I dig Kravitz. I may not be privy to his newer stuff, but tracks such as "It ain't over till it's over," "believe," "can't get you off of my mind," and "rock n roll is dead" are definitely staples in my collection. That sounded like a cheesy line from a Time Life compilation.

His band is awesome too. Super-afro drummer chick is great and his lead player is a genius.

Arbitrator: Satchel_Brown: I'm only familiar with his radio hits. Which album(s) should I start with? Or should I just find a Greatest Hits?

Here's the order I'd use to check them out:

Are You Gonna Go My Way
Circus
Mama Said
Let Love Rule
5 (Don't know much about this one other than singles)
Baptism (again..dunno)
It's Time for a Love Revolution (this is the newest one - I dig the lead off single "Bring it On," but haven't listened to it all)

As you can see, I'm not an expert on his catalog by any means, but I think he has some really good stuff. I dunno what's up with the haters; he's been a pretty solid, honest artist-from what I can tell-that has a kickass support staff on stage. Different strokes, different folks I reckon. :)

theurge14 2008-02-12 03:13:40 AM
His song "Fly Away" won a Grammy.

You know that song. It's the one where he repeats the same sentence for 5 minutes against the backdrop of the same limp guitar riff over and over and over.

I could go on all day.

mtv and vh1 makes me sick to my stomach.

not all mainstream music is bad.

Used to play clubs in LA as Romeo Blue.

Liking "indie" music just because it's not mainstream is just as stupid as heralding things on MtV just because it's on MtV. It doesn't mean it's good stuff, it just means most haven't heard it.

Granted *most* mainstream music is indeed pretty bad but come on don't be so shallow.

Lenny has written a few pretty good tunes. He's not mozart, no but the dude wrote a few good songs at least.

I can't believe so many people are sticking up for Lenny Kravitz! He is impossibly terrible.

Disclosure: Huge fan of indie and Obscure Music For Assholes, but "Are You Gonna Go My Way" is definitely on my computer. Mostly for the delicious riff.

Also, the name Lenny Kravitz sounds like a 60-year-old Jewish lawyer. I'm sure Wikipedia could clear this up for me, but I honestly don't care.

no you got me wrong.

I like what I like because I like it.

if its popular, than so be it.

but none of the shiat I like is popular.

the music I like finds ME.

and if it becomes the flavor of the day, than fine.

but let me tell you.

if I said HAY GUYS I LIKE LENNY KRAVITZ....nobody would care.

if we were in person, talking to each other face to face at some bar, the dude who also knows Malajube and I would be chatting it up.

its very very exciting to meet someone with the same obscure interests.

I don't go out and say "bah! its mainstream, screw it"

its just that everything I like...the movies, the music.....its independant.

That Timbaland song is damn good. I like it.

but its not something I'd buy.

thriller is catchy. and it sounds good. but it doesn't put electricity through my veins like the music I REALLY listen to.

listen/watch (on youtube) to "The Late Great Libido" by Menomena

"True Love Will Find You In The End" by daniel johnston is one of the rawest and most simple songs ever...and it will put a lump in your throat

the stuff on mainstream is garbage. but I don't go out and find stuff that isn't mainstream.

it just happens to be indie.

once you discover other people who like the same music, it doesn't seem so obscure anymore because tons of people out there like Malajube.

its just more exciting to find them than to be listening to Z100 and shaking your ass to TRLs hit of the day.

you know what?

screw it. I AM a pretentious douche, and I'm proud of it.

I don't need to defend myself.

While you're sitting there, chair dancing to Ryianna or whatever going "yeh, boi dis shiat is off da hook, yo!" I am sitting here with Jeffrey Lewi. you never heard or him and just like all the other MTV people, you're thinking "oh, I never heard of him. he must suck, because if he was good, hed be popular. and let's keep it that way.

the music I listen to is farking awesome. and you will never ever ever hear it :D

so, yes. I'm an asshole, don't you know it. but the music I listen to (not all indie has substance....the stuff I own does) is bone-shattteringly good.

I don't need to defend myself. wtf? this is fark.

I'm not a emo kid. or a hipster. I'm just some dude who likes good music.

oh, and let me tell you something.

you go to a concert and go "OMG Lenny smiled at me! that's awesome!"

indie concerts, they sell their own merchandise, and sit there and talk to the fans.

last Microphones show I was at, he and I sat on the couch at the venue before the show, and he was telling me about his vacation is Oslo, Norway.

name a musician you listen to who is that connected to their fans?

yeah, I thought so

/mainstream? I really like Wyclef.

Oh I must have dozed off. You were saying something about listening to obscure bands that your friends are in, and getting all uppity when no one knows who they are. Indie snobs are just as anoying as those who listen to pop music. The music industry needs a cleansing fire.

Derwood there's nothing wrong with listening to some catchy, poppy rock n' roll now and again

Totally agreed, and hipsters who can't admit to a single pop indulgence are completely insufferable.

However, I still gotta hate on Lenny, because he's a symbol of the homogenization of "rock" music. It all sounds the same these days, because it's less offensive, and more pimpable, and therefore ultimately more profitable for record labels. So when I say "the stuff on the radio is all trash," it's not because I'm to good for anything played on that plebeian medium, it's because it all sounds the goddamn same, and I happen to hate that sound. And what it means for music.

/soapbox

This.

Kravitz is not an innovator, but he is a brilliant rock synthesist. The production and instrumentation on his albums is always tastier than f*ck.

Guy really needs to team with a lyricist, though. Some of that shiat is just embarrassing.

Gotta love NeuroticRocker and his rant. Either that was the most effort put into a troll or yes you are an elitist tool. Sure your "indie" groups may hang with their fans, it's easy when only 27 people come out to see you. If they had the following of a mainstream act with 10 000+ at a concert I'm sure that would end instantly.
I pity all those who choose to hate an artist, make of vechicle, OS, or anything else because the majority of the self proclaimed elitist here claim that their standards are the best. Not all radio friendly music sucks. Not all obscure music is good.
It would be interesting to see what all the "snobs" have in their music collections.

kivelo 2008-02-12 10:12:06 AM
Lenny arguably has some talent and has written a few catchy tunes, but the man just oozes douche like few others can. I heard he once held up the MuchMusic Video Awards because he wanted a certain type of cookie. And in every video or public appearance he is all douched up in his rocker poser regalia.

He has no sense of humility or perspective. He is a narcissist completely obsessed with his own "genius, and that always provokes a hate reaction.

My favorite band is so obscure even I haven't heard of them.

Oldie but a goodie.

Cmon, all you indies know that if Clear Channel started playing Hampster Huey and the Gooey Kablooie or whatever obscure emo-indie-jazz-fusion-pop-punk-mambo-ska you listen to, you'd drop them and move on to the next band nobody's heard of. Oh, and from that moment forward you'd biatch endlessly about how their new stuff simply can't hold a candle to the handheld recording you have of them playing a Tom Waits cover set at their junior year high school talent show.

davezog 2008-02-12 10:43:34 AM
NeuroticRocker makes me want to turn in my Hipster Douche TM card. I used to be quite the scenester in my day, but I had a wake-up call last year at an Explosions in the Sky show. When someone starts a fight with me because I'm talking too loud at the bar AT A ROCK SHOW!!! perhaps it's time to hang up my Chuck Taylor's. It was a moment of Hipster Douche TM Nirvana, and my sense of irony, cynicism and elitism transcended all previous levels and I realized everyone, myself included, was an idiot. But I've still seen way more cool shows then you have, and know about way more cool bands than you do, so now I'm torn.
