually. So then you listen to something else. Is the music less "good" or "enjoyable" because of it? No, and anyone who thinks so is a close-minded fool.

Just chill.

Funny, I just saw/heard a song. Well played, too. The girls' got natural, God-given talent and obviously has a good time playing it. Appears the other musicians in the room also got a kick out of it.
I agree with the other poster who said good bluegrass players are amazing to watch. These folks fit that description.
No pretense, no moody-assed, Dylan-esque deep soul-searching, no wotdsworth lyrics, just some very talented folks having a good time playing together.

I'd pay and sit and watch them for a couple hours, no sweat....and I'd have a darn good time doing so.

Not a fan of bluegrass, but she's something! It's great that she's spending time like this with her dad, too. And obviously having a fabulous time. IMO that will go a long way in keeping her from becoming the country Britney Spears if she ever does get "discovered"... her family is nurturing her talent instead of pimping her out in the dog & pony show.

moparedtn 2008-02-17 06:19:58 AM
Her dad actually is playing upright bass off-camera, according to the description on Youtube.
I've been watching some videos of her performing. Thanks, subby!
I've just discovered another wonderfully talented musician. She is indeed hellaciously good on mandolin!

Don't be hating on this young lady, people. From the interviews I've just watched, she's remarkably humble and well-adjusted (apparently she's around 18 now) for her age and absolutely loves music. Parents have done a great job with her and are to be commended.

The Dynamite Monkey 2008-02-17 09:13:00 AM
She is a remarkably good player for her age. But for those of you who are jealous of her "god given talent", I say BS, she got her goods the same place EVERYONE gets theirs: in the woodshed. And you can all go there and get yours too, if you've got the time.

Yes some people seem to have aptitudes greater than others. But you only get your technique one way.

Ummmm, no.
Just with any other talents/abilities humans have, we all have aptitudes in some of them, not so much in others.
We're not all built or wired the same, after all.
True, we can all work hard at it and achieve some level of competent ability with musical instruments, but there are simply some that are born a leg up on the rest of us.
They are not to be smited or mocked for being so blessed.

If the phrase "God-given" offends you, c'est la vie.
Regardless, the young lady has natural ability" in spades (you like that phrasing better? I'm so glad then).

Unlike your hero, I don't see her winding up a druggie/drunk and dead early in life, nor are those "qualities" a requisite for being looked up upon in musical circles.

Something is seriously wrong with a society that can only make icons of twisted, messed up souls who waste their abilities and, ultimately, their lives.

Actually, his true feelings are, "I don't kow how to play that well, so I create songs that I can handle and even if I screw THAT up, it's ok - because nobody has ever head it before".

This is no shiat - we played a show at the end of the year at a place we had been trying to get in for a year. We let an original band play a set and not only lost all the customers, but we lost any chance at another gig. Nobody wants to hear jumbled up crap for an hour. Most people don't mind original music as long as they are hearing what they paid a cover charge to hear.

Notice how it's alwys the original bands making the cover vs. original argument? Cover bands don't give a crap. We don't need to make ourselves feel better at the expense of others.

All that being said, that girl smoked it. What she played is tough on a electric, but on acoustic, it's very, very difficult. I bow to her superior skills.

Wow, you're kind of a dick!

You're also mistaken if you think technique on an instrument comes from anything but discipline. If she is better than you she practices harder than you do. You may want to notice I said that "some people seem to have aptitudes greater than others" - so I am not saying it comes to everyone at the same pace. But a small amount of hard work goes way further than all the "gifts" in the world without it.

And also, I am not sure where drugs entered the discussion. I mentioned I liked johnny thunders to ensure that anyone reading my post knew I am a somewhat undisciplined player, as he was.

But it's one line of your post that shows your cards: "If the phrase "God-given" offends you, c'est la vie." You wanna give someone else credit for your hard work, you have at it. No offense taken. Whatever floats your boat.

But why don't you let the young lady get the credit for it herself? She's earned it.

mahavishnunj 2008-02-17 10:54:20 AM
i love all the morons who point out how anything that features what they consider fast playing has no 'feeling'. shes not even playing fast, its just straight 16ths-so you guys look even gheyer. if you cant play straight lines like she can, youre crying about feeling because you cant do it. i thought she was good as hell for her age, she obviously started playing at 6 months old.

i mean, she's not bad, but the guy playing mando is actually doing most of the lead work, it looks like.
She's not bad, but don't confuse playing fast with playing well--nothing either of them is playing is particularly complicated, and it's very obvious they had rehearsed the piece a number of times before this recording.

luckybastard 2008-02-17 02:03:15 PM
She's skillful, but I subscribe to the old '3 chords and the truth' school of music (mainly because that's pretty much all I can play)
