Not that I can really blame him for trying, but seriously, fark you Dick Cheney. Information must be free and open - especially when that information is court testimony involving the government suppression of constitutionally guaranteed rights.

In a motion filed Saturday, Cheney's office contended that the videotapes could be used to invade the privacy and embarrass two aides called to testify about the encounter in a civil lawsuit.

Sorry Dick, but that there is what we call 'public domain'. And you don't get to slap a classified sticker on information just because it might make you look bad. Nope, sorry dude - but you live in a Republic (well, nominally anyways) and that means that the unwashed masses get to make crude and rude comments about ya when you screw up.

Suck it up nancy boy. i'm sure you'll get over it.

They're fkn aides to Dick Cheney. These people are incapable of embarrassment.

But we've got to shield the likes of Cheney and Bush from any dissenting opinions.

They are delicate after all.

well, I think he's right about this. Imagine how embarrassed those people will be when everyone finds out that they are aides to Dick Cheney...

What's the worst he can do to stop the release? Shoot people in he face with a shotgun?

Oh wait that's been done

on jan 30th this year, i kept trying to get a thread greenlit, but the mods of fark are fickle beings...

jan 30th is the day that Hitler took power 75 years ago this year and also it was Dick Cheney's 67th bday.

one thing i love about this administration is that they make no pretense about caring what the public thinks, or what the law might happen to be, or anything that else that could get in the way.

It would have been good for a "this day in Antichrist history" kind of headline.

okay i'll say it. i lawled at the headline.

The only reason Barf Daeder objects, is that it will open them ( VEEP's office) up for prosecution or a civil suit.

Dorf11 2008-02-10 04:45:02 PM
Cheney's office said if tapes are released, they should be limited "to the witnesses' demonstrations of plaintiff's physical contact with the vice president, with video redaction that completely and irreversibly obscures the witnesses' facial features."

A digital shotgun, so to speak.

As I read the article, this is a civil suit (guy was arrested for walking up to Cheney and making a small scene). Arguably the secret service shouldn't have had him arrested, but just as arguably the guy is doing everything he can to embarrass him.

The testimony is public domain, Cheney's not trying to block the transcript or suppress anyone's rights. But your childish name calling illustrates Cheney's point; he's concerned that people will edit it and misrepresent what was said.

It seems that the only people left in this country that are allowed to have privacy is this administration. So many secrets.

lajimi It seems that the only people left in this country that are allowed to have privacy is this administration.

I really hate to use the "but Clinton" response, but wasn't this exactly the same argument that was used against releasing the video describing the cigar incident?

Ikimasen 2008-02-10 05:29:38 PM
So few posts, I don't believe it. tomhath, I see what you're saying, that since a written form of the depositions will become available then nothing is being 'hidden,' but I don't agree that that makes it fair to keep the videos under wraps. So what if embarrassing videos might be cut together? The first amendment doesn't say 'Congress shall pass no laws limiting the freedom of speech unless someone might be embarrassed by that speech.' This is an attempt to limit expression through film and that's a dangerous precedent to have set.

What a farking pussy that Cheney is.

ColTomParker 2008-02-10 05:59:18 PM
even if it is just the transcripts, how long until we see videos of legos acting them out? Weaver95 put it perfectly.
I like to drive past the Vice President's place and quote one of his most famous phrases heard on the floor of the U.S. Senate.

If they've got nothing to hide, they've got nothing to worry about.

They could both be embarrassed? Is Cheney's office stipulating that they were both lying?

Isn't making government officials "look boorish, mendacious, or unintelligent" a valid exercise of First Amendment Political Speech, and thus a higher duty to protect?

I can't think of anything that would merit a higher duty to protect than that. "Cause these bozos deserve all that and more!

rbuzby 2008-02-10 06:37:46 PM
The argument put forth by Cheney amounts to him saying "the tapes should not be released because people would see them."

iaazathot 2008-02-10 06:58:26 PM
Does this actually surprise anyone? The only way it seems to make sure DC isn't lying and committing crimes against the US people is if he stops breathing. So far, the vat of green goo and his respirator plate keep that from happening.

And now he is running for president.

Darn you, Yogimus, you sent me hunting for that bill and I found the poorly written articles of a member of the Gateway Christian Coalition. Ideology aside, the articles were really very badly written, and it hurt me. On the inside.

Since he has only ever brought death, lies, debt and oppression to people...one might think that he could at least allow us this opportunity of humor...

I mean come on...the hunting accident was a self inflicted wound.
