The GOP should send Ron Paul back. I bet they wish they could.

And the Republicans responded by giving Libertarians valium.

There is no room for liberty-minded people in the GOP tent. The party is in disarray, scrambling to prepare for a contest between two of the biggest socialists to run against them in decades

Socialists? You keep saying that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

/John McCain wants to run the entire country off the "cliffs of insanity"
//There is no idear in this universe that cannot be enhanced by using either a quote from the Simpsons or The Princess Bride. S'rsly.

Ahh "socialism". Used by the right to demonize anything that they don't like about the left.

The left loves using money to fund various things for the public (whether it wants/needs them or not)

The right just says words to the contrary, but does the exact same thing, but only for corporations and the military.

I doubt it. Seems more like McCain's nomination would signal the death rattle of the GOP. Let's send a few more wreaths.

My vote will go to Dr. Paul whether he is on the ballot as a Republican or Independent, etc. The media is doing all it can to make supporters of Dr. Paul feel hopeless. It's not going to work. My yard sign went out this morning, my bumper stickers will be on the cars tomorrow, my Ron Paul cards will be in my pocket and my button will be on my outfit every day. I'll talk to as many people as will listen to get the message out.

jeebus. a little overboard?

our condolences to you upon the death of small-government principles within the GOP.

When did the Republicans ever do more than pay lip service to small government? Under Bush? Total joke. Reagan? Don't make me laugh. It's all just talk.

Dude, I know. I just posted that as an allusion to the article yesterday about Obama's "Subtle jab" at McCain's age.

I read this article through, submitted it to Fark.com, and it got the greenlight.

You know, I never understood why Ron Paul and his supporters have been labeled as crazy. He was the darling of teh internets a year ago, and now everyone moved on like so many other internet memes. Where once it was eCool to like Paul, hating on him is now the in thing. Kinda like lolcats.

So, what is so bat shiat insane about Paul's proposed ideas and policies?

Meh, this is nothing more than a publicity stunt. They need to do something to put their name out there and win over the true conservatives. The Libertarian party is the middle child of the political world.

Lets just hope they don't turn emo and experiment with homosexuality as their next attention grabbing move.

As much as the Republicans would like you to believe it, Ron Paul is not a Libertarian.

Small government =/= Libertarian

I don't know how you could be anti-gay marriage and Libertarian at the same time.

If you believe this to be true, why did the LP make him their 1988 presidential candidate?

For the same reason that McCain can run as a Republican and Hillary can run as a Democrat. You don't have to follow the party lines 100% to be a nominee.

Paul has taken tremendous flak inside the LP for some of his stances. Paul is a traditional republican: fiscal conservative, social conservative, non-interventionist foreign policy. The problem is that the Republican party has shifted away from those philosophies. And yes, Reagan was a turning point in that transformation. Zombie Reagan would probably be happy with where they are now.

I don't mind Dr. Paul the candidate however I think some of his proposals, such as a return to the Gold Standard, are nutty. It's his supporters that are a special breed of crazy.

Fart_Machine: such as a return to the Gold Standard, are nutty

Why?

Fart_Machine: It's his supporters that are a special breed of crazy.

Yes. And Paul supporters tend to try to shrug this away saying "all candidates have nutty supporters." While this is true, Paul's are way more vocal.

An economist who believes that economics is a better predictor of behavior than life experience.

The Libertarians at antiwar.com predicted almost the exact outcome of the Iraq war (as we currently understand it), in late 2002, and that's why I've stuck with their analysis ever since it became clear they were right. I'm not saying this makes RP the best man for the Presidency, but it does mean Libertarians have heads for policy. Just because an idea is in the minority doesn't make it wrong.

The occupation phase of the Iraq War is the ultimate exercise of laissez-faire capitalism, so it follows that Libertarians would understand it well.

Where Libertarian policy falls down is that they assume that humans will always behave rationally when given the freedom to behave in any way they choose, and that business has the best interests of society in mind by default since business drives the economy and the economy drives society. Libertarians completely neglect the human factors of modern life in favor of cold analysis. It's a very corporate approach to politics that appeals to a certain kind of person who was raised in a household where the company daddy worked for was admired more than daddy himself, because after all, daddy was just a cog in the machine.

You're taking the "gold standard" too literally. The idea includes all precious metals. Do you really want to discuss the economics of how precious metals can be used to back currency? I can give you a reading list beforehand.

I remember when I thought Libertarians were nuts, but that was back when I was a liberal socialist in college.

"What do you mean, LITTLE government?"

The idea was so nutty to me... but eventually I decided that the only true 'fair' and free society is one where everyone is allowed to do what they wish provided they don't infringe on the rights of others.

//yea yea, corporations, blah blah, rich people, yada yada.
///suck it leftists.

Also, considering... we had traces of a Gold standard still in use up to the early 1970's.

That works fine as long as you've convinced yourself that two labels accurately represent the entire spectrum of American political ideology.

As opposed to the logic, reason, and good constitutional stewardship we have with the two major parties?
