Foreign suicide bombers determined to kill "not less than 20 or 30 infidels" grew disillusioned because they were kept hanging about and only given small operations. Some gave up and went home.

/Obligatory. (pops)

While this is undoubtedly good news, FTA: These are the words not of al-Qaeda's enemies but of one of its own leaders in Anbar province - once the group's stronghold. They were set down last summer in a 39-page letter seized during a US raid on an al-Qaeda base near Samarra in November.

So hopefully it still holds true.

And Pelosi is a farking moran who deserves to tarred and feathered for her lies on this topic.

NEW, Al Queda, in Iraq...Come on in for All you can eat Falafel Fridays!

don't forget, Jihad Tuesdays! Kill 1 infidel, the second is on us!

... I'd think that the creation of chaos and fear could be interpreted as a success for a terrorist group.

Epsilon [TotalFark] 2008-02-10 11:15:35 PM
It's all for nothing. I hate to be a dooming gloomer, but as soon as we draw down forces they will be back, and Iraq will eventually become another Islamic dictatorship after more civil war. It's a no-win situation for all involved.

There's no doubt in my mind the whole Middle-East was better off when Saddam was in power.

Looks like what they were really saying kicked their ass is the bribing of Sunnis by the US military.

The big problem is still the competing interests of the Sunnis Shiites and Kurds. Who can we bribe to fix that?

sfphinkter 2008-02-10 11:17:23 PM
My understanding is that it isn't the surge... it's that we're paying off the locals.

We probably could have adopted this strategy earlier without deploying more soldiers.

Gyrfalcon [TotalFark] 2008-02-10 11:17:38 PM
Well, it took seven years, trillions of dollars and thousands of lives, but finally, we can say it:

"Payback's a biatch, ain't it!!"

It's weird that people say we're losing in Iraq and then they go on to say that we've killed at least several hundred thousand Iraqis and the Iraqi government is our willing puppet... It's ok to be upset with all the mayhem and death that we're causing but saying we're losing is a sort of strange denial of the numbers...

I cannot wait to hear the conservative backlash on this one.

Yeah--The American Military made some smart moves, and that's good. I don't think anyone, at all, wants more sh*t hitting the fan when we've got soldiers there.

BUT--Why did we go there again? What was the point?

Forgot. The point turned out to be bullshiat. Whoops.

It seems like the American culture are rubbing off on these Sunni ex-insurgents. Just like these American soldiers/mercenaries, there loyalty goes to the highest bidder. Whoever pays them gets their allegiance. I always wondered when the time came when war was waged for industry profits and business. Bush blatantly started the first one, we'll just have to wait and see how many more wars will be waged for the sake of the American dollar.

I was against this debacle from the beginning. With that having been said:

1) It's good to finally see some consistent good news coming from the different sectors (political, military, civilian, etc) of the country. Recovery for Iraq will take a consolidated group effort.

2) All this came about when the U.S. finally got serious about going in there and stopped f*cking around with the Rumsfeld doctrine. Imagine what we could have accomplished if we had done this right from the beginning (using the 300,000+ troops that were recommended rather than trying to do it on the cheap with minimal ground forces).

Linto 2008-02-10 11:25:24 PM
but would they be there in the first place if we weren't?

True. Regardless of an improvement in the situation, it's still a bullshat situation. I pitty the poor soul who inherits this crapola as the next president.

Or (even better) if we had left Iraq completely alone and continued hunting the bastard that ACTUALLY poses a threat to us.

/Just spit-balling here.

i skimmed the article and it seemed more like they (the turrists) either gave up on their own or merely decided to switch teams, before the surge was ever implemented.

then again i'm canadian, so what do i know?

JonnyBGoode 2008-02-10 11:26:57 PM
This is a repeat.

However, since the last thread was from Fox news, and therefore by definition false, this counts as new news.

WFern 2008-02-10 11:27:26 PM
The good: al Qaeda is on the run in Iraq.

The bad: al Qaeda is estimated to compose, at most, 2% our of enemies in Iraq. 98% to go.

The terrible: al Qaeda is experiencing a surge in strength and numbers in both Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Nah... we started paying them off. Once we leave and the paycheck stops going to them... switch sides they will do again.

Inspiration for US to keep spending and spending.

These are the words not of al-Qaeda's enemies but of one of its own leaders in Anbar province - once the group's stronghold. They were set down last summer in a 39-page letter seized during a US raid on an al-Qaeda base near Samarra in November.

Somewhere else in those 39 pages....

The leader in Anbar spoke to his fellow jihadists, "We gotta get them to vote in McCain to keep up the war. Eventually they'll be so broke they'll beg us for mercy". We killed their Freedom. We killed their Liberty. We will kill their prosperity!

/Winning the surge.

Shouldn't have been there in the first place. However I am glad at anything that works which may help our soldiers who got sent over there.

On the "100 more years" thing -- think Japan -- guess what, our folks are still there 53 years later and for how many of those years have the Japanese been loyal pupp-- er, allies of the US?

In summary, while some may be easily swayed by comments taken entirely out of context, don't be fooled. I just want to be clear -- just in case someone is blinkered enough to believe otherwise.

/Seeing trolls in political threads would be more fun if it weren't for the fact that even the wackiest comments might be believed by someone.
