+1 Subby.

/Wonder why?

As a former long-time FLauderdalian (I made that word up), it looks like I got out just in time. A nice city to be from.

I spent some time in Baltimore, K.C> and Louisville, and they are nice enough to visit.

Houston, not so much. Even with most of Texas between it and me, I wish it were further away.

Firetini [TotalFark] 2008-02-16 01:37:08 PM
Houston is proof that everything is indeed bigger in Texas.

Including most Houstonians..

Is it still ranked the fattest in the nation?
I thought "they" changed that last year.

Researching...OIC Las Vegas is now #1...San Antonio even leads Houston...bwahaha!

#4 - yeah baby!

the downtown revitalization has been grueling (construction) for the past few years, but it's finally showing results. lots of new businesses and events at the new sprint center, and more coming through the summer. i've worked downtown for 8 years, and i've spent more evenings there in the past several months than in all of the time before that. there are actually things to do now

Baltimore is underrated in how many ways you can die in that city, but I don't see anything else.

Don't worry, subby... that is never something I will be likely to say.

Well, I've only been to two of the five cities, but, I have to agree with the choices of those two. You always hear about the crime and stuff with Baltimore, but, I had a great time there, and the Fells Point area has some excellent bar/restaurants there. Louisville has some very quirky places and a good college vibe feel in much of the town. Of course, if you go to somewhere like Kentucky Kingdom, you'll definitely see some of the "outside locals", but, just like any town, you have to know which parts of town to hit.

/was only in Baltimore two years ago, so, don't know if subby is talking about me

Is it the Syphilis or Gonorrhea capital of the US, I can't remember.

dletter [TotalFark] 2008-02-16 02:26:00 PM
Just read more of the Louisville part of the article, made some good points, but, Kentucky Kingdom is a pit as far as roller coaster parks go, IMHO, and this is fairly typical of what you'll see roaming around there:

nice to see Ft Lauderdale so high up on the list.

/is from there
//it really is a great city.

Kaeishiwaza 2008-02-16 03:01:47 PM
I'm upset NYC wasn't on the list. Sure it's awesome, much more awesome than any other city in the world. But really, in actuality it is even MORE awesome than most people give it credit for. Therefore, it is still underrated.

\awesome!

meatofmystery 2008-02-16 03:02:43 PM
declining murder rate and already B'more's getting a big head.

After living there for a year, I'm so incredibly happy I managed to get out of there. What a dump.

I live in San Jose, but I've traveled to all those cities but Louisville. I was honestly surprised at how incredible Kansas City was (probably because I thought it would be a depressing flyover state sh**hole). It was really charming and I really enjoyed it. On the other hand, Houston is a sewer. Baltimore is probably the most decrepit, most depressing city I've ever visited (though, to be fair, I have never been to Detroit).

8. Portland

Possibly...but only during the 2 or 3 months out of the year when the precipitation lets up. Otherwise it's a damp, cold, dreary and depressing sh*thole.

Toledo.

NOT ON THE LIST.

raistlinknight 2008-02-16 03:11:22 PM
Baltimore underrated? I wouldn't be surprised if it had the highest murder rate for a city of that size. As someone who has lived in Maryland for half of my life, I can say honestly that Baltimore is a hell hole.

DemoKnite 2008-02-16 03:11:31 PM
Houston is way too spread out andhas a terrible public transport system. Old time racism is alive and well. Its hot as balls. Im not sure how it even made the list.

kenwastinger 2008-02-16 03:12:30 PM
hahahaha, I love that Houston is getting bashed. That city sucks ass.

Welcome to the Machine [TotalFark] 2008-02-16 03:12:41 PM
What, no Charlotte?
It has a great arts support...no,guess not.
World class sports teams.....ok, mediocre.
Crime is low.......damn!
The road system is......inadequate.
The yuppies are helping to.....oh fark it they ruin anything that is promising.

/at least the strippers can touch you. Not "there"
//and we're getting a first class drag strip.

You are a piece of work. Don't go in drug hoods and the city is great. You must have never visited here before. Just talking out your butt.

but...but..but..Birmingham..

Person 2008-02-16 03:13:55 PM
Yikes... I wouldn't exactly call them underrated cities, more like cities people avoid for a lot of reasons.

Ah. So I WAS right about being the only one. I lived there for 4 years and loved it.

I like Memphis, although it seems no one else does. Fun bars, good music, great bbq. Close to lots of good college football towns. Not too cold. Hot girls.

Just don't get shot, and it's cake.

As someone who's lived in Maryland for my whole life (Barring the current school-excursion to Kansas), you're doing it wrong. Baltimore can be a lot of fun and quite safe if you're just not a dumbass about where you go alone after dark. Inner Harbour, Canton, Fells Point, Federal Hill, the Washington Street-Camden Yards area, Mt. Vernon, Broadway 'round JHU, Lexington and Broad Street Markets...

learn2fly 2008-02-16 03:18:35 PM
Yea. Kansas City is nice. Especially Troost and Independence Avenue. I suggest everyone that visits KC make that their first stop. Around say, midnight - 2:00 in the morning.

Ever see COPS in Kansas City? ~shudder~

I went to the Baltimore boardwalk at noon on a Sunday and was robbed by a uniformed police officer driving some kind of golf cart thing. I let it got because I just figured that was the local culture

semiotix 2008-02-16 03:18:52 PM
I'd like to give Pittsburgh a nod here. Most people forgot about the Burgh back in the 70s, when it was a smoky hole of unemployment and decay. But it's really rebounded--the air is clean now, the neighborhoods have been restored, and it's got the best art and music scenes for six hours in any direction.

Now, on behalf of its residents, fark off and stay away.

Philadelphia - #5:
How miserable is Philly? The residents of the City of Brotherly Love once booed Santa Claus and pelted him with snowballs at an Eagles game. Maybe it's the long commutes, violent crime and plethora of toxic waste sites that has people grumpy. Philadelphia scored in the top 20 in all three areas.

The Santa Clause thing happened in the 1960s; do we mention the Kennedy Assination every time Dallas is mentioned? The snowball thing was a football game against the hated Cowboys nearly 20 years ago (I was there). But yeah, all the rest is also true, grumble grumble. Not miserable, dammit...

I was in Baltimore for two weeks on business. It sucked. The harbor sucked.

The front desk clerk at the Holiday Inn Express at the Stadium, 10 out of 10.

She was the best thing in Baltimore.
