This is why I love dogs. Also, cats are evil and they make me sneeze. Also also, when I was little, I would play in the front yard and the only babysitter I needed was our German Shepherd. If anybody came near the yard, he would bark once. Then the person would cross to the other side of the street. Aaahh, memories.

Let's see a 5yr old kid ride on the back of a cat as though it was his own personal armored fightin' beast.

I'm not in the military, i'm sure there are health and safety concerns and all that that are legitimate...but wouldn't having a dog do a lot for morale?? Just let em keep the farking dog.

I read an article where the only way this one base could keep their dog was by saying it was a guard dog because it barked when people came to the base.

wtf its a dog. is it more dangerous than the bullets flying around?

Erik_Emune 2008-02-16 02:53:22 PM
Wait, wait, I got something in my eye.

Dogs are weak individuals who require companionship.

Cats don't care if you live or die.

Go cats.

In every war movie I ever saw, pets/mascots always got killed. It's like God has it in for them. No wonder the military doesn't want them near the troops.

Big deal, it's a DOG.

So, walking through a war zone is a matter of luck, not risking someone recognizing you are the enemy and shooting you.

Some starving Iraqi will probably eat it in a couple of weeks anyway.

That reminds me of a story about one of the Thai ridgeback dogs. They're some ancient breed that isn't really that great of a pet but they'll protect and serve you for life.

During the Vietnam war, a US marine in Thailand found a ridgeback puppy that had been abandoned by the mother. He nursed it like a baby until it was older, at which time he kept the dog outside and placed a tray of food for it each day.

Everywhere he went the dog followed him, out on patrols or wherever. It was never more than a few feet from his side. After a few years went by, the soldier was scheduled to go home. As he got on the plane, the dog wanted in, and anyone trying to stop the dog would get snapped at. The soldier finally told the dog he was leaving, and with a tear in his eye he closed the door.

Of course, the dog chased the plane down the runway and barked as it flew out of sight. He presumably roamed the countryside searching for the soldier for a few days then returned to the base. He went back to the barracks door where his food normally was and waited.

Other soldiers tried feeding the dog but he would not eat. He just kept on waiting. Eventually he died of starvation waiting for his master to come back. Sad but supposedly a true story.

That is one BAD ASS dog.

Good dog.

/Your dog wants less shrapnel

Once my dad had a dog, got hit by a truck and he took him to the vet, when Xrayed the vet saw that the dog had been shot by buckshot. Twice, years before my dad got him.

Used to run alongside his horse carriage into town with him. 25 miles there, 25 miles back, everyday.

/Rip Trapper and other Bad ass dogs.

I don't know about that story, but here are some (new window) (new window) (and some history to war dogs).

I'm not really a dog person..I've had cats all my life. But I have a cocker spaniel laying at my feet right now. He follows me to every room and just waits. He only barks if someone is near the house. Loves playing with little kids, even when they dress him up as a turtle.

Amazingly good companion. I'm quite the convert.

Shut up you old hag. Florida and wisdom aren't 2 things I'd put together at your age. If you were my mother that'd make you...about 70. Who's feeling old and decrepit now, baby? And I'm going to spin doughnuts on your lawn at 3 am now. Come catch me.
