China's policies:

Ghost videos: bad, evil. not allowed

Arresting Falun Gong followers, sending them to labor camps, killing them, ripping out all their organs and selling them on the black market: meh, no big deal.

The new guidelines aim to "control and cleanse the negative effect these items have on society, and to prevent horror, violent, cruel publications from entering the market through official channels and to protect adolescents' psychological health".

China is an amateur compared to Finland. I just posted a link (hopefully gets to Fark) about the Finnish police blocking a site that criticizes the unlawful blocking of net sites.

http://www.effi.org/julkaisut/tiedotteet/lehdistotiedote-2008-02-12-en.html
Although censorship is well-founded in Finland in matters of language politics (as in one cannot say it sucks that all are forced to learn Swedish, language that nobody really needs or wants to learn) the political blocking of net sites is new.
http://www.freewebs.com/kielipoliittinen_sensuuri/
(In Finnish, about the censorship.)

lehmukka 2008-02-14 08:59:57 AM
In Finland they started the blocking of net sites by claiming they will block child porn, although just about everyone knew that they will block whatever they want to.
http://www.lapsiporno.info/
So the site (above) criticizing net censorhip is now blocked by the major ISPs.

Wait until they see this outside their firewalls. That will hurt their psyches even more!!!

Just because many people don't agree with it, doesn't mean it should be banned. It is a slippery slope where it's Child porn today, but 16 and 17 year olds can't take pictures of themselves or videos, but they are old enough to have legal sex with each other(another dumb rule to get rid of right there). That makes perfect sense.

NOTHING should be banned, regardless of content. If nothing else it prevents false positives like the Coppertone girl or a 500 year old masterpiece from sending someone to prison. Our country was built on free speech, and if a few sporadic pervs get their rocks of with pictures, it just might prevent them from acting on their urges. It leaves us free, as was intended, and I think we can all agree that would be far better for everyone.

I don't see how suppressing freedom of speech is going to make them look better.

Wrong. We cannot all agree on that. What kind of damage do you think kiddie porn does to the kids involved. Sexualized as a child? Thats healthy. I am not going to comment on your 16-17 yr old reference, but any sort of pornography featuring a young child should be banned, and anyone trading in it imprisoned.

Do you hear that? it is the sound of millions of chinese raging because they are banning World of warcraft.
I mean if they ban ghost and monsters from Wow what is left? Everyone has to be human and you can only fight each other. I think this will cause another revolution, all sparked by Wow.

I come from a long line of dead folk. Many of my relatives happen to be dead. I've never heard them complain about it when I call them that. I mean, geez, it's not like your life is over because somebody called you something unflattering.

Fail. He walked out in front of the tanks. He kept himself in front of the tanks when they tried to go around him. He then climbed up on the lead tank. This was no accident of history.
