First time I saw it. I'm aware of the band, nothing more; aware of the game, never played - and this is still just awesome. :D

It's like watching racecar drivers play racing games, only... even better, I think. :)

I played GH for the first time last spring. I've played guitar for 14 years now...couldn't play GH for shiat. I think I'm too conditioned to a real guitar to just push buttons. I dunno..I haven't purchased a gaming console since the super nintendo.

I had the same issue. Playing for years now and I still got booed off stage on easy. Moral of the story? Video Games are not the same as real life.

I can imagine. Not played it, but having seen it played I fear my 25 years of bass playing won't be much help.

To be fair, Guitar Hero farks with a musician's concept of musicianship. Very few, if any, musicians picture music as colored shapes coming down a conveyor belt.

I always thought GH would make ppl more interested in learining a real instrument....not getting musicians to play console games.

daychilde: It's like watching racecar drivers play racing games, only... even better, I think. :)

I object. Most racing games are rather realistic as far as throttle control and steering, and setting up things like camber, rebound and tire pressure and all that. As a rule, if you can handle a race car, and know *anything* about car setup, racing games are pretty easy to adapt to as soon as you disengage yourself from the needing to feel the car through corners and all that.

Guitar Hero is to guitar playing what Tony Hawk Pro Skater is to racing.

I came to say something similar. Scott Ian more than likely looks at the guitar neck when he is figuring something out. It would be interesting to compare how quickly a guitarist who plays by sheet as they have trained themselves to look straight ahead and 'translate' a symbolic language into physical movement on the guitar.

If anything, the GH console is closest to a hurdy-gurdy. That'd be the more logical extension.

It's more like Guitar Hero is to real Guitar playing, as masturbation is to real sex.

They have some similarities, and both can be fun in their own way, but ability at one has no effect on having ability with the other.

Racist and sexist, yes. But, I don't think S.O.D. was ever meant to be taken seriously. The entire concept was tongue-in-cheek; a heavy, fast, thrash metal band as satire on its own genre, yet was still a GOOD heavy, fast, thrash metal band in its own right. :D

I have been playing music for over 10 years, and playing bass guitar for 2 years. I am not very good at guitar hero. The rhythm doesn't bother me, but getting all those buttons. To me it feels like the buttons you press barely corelate to the song. I think you could play it with the sound off and it would be the same. As a matter of face the dumass kids in my dorm often do play it with the sound off, while listening to other music on the stereo. I mean, come on.

Even if you have never played, getting booed offstage on easy is pretty pathetic.

Strange how prophetic "Fark the Middle East" seems nowadays. And the lyrics to "pussywhipped" are possibly the funniest lyrics to a metal song anyone could ask for.

I was just making the point about abilities, not about how any of the four activities would help you get the ladies (well, 3, obviously with the 4th activity, it is assumed you have the lady, and she wants to be there, hopefully).

And the analogy isn't meant as a insult against any of the four activities, as, all four are fun. Just an observation of the similarities between the two pairs.

Subby, playing guitar hero doesn't make you a guitar hero and vice-versa... IT'S NOT REAL IT'S A VIDEO GAME.

Just because you were good at Mortal Kombat doesn't mean you could whip Randy Couture's ass in a cage fight.

Move out of Mom's basement.

Saborlas [TotalFark] 2008-02-13 03:38:25 PM
The thing is that many real guitarists suck at Guitar Hero until they crank it up to Expert... they're so used to playing EVERY note.

Damien not Evil 2008-02-13 04:20:01 PM
I've played guitar and bass for eight years, and I was absolutely terrible at guitar hero for the most part. After playing a few times I got the hang of it, but it's not that exciting if theres not a bunch of drunk / stoned people around. Also, Saborlas, you're right. It was actually a bit easier on the harder difficulties for me. (I guess from naturally wanting to sound all the notes? I dunno)

And yes, the real guitars work much much better for the punani.
And respect.
And creativity.

Why do people still compare real life activites to their video-game counterparts? It's apples and ping pong balls.

Actually, playing Guitar Hero has made my sightreading skills get much better. I have a desire that I must hit every note if possible.. and for some reason, I just read music better.
