Bud has NO PLACE in any list except WORST beers lists. Seriously, Budweiser, a top 20 beer? unfarkingbelievable.

Insulting.

iron city and amstel light. where's the PBR and the Old Style?

he's listed crap and then good belgian beers. i'm guessing this guy is 22 and he's only drank 20 beers in total. and here they are

Coffin_Coroner 2008-02-16 02:09:44 PM
Sierra Nevada and Guinness got their props so I cant complain......

But yea, if bud is at 20, then all other brews like Petes Wicked or Brooklyn or whatever the hell didnt make the list come after that??

albo [TotalFark] 2008-02-16 02:11:06 PM
Brodan: Seriously, Budweiser, a top 20 beer

but you have to give them some credit for the contributions bud made to the science of brewing the same crap beer consistently at all their breweries. that was a big innovation, at least

dickkead [TotalFark] 2008-02-16 02:12:02 PM
Natty Boh, oddly not #1.

(or even on the list, for that matter)

Zarkin Frood [TotalFark] 2008-02-16 02:14:59 PM
Those are all pretty good beers. Best in the world? I doubt it.

And Chimay is only 11? For shame!

Sierra Nevada tastes like pee. Of course, I think all IPAs do.

FTFA: I have assembled a list of 20 beers that should be tried at least once...I am not saying that these are the best beers.

Including Budweiser is like saying "everyone needs to be punched in the crotch at least once in their lifetime."

I would have replaced Dead Guy with Hazelnut Brown.

Oh, and if you ever find a Yazoo Hop Project #5, by all means, GET IT.

LaZBoy82 2008-02-16 02:30:56 PM
I think all beers should be tried in great amounts as often as possiable.

/ I just heard about "Billy" beer a few weeks ago. Its funny that he had a major drinking problem and now helps others quit drinking.

19. Iron City?

Stopped reading. Obviously a joke article.

AntiNorm [TotalFark] 2008-02-16 02:50:48 PM
Budweiser is on the list. That is an automatic FAIL.

Amstel Light is also on the list. Fail.

Starr Hill is NOT on the list. Fail.

Alas, not only was it limited to October-January, they decided sales of it weren't sufficiently strong, and it won't be coming back next season.

The list reads like the best of fast food restaurants list but then lists a 4-star establishment as number one. Dump the list – keep the Trappist Westvleteren 12.

KyngNothing [TotalFark] 2008-02-16 03:22:54 PM
Half of them are breweries, not "beers"...

// Which Victory? Sam Smith? wtf?

SilentStrider [TotalFark] 2008-02-16 03:23:20 PM
list is pretty much meaningless and subjective.

that said, nice to see my faves (Yuengling and Guinness) in there.

Chucklz [TotalFark] 2008-02-16 03:32:31 PM
Most of them are breweries and not a specific beer. And Hop Devil "super strong" at 6.7% ABV. What utter shiat. DFH Fort would like a few words with this guy.

Have you tried Left Hand Milk Stout?
It's higher quality and available year round.

As for the list...
FTA:
"I am not saying that these are the best beers, but instead represent a nice variety from which to pick and choose."

He says Bud is a beer that everyone should try once. I agree. Everyone should try it to see how a very expensively produced beer can taste so boring. AB spends millions each year to make a beer that appeals to the broadest of palates. It's like spending a hundred bucks on ingredients and making macaroni and cheese that tastes like cardboard.

I agree with some of his picks (Hop Devil, Ommegang, Chimay, Sam Smith, Guinness).

If he wants to introduce beers to people he should have a lambic and a kolsch on the list too. He needs Anchor Steam too. Anchor single handedly recreated the American quality brewing business after it was decimated by prohibition.

Here's my list of favorite beers in case any of my fellow beer snobs want to have a real discussion:
The list is organized top to bottom but subject to change as mood strikes me. Suffice it to say that I would never, under any circumstances turn down any of my listed beer:

Guinness Draught
Victory Hop Wallop
Liefmans Goudenband
Great Divide St. Brigit's Porter
North Coast Old 38 Stout
Victory Prima Pils
Real Ale Full Moon Pale Rye
Anchor Steam
Lagunitas Maximus IPA
Anchor Steam
Ommegang Three Philosophers
Chimay Cinq Cents (White label)
Hacker-Pschorr Helles (Munich Gold)
Sam Smith Imperial Stout
Shiner Kolsch
Sierra Nevada Porter
Lindemans Kriek
Agustinerbrau Helles
North Coast Old Stock Ale
Tripel Karmeliet

No, no he wasn't. He mentions all the Europeans he saw drinking Budweiser though, so perhaps he is confused.

/Nothing left for me to say. Oh, except that Minnesota is missing two beers on the list: Summit's Extra Pale Ale; and Surly, who 3 years into brewing have already won best beer in the world awards.

I do not enjoy Budweiser, but I have to give AB some respect for their quality control and operational effectiveness (yes, I'm an MBA business geek). All that being said, this needs to be on the list...

maybe he's referring to the strength of the hops, because it's immensely hoppy. and one of the top IPAs in the world (it's won awards). the victory prima pils is also an excellent exemplar of its kind

Neither of them are available in Central Texas, but I'll keep my eyes open. I like a good IPA. Thanks for the tip.

I know all about the Prima Pils, I'm a bit of a hop head. Right now I'm really craving a Weyerbacher Double Simcoe IPA.

BTW, RagingLeonard, I saw you mention Hacker-Pschorr Helles (Munich Gold). I had one of their stronger offerings (Hacker-Pschorr Animator) in Munich, and I really enjoyed it.

And for something a bit different, I really liked Splugen Bock when I was in Italy. I swear, that was the only decent beer I could get from that brewery, so I drank a lot of it when I was in Rome. (That was twenty years ago, though, so things might have changed)

Infamous Dr. X: I do not enjoy Budweiser, but I have to give AB some respect for their quality control and operational effectiveness (yes, I'm an MBA business geek). All that being said, this needs to be on the list...

Finally someone that gets it! While Budweiser may not be up to most people's high standards and is not as tasty as that unpronounceable beer that is brewed high in the Alps by monks who don't speak but during the waning first quarter phase of the moon and they somehow manage to not cast shadows, it is amazing how a beer so mass produced tastes exactly the same no matter where you buy it. They have perfected their process and their beer is actually quite drinkable.

Props to Yeungling on that list, that's hands down my favorite "every day" type beer. Also, they're a very small brewery compared to Bud, so you'd think their quality control would be better? Nope, I've had some RANK kegs of Yeungling before. Just another testament to the process AB has perfected with Bud.

Also, there's few things better to quench your thirst on a hot day then an ice cold Bud long neck. When I'm out at a ball game, I'm drinking Bud, not kicking back with a bag of roasted peanuts and some Belgian triple boch or something like that.

But yeah lot's missing from that list, no Dogfish, no Stone, no Spaten , no Warhefenstiener (not even close to spelling that right), Brooklyn lager?? Bass Ale? C'mon!

20. Budweiser - List automatically fails for including this.
18. Amstel Light - Light beer, in my top 20 beers article? It could be more likely than you think.
15. Foster's - The Budweiser of Australia. Marginally better, but still crappy mass-produced lager.
13. Corona - See above, only replace "Australia" with "Mexico" and remove "marginally better."
11. Chimay - Dear gods, they actually got one right! But #11??? Chimay is in my top 5, and I've had a _lot_ of different types of beers.
9. Paulaner - Pretty good stuff, a great hefe-weizen, though not as good as Kapuziner, IMO.
8. Newcastle - No. fark no. Again, emphatically, NO. The fact that they ranked this above Chimay is extremely insulting. Newcastle tastes to me like someone took a perfectly good brown ale and mixed it with powdered sugar and sea urchin.
6. Rogue - Yeah, these guys generally make some awesome stuff. Their "Shakespeare Stout" is tied with Lost Coast's "8 Ball" as my favorite stout.
5. Sam Smith's - Not bad, but not amazing either, and not better than Rogue or Lost Coast.
3. Guinness - It's... okay. I'll willingly drink it for free, but as stouts go, it's pretty "meh." Also has an odd metallic taste to it.
2. Sierra Nevada - Not bad. More-or-less my beer "training wheels," but I've since moved on to better stuff. They're about the least of the US Pacific coast microbreweries, but that still places it well above the likes of Foster's, Corona, and Budweiser.

The winner I've _heard of_, but never managed to score for myself, unfortunately. I'd really like to some day, though, as I've heard it's amazing stuff.

My own picks for best beers (according to my own taste, at least) in no particular order:

Lost Coast - Downtown Brown
Anchor Steam Beer
Full Sail - Wassail (winter ale)
Chimay - Grande Reserve
Delerium Tremens
Gulden Draak
Spaten - Optimator
Old Rasputin Imperial Stout
Lindemans Framboise Lambic (hey, it sorta counts!)

albo [TotalFark] 2008-02-16 04:08:55 PM
Chucklz: Weyerbacher Double Simcoe IPA.

another excellent pennsylvania microbrewer. in my neck of the woods it's troegs and stoudts
