Boulder is 26sq miles surrounded by reality - just ask anyone in Denver.

Those 'smartest city' polls always seem to define 'city' as 'something bigger than Los Alamos'.

Back in the day it was easily the most stoned city in the US.

They're all small college towns, hence the huge proportion of people with university degrees.

Boulder just wants to be Austin so very badly.

If any city warrants its own tag its Boulder.

Yeah, but my point was that Los Alamos has a phenomenally large percentage of PhD.s, but it never makes these lists because it's too small.

SilentStrider [TotalFark] 2008-02-10 04:39:26 PM
If you're going by asking the people who live there, i would have thought Chicago would have topped the list.

The Shoveller [TotalFark] 2008-02-10 06:59:18 PM
Maybe the 25 and over population around here is extremely 'smart', but the 24 and under population are heavily skewed towards 'functionally retarded'. There are plenty of exceptions (like all the young Boulder TFers), but this place earns its reputation as a haven for the worst kind of yuppies.

Just out of curiosity, can anyone direct me to national education averages? The stats they throw out for Boulder don't really mean much unless you have something for comparison.

Boulder Colorado is the smartest most educated city in the US

Fixed that for ya. You have to define your parameters with something like this.

fanbladesaresharp 2008-02-10 07:38:17 PM
I've always heard that the truly smart people avoid Boulder like the plage unless you're gassing up on the way to somewhere else.

There is definitely a green vibe there, but all the SUV's and Subaru's trolling the big box store parking lots kinda offset's it.

Los Alamos is an order of magnitude smaller than Boulder. That's where the whole city part of smartest city comes in.

namegoeshere 2008-02-10 07:44:10 PM
Couldn't it be said that the cost of living/housing is high enough there that it draws a more financially secure population, and that a greater percentage of said population are able to access secondary education?

Boulder has the highest percentage of people with Ph.D.s, which most decidedly means that it's not the smartest city.

Farking rookie. New York City uses you to line their cat's litter boxes. And Denver takes pics.

Up here in Longmont, the residents are all scared of what they call "Boulderization", which I presume means:

Houses actually worth a shiat
People with GEDs not getting chided for all that 'book learnin',
A shopping area that you can actually walk through
A mall where you won't get shot

Fabric_Man: Fixed that for ya. You have to define your parameters with something like this.

Indeed. I regularly interview software design geeks. I regularly see candidates fresh out of school with double masters who can't write ten lines of code in the language of their choice and who can't verbally answer a rough data structure design problem. Seriously, it amazes the hell out of me sometimes.

Lived in Boulder, now living in Denver.

Boulder is great, a bit at a time. Living there is insane- Socially I'm pretty liberal, but I've never seen so many over-the-top-with-political-correctness nutjobs in one place anywhere else. Just thousands of rich people wandering around in sandals searching high and low for things to be offended by.

Oh, and they all have a "cause," they're fighting for, regardless of whether or not they actually understand said cause.

Still a great place to go on the weekend, though!

This. Boulder is fine. It's just like any other college town with a location beautiful enough to drive property values way up, thus causing a strong influx of yuppies (who aren't bad, by the way; they're just people with a bunch of money). Don't like it? Move about 15 minutes northwest to Longtucky.
