Holy balls, is he really 73? I would have figured maybe early sixties, but 73?!? Why does that seem disproportionately old to me?

bigbottom 2008-02-12 08:44:39 AM
According to Wikipedia his b'day is 02/12/1939 which makes him 69 not 73. Regardless he was a large part of the genius that was The Doors.

I got high as hell one day and listened to "Riders On The Storm". I tell you, if you really listen to the lyrics they will lead you to a buried treasure.

Earlier this month a Korean man told me I looked like Ray. That was a first.

A few years ago, some girl tried to tell me I looked like Jim Morrison. But when I took the duct tape off her mouth, she changed her story.

Ray was older than everybody else in the band by several years.

Have you ever seen Ray in an interview?

He uses the word "Man" more often than should ever be allowed

i.e "You know what man, Jim was just doing his thing man."

\Happy Birthday anyway

I give props to Ray Manzarek for producing X's seminal recordings and giving the L.A. Punk scene some cred. X to me is one of the greatest American rock bands around.

For the life of me I can't understand why he insisted on noodling his Wurlitzer all over Los Angeles.

I like the album and love X, don't get me wrong, but for a band that purposely downplayed musicianship, it felt wrong to have his playing featured so prominently. It's jarring.

Read "We Got the Neutron Bomb : The Untold Story of L.A. Punk". The Doors played a very important part in the beginnings of the LA Punk scene. I honestly couldn't believe it, but in many ways it's true. Iggy Pop was inspired by the Doors too and I wouldn't discount his part in the later Punk scene either.

As far as the presence of Manzarek on the first album, they wanted him on it. I remember when that LP came out and how immediate the acceptance of my non-punk, hippy types I hung out with was. A major plus and in my opinion Manzarek's keyboard work on the first album was neither intrusive or annoying to me.

You are also forgetting the musical experience and talent of Billy Zoom and D.J. Bonebreak, both very professional and talented musicians in their own right. Even before X.

I picked up a copy of Golden Scarab for 50 cents. Clean, no pops. Talk about something that fell down the memory hole...

Pacifica radio station WBAI 99.5 in New York used to have good fundraisers back in the 60s, as opposed to the snoozefest the station's become. So when The Doors came out people were contributing 25 dollars just to hear the full version of Light My Fire - in mono. BAI played it endlessly that year - and we liked it. The minimum wage was $1.25, cigarettes were 35-40 cents a pack and gas was 29.9 to put 25 bucks into perspective. I know. I was there - working, smoking and driving.

dogbone 2008-02-13 09:42:01 AM
I'm not forgetting anything. It was a wacked-out addition to an already tight set. It doesn't fit with the rest of the sound and thankfully Ray realized it as he didn't try to wedge his way into the other three albums he produced for them. To walk into the studio to record the album and say, "Hey kids, we're going to add a major component to your sound without road testing it or giving it some time to grow organically." is a recipe for exactly what happened -- it sounds forced and intrusive.

They were young, making their first album and they were starstruck so they didn't protest. The fact that his playing isn't on the next three albums speaks volumes.

I actually annoyed Ray Manzarek, once. I was taking his picture, taking too long for his taste, and he said "TAKE IT!!!"
