I noticed they'll either pick a total miss or they'll pick the most obvious choice.

And the award for over-exposed, over-rated, very average band with an annoying lead singer goes to: U2 (Again! ugh! stupid Grammy's)

eyehate: What current music could possibly warrant an award?

I think Rehab deserves the awards it receives because I'm not a pretentious snob that confuses the artist with the art. But that's just me.

Snobbery towards the artist aside...that song sounds like a (only slightly) more annoying version of "The Name Game"

Yech.

No shiat. But then again, the Grammy folks have always sucked Bruce's dick so it's not that surprising.

Face it, Rush will never win one. Never.

Wow, the judges really have their tongues full-length up Amy Winehouse's smelly, drunken, heroin-laced hole, don't they? She's not THAT good.

WonderfulElectric 2008-02-11 08:39:34 AM
Amy Winehouse IS that good. Thus she wins five out of six grammy's.

I really wanted to see Tina Turner start her set last night by yelling "Burn in Hell, Ike!" But I know she was thinking it.

fotodevil 2008-02-11 08:49:56 AM
What is the difference between "Album of the Year" and "Record of the Year"?

/Anyone?

Sybarite [TotalFark] 2008-02-11 08:57:02 AM
* Record of the Year is awarded for a single or for one track from an album. This award goes to the performing artist, the producer, recording engineer, and/or mixer for that song. In this sense, "record" means a recording of one song, not the composition or an album of songs.

* Song of the Year is also awarded for a single or individual track, but the recipient of this award is the songwriter who actually created the song in the first place. Thus, "song" in this context means the song as written, not its recording.

* Album of the Year is awarded for a whole album, and the award is presented to the artist, producer, recording engineer, and mastering engineer for that album. So, in this context, "album" means a recorded collection of songs (a multi-track LP, CD, or download package), not the individual songs or their compositions.

You see, I think drugs have done some good things for us. I really do. And if you don't believe drugs have done good things for us, do me a favor. Go home tonight. Take all your albums, all your tapes and all your CDs and burn them. 'Cause you know what, the musicians that made all that great music that's enhanced your lives throughout the years ... rrreal farking high on drugs. The Beatles were so farking high they let Ringo sing a few tunes.

MiamiBlues 2008-02-11 09:04:40 AM
Since I'm too lazy to look it up,

What do the Grammys have nothing to do with good music, yet seem to be presented as significant awards?

Anyone who has any taste in knows that their nominations suck. As a jazz fan, for example, sorry, but Herbie Hancock is not doing his best work today --- so much better shiat out there. Or rock-- how do the Eagles, Joni Mitchell and Slayer get awards --- there must be at least a 1,000 better acts out there right now than these three, at least in 2007.

So, who chooses these awards? Random people who have trouble with the self-service lane at the Wal-Mart?

amindtat 2008-02-11 09:06:23 AM

Amy Winehouse IS that good. Thus she wins five out of six grammy's.

Yeah, but she's no Herbie Hancock.
Highlight of the night-Vince Gill: "I just got an award given to me by a Beatle. Have you had that happen yet, Kanye?"

dennyd 2008-02-11 09:14:05 AM
What current music could possibly warrant an award?

None. It's all crap.

Amy Winehouse IS that good. Thus she wins five out of six grammy's.

No, it's not. (I can't call it a "she" because that skank can't be human) It won the awards because the record companies said to give the awards to it. This show is so fake it hurts.

galleech 2008-02-11 09:22:21 AM
I don't know much about about soul, but nothing about Amy Winehouse's voice seems spectacular or great. Normally I'd think that I need to be a soul fan to aprreciate it, but I didn't need to be a soul fan to get and like Aretha Franklin.

Go Fast Turn Left: More importantly, yay for Slayer winning a Grammy.

Good for them but as much as I love Slayer I would have sold my soul for King Diamond to win just to see his acceptance speech and the reaction he would have gotten up there. And I think that Machine Head's "Aesthetics Of Hate" was a better song than "Final Six".

barneyfifesbullet 2008-02-11 10:02:17 AM
Of all the albums released last year, Herbie Hancock had the best one? Right.

Actually, it's just a ages old industry trophy show cliche of giving an award to a veteran just to show that the industry recognizes the veterans of that industry. It's all about the industry trying to look good. Hancock's record is a Joni Mitchell tribute and features vocals by industry favorites like Tina Turner and Norah Jones.

Most of the Grammy categories are taken by favorites of the industry voters who get a trophy every time they release something. It's not about quality, it's about who you know, just like most things are.

NiceGuyJeffrey 2008-02-11 10:05:22 AM
It was nice to see Johnny Cash's "God's Gonna Cut You Down" take Best Short Form Music Video. Other than that, I hadn't really heard any of the music on the list.

I thought they lost to Foo Fighters. But I could be wrong.

I'm just looking forward to their polka album next year.

They were interviewed on TVGuide channel, and in addition to telling (again) the story about how Puff Daddy thought Jeff Tweedy was an usher at one of these, they claimed that they were going to try for a new category next year, and release a polka album. Tweedy makes me giggle.

Yet again, an album that i've never heard of [a stupid "tribute" album, no less] wins record of the year over other [presumedly more deserving/great/interesting] one.
In 2000 [or was it 2001?] it was Steely Dan's album, which won over "Kid A" by Radiohead [which i'm STILL shaking my head about].

I'm glad Plant and Krauss won, though.

And of course there's the obligitory Kanye West, Foo Fighters and Springsteen wins.
Ugh.

Their latest album wasn't that good.

Whether it was better than their competition, I can't say, though.

I will be glad when Amy Winehouse finally drops of the face of the planet, ODs or whatever. Sick of hearing her songs and seeing her ugly-ass face all over the place.
Grammys are crap

Of all the rock this year, the best they could come up with is the Foo Fighters and...Springsteen. Springsteen? He made music this year? Dear God, why? I mean, I know this show is faker than the love between a 22 year old bimbo and 80 year old billionaire, but couldn't they at least TRY to not suck so hard?

Did not see it, nor do I see any press on it. Though I know Levon & Robbie would be hard-pressed to get in the same room together.

Jim Dale won for "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows"

Possibly the most deserved award in history, but kind of like giving Mozart a Grammy, not really even close to recognize his real talent. He is the best narrator in history, and "Deathly Hallows" was his masterpiece, Rowling really gave him a perfect canvas.

///Listened to the books instead of reading them, it just felt right for a story like that to be read aloud, just seemed more fitting. A book like "Atlas Shrugged" I read, "Hallows" I listened to. (possibly for the children's books part, but mostly because of Jim Dale)

Agreed, One of the reasons I love that show so much.

//never thought I'd like a narrator more than Paul Harvey, I was Wrong, though Harvey still holds a special place in my heart.
