They fueled a mind and a mouth that never stopped running, delivering the kind of straight talk people liked so much when he ran for president eight years ago. It helped rescue his campaign from near-collapse last summer. It revived his chances of becoming the Republican nominee.

Now, on the verge of doing just that, McCain is trying to figure out how to keep being John McCain.

Stop being so mean to McCain!

/nowhere did you mention that you wanted to kiss him all over and make sweet, sweet love to him.
//seriously, is press objectivity completely missing? Is McCain spending his money on infomercials like this?

I'm thinking of a Chris Rock joke about "keeping it real", but the filter would mess it all up.

Mac, mac, baby!

Why is McCain's campaign theme 'straight talk'? He can't even answer a damn question without resorting to convoluted, vague answers and name-dropping. I fail to see how people can support the "I Know Jack Kemp!" express.

McCain tried keeping it real. It didn't work. He called the religious right "agents of intolerance" then he went on to pander to them. He rightfully despised Bush for beating him in 2000 using a by now infamous pull poll that made his adopted daughter seem like the love child of McCain and a black prostitute, then he went on to give Bush a big ole bear hug. Realising he couldn't pull off a "double gitmo" like Mitt did in the debates and also recognising the sound of crickets from the rethug audience whenever he tried saying that America shouldn't torture he doubled Bush's estimate of fifty years in Iraq to a hundred. He also backed down on the torture legislation and had all it's teeth removed.

After all this flip flopping, pandering and disingenuousness this sad excuse for an AP reporter tries to spin it like McCain is actually a straight talker? WTF?! This reporter is either a paid shill or is in the eighth grade. Possibly both.

My favorite McCain flip flop? He was asked about the possibility of the Dems taking back the Senate in '06 and sed "I think I'd just commit suicide."

Still waiting on that one.

His ability to go from "Fark you! I know more about this than anyone else in the room." on Immigration to "I'm going to be honest: I know a lot less about economics than I do about military and foreign policy issues. I still need to be educated." shows both his arrogance and his ignorance.

If McCain really wanted to keep it real he'd repaint his bus with the motto "The Curveball Weasel Talk Flip Flop Express"

I look at John McCain like he's Principal Skinner having a 'Nam flashback only older and waaaay crazier.

MFL, that's hilarious.

To answer the question honestly though his bus is called the"Straight Talk Express" cause its a holdover from his 2000 campaign when he was the maverick outsider who actually was telling it like it really was. cause he had little to lose. So the bus was already painted and changing the name wouldve left pundits with a perfect story opening about how he apparently left his old candor on the bus.

You marched into the Baghdad square
Like you were shooing kids off your lawn
Your troops strategically deployed there
Your flak jacket for the bombs
You had one eye on the push polls
As you watched your ratings drop
And all the pols dreamed that they'd be your partner
They'd be your partner

You're McCain
You probably think this song is about you
You're McCain
I'll bet you think this song is about you
Don't you? Don't you?
