Yes, Ms. Gates. Brilliant -- that's exactly how to get your son away from his twisted thoughts and turn him into a well-adjusted young adult.

submitter: Teens family claims it is perfectly normal to create a secret encrypted language and use it to lay out an elaborate plan to kill multiple classmates.

I RdTFA. Is there any evidence that he actually intended to do anything?

I only ask because I plotted elaborate schemes to kill my classmates, teachers, administration, etc. all the time. My imagination swung that way probably because I grew up watching horror movies and reading Stephen King.

Guess how many people I harmed. Guess how many of my plans I actually attempted to start implementing. Guess how many violent confrontations I've had in real life.

If you answer is anything greater than zero, then you guessed wrong.

Am I the only person in the world that turned out to be a well-adjusted member of society even with all of that? Or is there a chance this kid is "normal"?

/would be shocked if I were the only one here who ever plotted the mass murders of many people at school

Also TFA: ...he was influenced by "Naruto" a Japanese cartoon whose main character is described as an "unpredictable adolescent ninja who constantly searches for recognition".

Yeah, that's just great. Never seen the show, but somehow it doesn't surprise me that the media is trying to connect a Japanese TV show -- a stone's throw from video games in most adult minds -- to some kid going nuts.

You know, it's funny. It seems like the people who do actually end up shooting people up are the ones who have the worst plans, at least if you go by body count. The way I see it, though, is that the kind of mind that would actually go postal like that is not the kind of mind that would rationally go through a plan, looking for flaws and ways in which to improve it...

I'd say that this is more of a "post Columbine" world. There is are real-life reasons to be concerned here, no the phony paranoid "war on terra" that 9/11 spawned

A few obvious questions, though....

Was this kid every bullied?
Was he picked last for any sport teams?
Did a teacher or any of the students single him out and make fun of him?
Is he a bit of a loner?
Had he been turned down by a girl?

Answer three or more of these with "yes" and I'd think the authorities do have a case. (look at the other school shooting incidents)

shiat I am glad I got out of school before the current insanity hit. I could see a teacher freaking over kinetic impact calculations deltaV calculations, blast radius calculations. Also had elaborate plans to kill random people... mostly involving lasers. I never acted on them, it just made me feel better about how horribly I was treated by fellow students. I also built some small explosives and gave them to friends. We mostly blew up small plastic toys -- Though one friend took apart one of the bombs and stuck a match in it while looking down the casing.

/He lost his eyelashes, eyebrows, hair on the top of his head and his face was beet red for a week

If your little snowflake is on this list it could mean they are a total asshat and you should do something about that. I have to agree that I am glad to be out of school before the paranoid nutjobs took control. Back in my day if our classmates were id10ts we pounded the stupid right out of them, either verbally or physically. Of course parents back then had the attitude that if you acted ignorant you generally deserved what you got, and then they also nailed your arse for acting stupid.

While killing a person for this is out of line, I think a severe beating could sometimes be in order. Not long ago, I would have considered a beating out of line for such an offense, but I recently waited behind 6 people who made me reconsider. Honestly, it was just FAIL after FAIL after FAIL. It actually makes me angry to think about it, and I'm not one to easily get upset. I just can't imagine how any of those people made it that far in life.

Um, come on, every teenage boy has fantasised about some dark shiat. I know I sure did, maybe I was a bit (a lot) more dark than most but everyone's done it. Christ we're a bunch of pussies these days.

There are other ways to tell if a kid's going to snap and do something nasty, but usually, and here's the real problem, the kids who do go postal aren't having attention paid to them by the people who should be. And I don't mean "My wonderful little snowflake" kind of attention, I mean the vigilance of good parenting.

Also, we need to learn the difference between "wanting to kill someone" and "fantasising about killing someone". You don't want to kill the person in the fast food line, course you don't, you're not a sociopath. Fantasising is a different thing altogether, and it's quite possible that indulging in a little internal fantasy actually keeps one from wanting to do it in reality. It allows us to analyse the situation and realise quietly in the background that it would be quite distasteful. Get rid of the fantasy and you may have problems.

It's no coincidence that an awful lot of sociopaths come from repressive backgrounds, where having certain thoughts would be treated as being "wrong".

Anyway, I'm being far too sensible. Kid should DIAF or something. Raarr, rabble rabble etc.

Since the school administrators couldn't decipher the letter, which I think says a lot about public schools. I would expect at least one person on staff at the school does the Newspapers crypto- puzzle, on the public's dime no less.

Seriously. It should not take you several minutes to order from the drive-thru. The menu is not that complicated and once you pull up to the second menu (the one with the intercom) you should already have your order in mind. I'm not ever going to actually hurt someone over this, but there have been plenty of times where I've experienced "drive-thru rage" because of retards who take foreeeever to order.

I didn't have access to pot, nor beer, and I wasn't about to get laid due to being a non-athletic geek. So I designed and built guns and explosives. Many of them worked really rather well.

Is this post-Columbine knee-jerk reactions or a real cause for alarm?

I taught in a school where a kid held a class hostage. He admitted to getting the idea from reading "Rage" by Stephen King. For four hours he held a teacher and 21 students at gunpoint before the teacher finally talked him into relinquishing the gun.

He had made threats in the past about killing students. Even had a floorplan of the school & a couple of teachers' schedules in his locker. They were found weeks before the incident and nothing was done.

However, this happened in 1989 and never made it to the mainstream media. In fact, it was barely a blip in the local paper. The point I'm trying to make is that this stuff has always happened. It's just that now every minute detail gets reported & blown out of proportion. Post-Columbine or not, you've got a kid making some serious death threats and should be investigated. I don't believe criminal charges should be brought (THAT part's post-Columbine), but he definitely needs counseling.

Get over yourself, Francis. If you're not standing right there keeping an eye on your shiat, it's getting yanked out of the microwave. If I'm ordering food for 10 coworkers, it's probably going to take more than 15 minutes. I'm not even going to touch the pretty girl at the bar comment, but let's just say you're probably a good toss away from Ed Gein and leave it at that, huh?
