That was interesting to see. I didn't expect him to be so lighthearted right before they went on air.

What a creepy guy.

Very interesting to see, but what's with the Amusing tag? I was expecting him to be making off colour jokes or offensive references to the people on his enemies list.

What I came to say. At least he was classy on the way out.

He was probably drunk.

Rich-Hobo 2008-02-10 06:46:54 PM
I was hoping he would say something like "SCREW YOU HIPPIES!!!" or
"FARK ALL COMMIES!!!!!!"

Couldn't stand the guy, but he had his charms. Played the piano. . .

What a creepy guy

Agreed. He was genuinely ill at ease with the press in the main I guess wot you saw there was just a bit of nervous tension. He already knew that Ford was gonna pardon him so he really didn't have too many worries that day. The "you wouldn't print that would ya Ollie?" in reference to a potential shot of Nixon picking his nose does remind one that the overly cozy relationship between the MSM and Big Gov has devolved significantly from those heady days.

White House memorabilia....

That was, pretty much his downfall.

This has NOTHING to do with how Obama is better than Billary, other than it has to do with a President and all that.

An evil, menacing paranoiac like Nixon (or Kennedy, or Eisenhower) would be a breath of fresh air compared ot the incompetent buffoons that have been president since then.

OTA BENGA 2008-02-10 06:55:19 PM
The Presidency is a bit of a lark. Everyone's always kidding around, but they know how to switch to faux-serious mode when the nation needs addressing.

Just look at Bill Clinton when he's making a serious speech and you know 5 minutes before he was getting a blowjob. I don't want to see those outtakes.

unkotabete 2008-02-10 06:58:28 PM
Could be one of the greatest Presidents ever (uh-oh, here comes the flames...)

Seriously. Check the record. I mean his accomplishments, both foreign and domestic. And don't knee-jerk--many Democrats are stunned when they actually see what Nixon did domestically. Amazing stuff that most Republicans today couldn't get away with in a million years. Look it up before you go all "Watergate this Watergate that" in commenting.

When you consider the current crop of candidates vs. Nixon, Humphrey, McCarthy, Kennedy, etc, from 1968 ....jeez, where we've been vs. where we are now. Give me any of those guys over Clinton McCain Obama Huckabee...

And creepy? I dunno. Compared to Clinton macking on 19 year old interns?

As a card carrying liberal I hate to say this, but I have some respect for anyone who takes that job, even B--- oh crap, I can't say it.

Nixon was a quite a piece of work. Arrogance and hubris...PBS has a little movie called "Watergate plus 30, Shadow of History". Good watch, interesting to listen how opinions have changed 30 years later. What's even more compelling are some of the conversations that had with his advisers. There is something like 2000+ hours of tape recorded conversations and listening to some of his conversations kind of gives you the idea he was more than just creepy.

simpsonfan 2008-02-10 07:02:20 PM
At least he didn't say he was outlawing Russia, and was going to begin bombing.

Probably the best Nixon speech was one he didn't have to use was in 1969. They had one prepared in the event the Apollo 11 mission had failed. Which means even Nixon wasn't told about the NASA conspiracy to fake the whole thing.

signaljammer 2008-02-10 07:02:31 PM
Nixon started EPA, that was cool, I guess. The opening to China caused much dislocation in the USA. Ramped up the drug war, that wasn't cool. . .

Aeonic_Blue 2008-02-10 07:02:38 PM
I'm a super-douchebag liberal, but I actually kinda respect Nixon, cept for the whole 'breaking into the DNC' shiat. I like him oodles more than I like Reagan, that's for sure.

Christian Bale 2008-02-10 07:02:56 PM
He was at ease because it was over, all the pressure was off--he was about to resign. Like they say about people who commit suicide, once they jump all their burden is gone, and they feel great, and then they want to live. Then they splat but some survive and they tell the tale. Anyway I digress.

What ya gotta understand about the Watergate break-in is that it was to reconnoiter whether the Dems had good dirt on a bunch of other scandals, such as ITT and milk fund. He had pretty much hoisted himself over his own petard.

jmr61 2008-02-10 07:07:15 PM
Too bad he didn't of himself in 1960.

No, that just means they went to extra lengths to make it appear real. If they actually went there do you think they'd reveal they had doubts about the success of the project?

I was expecting some goofy dubbed-in stuff. I am glad I was mistaken. Cool to see his nervous laughter. Good stuff, subster.

Boy, do I remember THAT day.....

I was relieved of my duties at my part-time job, a real tragedy for a 16 year old kid who wanted a car. Yep, Ol' Dick and I were bounced on the same day!

It's funny how Nixon is now universally resigned for attempting to wiretap ONE office in Washington, when the current President has (after no doubt wiretapping thousands of offices secretly) revendicated the right to wiretap everyone and anyone for whatever reasons (which must be kept secret because of national security, I'm sure you understand).

In 2004 John Dean wrote a book about Bush & Cheney called "Worst than Watergate". As accusatory as the book was, we've since found out that Dean didn't even know half of the evil, paranoid shiat that's really been going on in this Administration.

signaljammer 2008-02-10 07:24:52 PM
The break-in @ Daniel Ellsberg's psychiatrist's office wasn't very nice. Sicing the IRS on his rhetorical opponents wasn't very fair.

McManus_brothers [TotalFark] 2008-02-10 07:24:53 PM
Nixon could've been one of the greatest Presidents in recent memory, if he weren't a paranoid asshole. At least he had China. Bush has got nothing going for him.

Yeah, ok, I wasn't really digressing at all. But a few more tangents and whew! I woulda been on Mars.

His sub-rosa attempts to imply McGovern was a sissy were beyond the pale, though perhaps not criminal.

Nixon, as a person, was actually pretty affable and was well-liked by his friends. How bad could a guy be who had a bowling alley installed in the white house?

I firmly contend that the only problem with Nixon was that he was the one president that got caught doing the shiat he did. everyone before and everyone after him was just a little better at hiding it.

signaljammer 2008-02-10 07:34:48 PM
Also, with the taped evidence of the cover-up, we have direct evidence that he knew what he did was wrong, and that he had committed a string of felonies in attempting to inhibit the special prosecutor.

Catsmeow 2008-02-10 07:35:11 PM
My first political memory was of my elementary school principal announcing President Nixon's resignation.

I've read his memoirs. He wasn't Jimmy Carter good, but he wasn't Hillary evil.

signaljammer 2008-02-10 07:37:08 PM
Nixon's wife defacto quit him early on. He was not popular with everyone.

Is "revendicated" a real word?

Do you know many people who are disliked by their friends?

Maybe I'm just an a-hole but generally if I dislike someone they aren't my friend.
As far as the bowling alley goes well we all know who else had a bowling alley in their house....
