So, dude gets suspended for saying she's being pimped but it's been ok for mainstream press to call Obama a magic negro?

/WTF?

RoyBatty 2008-02-09 01:02:06 AM
Nice troll right in the misleading headline subby.

I_Approve_Of_This_Message 2008-02-09 01:04:18 AM
So the Clintons are going to boycott MSNBC? Awesome.

WorldCitizen [TotalFark] 2008-02-09 01:05:06 AM
If she's playing an active role in the political campaign, which she is, then she is fair game for evaluation and comment. It was a bad choice of words, but the point he was trying to make is a valid thing to discuss.

Hoopy Frood 2008-02-09 01:08:04 AM
What, it's not Alan Keyes?

RadioAaron 2008-02-09 01:08:28 AM
Meh... I didn't think it was that bad of a comment.

Louder And More Dissonant 2008-02-09 01:12:42 AM
The remark was:

"Doesn't it seem as if Chelsea is sort of being pimped out in some weird sort of way?"

I'd agree that's a little crass and inarticulate - but how else would one phrase that question? I couldn't quickly come up with anything...

SphericalTime [TotalFark] 2008-02-09 01:12:43 AM
It might have been a valid point, but it's still note acceptable to imply that a presidential candidate's daughter is a prostitute.

Of course, I don't think it was a valid point, considering that nothing was said about Bush's daughters campaigning for him.

They were right to suspend him, if he can't come up with better phrasing on the air than that.

Wombatzu 2008-02-09 01:14:51 AM
it was a dumbass thing to say, but the Clintons have jumped on it and will play with it as long as possible. nothing appeals more to Hillary's main demographic than being able to be righteously angry at an evil male in a position of power.

Occam's Chainsaw [TotalFark] 2008-02-09 01:15:57 AM
Poor word choice... but not by much.

/What, you would prefer we call a spade "that other non-red suit"?

How about, "Does anyone else think that it is inappropriate for Chelsea Clinton to be campaigning for her mother?"

Answer from panel: "No."

Seems to cover the same terrain without implying anything untoward.

Doesn't it seem as if Chelsea is sort of being exploited?

Wombatzu 2008-02-09 01:21:39 AM
i hate the Clinton's as much as anyone but i don't see how Chelsea working for them is any different than Romney's sons or Edwards' wife or whatever...

the Clintons have crossed the line in using an ex-President as a political shill... if there is a whore and a pimp, then Bill and Hillary take turns.

Louder And More Dissonant 2008-02-09 01:24:01 AM
SphericalTime: Seems to cover the same terrain without implying anything untoward.

I'll agree there, but I think that changes what was being asked.

The implication I lost between the first one and the second is that there could have been some impropriety about the situations the campaign was putting Chelsea into, places where one wouldn't ordinarily send a daughter.

Was the original host trying to imply that?

Are they selling tickets for rich men to have sex with her? Are they forcing her to work in a brothel or something? What place has the Clinton Campaign put Chelsea into that presidential candidates wouldn't normally send a daughter too?

I mean, as I said, Bush's daughters campaigned for him. Mary Cheney ran her dad's campaign. Heck, I'll bet that John Adams made John Q. part of his campaign somehow.

Somewhere a suspended correspondent is reading this thread and kicking his own ass.

Hector Remarkable 2008-02-09 01:30:41 AM
So, you're saying Shuster didn't ever use the words "skank-ass ho" describing Chelsea Clinton, and did not once state that he wanted to "ride her like a Republican"?

SphericalTime [TotalFark] 2008-02-09 01:34:52 AM
You know, that publicity photo of Dan Schuster makes him look really hot.

Not that that forgives what he did, but still.

SphericalTime [TotalFark] 2008-02-09 01:39:02 AM
Darius Harris: His mistake was going after a democrat's daughter. That sort of thing simply isn't allowed on MSNBC. He just picked the wrong political party to make an off-color remark on, that's all.

MSNBC once apologized for allowing a segment criticizing a Republican's Senator's wife to air. There's a big difference between MSNBC and Fox News there, dude.

Good.
I hope that in relatiation, the Clintons boycott every network in the country. And the papers too.
And the Intertubes!
And ..., oh fark, I don't know.
I'm drunk in Mexico City, what the fark...

I'd pimp it.

Ya know, when you're running for President, it's probably not a good strategy to boycott entire networks.

How is it exploitation when a 27 year old adult chooses to participate in her mother's campaign?

If she was 6 and they were dressing her in cute little outfits, that would be one thing. She's 27. Saying she's being exploited is totally idiotic.

Louder And More Dissonant 2008-02-09 02:35:00 AM
Genevieve Marie: How is it exploitation when a 27 year old adult chooses to participate in her mother's campaign?

Well, the answer to that question may very well be "she isn't" - but at least the question is better stated.

Delawheredad 2008-02-09 02:37:28 AM
Poor choice of words. But nobody really cares if a candidates kids campaign for them. That said, Webb Hubble's daughter does make herself a bit of a target by not even talking to reporters. She turned down the kid who writes for the Weekly Reader for heaven's sake! When you do things like that the press will turn on you.

Wardrobe_Malfunction 2008-02-09 02:51:41 AM
So "pimped out" is enough to get you suspended from the air now? What's next, "gosh darn?"

The Clintons made Chelsea off-limits to the media her whole life, but then trotted out their precious snowflake when the focus groups showed she'd be beneficial to Hillary's campaign. But boo hoo, you can't say anything bad about her or Hill won't come on your channel and do her debate? Wow.

The implication that getting political support from your family is somehow untoward is... well, a little disturbing. I think this guy needs a nice, long, quiet think to re-evaluate his priorities. Unemployment is an extreme way to obtain that, but I guess it works.

//I'd go so far as to say that not receiveing political support from your family means it's time to step back and re-evaluate. Even the Clintons aren't that bad.

Genevieve Marie [TotalFark] 2008-02-09 02:57:07 AM
Wardrobe_Malfunction: The Clintons made Chelsea off-limits to the media her whole life

Because she was a child. And you don't mess up a child's life by submitting them to media scrutiny. They did the right thing for her when she was young and they kept the media away when she was a college student trying to enjoy college like a normal person. But now she's 27, out of school, and an adult. It's her choice to speak, she's not being dragged out to photo ops. I think that it would be fairly obvious that exposing her to the media then as opposed to now are completely different.

Daedalus27 2008-02-09 03:15:40 AM
Clinton can go ahead and boycott MSNBC. She will join the rest of america that refuses to tune in on a daily basis.

Wardrobe_Malfunction 2008-02-09 03:16:18 AM
Genevieve that's my point...so why is she still off limits? Hey, if she's going to get involved in politics and campaigning I hope she understands sh's going to be the target of a lot worse criticism than that.

Genevieve Marie [TotalFark] 2008-02-09 03:24:22 AM
Wardrobe_Malfunction: Genevieve that's my point...so why is she still off limits? Hey, if she's going to get involved in politics and campaigning I hope she understands sh's going to be the target of a lot worse criticism than that.

It was a criticism of Chelsea, it was a criticism of her parents based on her campaign participation, and it's a criticism that hasn't been applied to the Bush family or any other family whose adult children campaign for them. The way it was phrased was totally inappropriate. It's an example of new versus not news.

News: Huckabee's son tried to get on a plane with a gun and was detained.

Not News: Chelsea Clinton has made a few speeches for her mom's campaign.

If Chelsea does something worth criticizing, criticize it. But just for participating? Ludicrous.

Genevieve Marie [TotalFark] 2008-02-09 03:25:09 AM
*** Wasn't a criticism of chelsea, was of her parents.

silly typos

Argh2 2008-02-09 03:32:41 AM
Well, it's not nearly as bad as when Romney was pimping out his sons. Of course, they worked as a team, which was really special.

Then again, when Cheney was pimping out his lesbian daughter, that was pretty impressive, too.

Redwing [TotalFark] 2008-02-09 03:42:40 AM
But whose ass will Olbermann kiss if they do boycott???

I'd stump it

VictoryCabal [TotalFark] 2008-02-09 08:21:59 AM
Someone on TPM summed it up pretty well. Chris Matthews has had some kind of sick obsession with Clinton for years. He has trashed her for almost two decades. Even during this campaign his behavior has been an embarrassment, and MSNBC has been getting a lot of heat over it. Not just from the Clinton campaign, but from media critics, blogs, media orgs, etc.

However, since MSNBC can't or won't fire Matthews, this poor dude is offered up a sacrifice instead.

Snarfangel [TotalFark] 2008-02-09 08:32:03 AM
I_Approve_Of_This_Message: So the Clintons are going to boycott MSNBC? Awesome.

True. Now if we can only get them to boycott every other media outlet, I might not have to wade through so many political advertisements.

Oh, and boycott the phone company, too, so I don't have to listen to robocalls.

mabelkitty 2008-02-09 08:44:02 AM
She's fair game. She's 27, stumping at colleges, and ugly as hell.

When they used her to try and deflect from Monica, nobody said a word about it because she was under age.

If she decides to jump into the fray, she gets everything that is coming to her, and I find it sad that MSNBC caved.

I recall the nasty things printed in People magazine about the Bush twins, so suck it up.

It looks like MSNBC decided to punish Shuster with the dreaded 'airbrush-boarding" torture.

Regardless of how low the Clintons will go to win - pimping is the wrong choice of word and in broadcasting or in journalism, that is unprofessional.

Of course now HillBill will spin this ad nauseam to benefit their campaign - essentially proving Shuster's poorly-worded point.

That's what annoys me about Hillary Clinton: she runs probably the dirtiest campaign on either side, but if you say certain things, she whips out that "OMG I'M BEING VICTIMIZED" card so fast your head spins.

Weaver95 [TotalFark] 2008-02-09 10:39:21 AM
Pimin' out the kid for a few cheap votes - it's the clinton way!
