it BETTER be - i didn't pay all that money for some non-radioactive crap.

Okay, before I open the article to read it, I predict that someone has found out that uranium has a strong affinity for phosphates and is working that angle into a career...

Oh, and it goes on to the anti-fluoridation people.

Welcome to crazy town people.

If it is, I better have a talk with the farmer next door.

Correct, sir.

I know what the article is referring to without having to read it because I was having a discussion about the radioactive isotopes in some fertilizers..in 1993. So maybe we'll forgive them for noticing about 15 years too farkin' late.

/or not

The active ingredient in Pepto-Bismol is Bismuth, the first radioactive element on the periodic table. EVERYBODY PANIC!

From Article: Now hear this: I'm coming at this from the garden angle. I do not have the expertise to pronounce on safety with respect to radiation dosages. But I am a qualified, experienced worrywart.

Yup, that about sums it up. Glad to see the media's investigative reporting is still up to par.

Balzac Onyerchin [TotalFark] 2008-02-10 10:50:03 AM
Article was vague. Were they refering to polonium 210 in apatite based fertilizers? No idea why they kept mentioning uranuim (unless it is better for the scare factor).

Why do I get the thought of some asshat in Montana trying to build a dirty bomb with fertilizer? Also does this mean Timothey McVey used a Radiological Weapon against the US Government?

Sorry. I read that as "my farts are not radioactive." Then I thought, "well, good for you."

ha ha, well i'm not into that kind of farming (see profile), although i always said if i were to get into it i could retire in a few years.

Radiation is everywhere. There's 100x more unwarranted fear about it than there is real danger in the world.

Bananas are radioactive. The potassium throws off a reading so bad that you can't eat them leading up to a personal radiation reading.

Sometimes I wonder if all this radiation hype wasn't just a campaign to keep nuclear energy unpopular. If people weren't so afraid of it, more people would promote nuclear power and energy wouldn't remain in the hands of the few.

There is so much nuculer shiat in fertilizer, it will turn us all into mutants sooner or later. You are lucky if your kids aren't born with two heads, or a third arm growing out of their back.

Potassium Chloride. Simple matter of changing a rung on the periodic table to get a similar taste.

I think it's potassium chloride...it is a salt, just not common table salt.

This, oh, this. But he's already stretching his ties with OMG FLUORIDE IN OUR PRECIOUS BODILY FLUIDS dot org, by diverting scarce panic resources away from fluoridation and toward natural trace radioactivity.

That site was amazing, I wonder if it exists in torrent form, I would love to have it to read.

the only thing I've seen since its been down was most of the faq section which was recovered through google cache, and maybe one site had some pictures to go with it.

There are some stories that came out of Los Alamos that the radiation fear was intended to keep people in other countries from playing with the stuff.

And to people saying there fertilizer isn't radioactive... get a giger counter and show me your stable isotopes. 1/5 off all potassium is radioactive for a start. That includes the stuff in your fertilizer, bananas, vitamins, steak and potatoes.

This entire article pisses me off on many levels. First, it's clear that the editor let a poorly, or not, researched article get published. Second, the paper advertises that their author has a Ph.D. in botany, and from a decent school at that. This guy should have the science training to easily figure out if his concern has any merit. Furthermore, the Ph.D. implies that even if he lacks that training, he should be able to research it and teach it to himself. And to round things off, though this overlaps with the lack of research, there isn't a single farking number available letting me know if the fertilizer is even radioactive or not. Put a damned Geiger counter next to it already, and take a farking measurement! It took me all of 2 minutes to learn how to turn on a Geiger counter, take a quick background reading, and start measuring samples in my radioactive chemistry course.

Remember when you went to read a column on gardening and they would actually give you useful hints?

Now some overeducated yankee cocksucker who has impressed some bean counting editor with his education gets to annoy everyone with some gloom and doom nonsense. Meanwhile the people whom actually know a thing or too about gardening in Florida are not passing on their knowledge.

And at the end of it, he gives no alternatives. Use dried manures instead of nitrate of soda, jackass. Now go back to bragging about your phd to your community college students and STFU.

StrikitRich 2008-02-10 01:14:41 PM
Your body is radioactive and should qualify as radioactive waste, as well.

Worried?

40-K is 0.0117% abundant, not 20%.
