B-b-but voter fraud!

All those idiots who have been preaching about photo IDs for the past few years seem to forget that your IDs don't matter if people can simply steal and stuff the ballot boxes.

kshilcutt [TotalFark] 2008-02-08 05:36:11 PM
I don't see anything wrong with this. Hillary Clinton (and Bill) have always set a good, honest example and I don't see how their supporters would do anything to jeopardize that reputation before such an important election. This is just the rabid, right-wing media making something out of nothing; it was just a minor oversight, nothing to get hysterical over.

See? This is why we need Diebold to host all elections. It takes maybe five minutes to rig one. No noticable missing votes, no questionable time lapses, just simple clean fraud. You can even do it from your car with a laptop if you're in a hurry.

Seriously though, WTF!?! The state as a whole was within 200 votes, and we're missing ballot boxes in people's houses? When are we going to get our shiat together and allow the UN to monitor elections in this country? I'm seriously starting to think the elections in Iraq and Venezuela were less corrupt than ours here in the bastion of the 'free world'.

I'm all for electronic voting, but here's how:

The machine records votes electronically, but is printing two tickets at the same time the voter can see AND verify. In the end one ticket is output to the voter whom deposits it into a card reader lock-box, the second stays in the machine's locking spool case. In the event of a recount, the tickets can be counted against each other.

That'll cut back on fraud of one type.

jjorsett: So because one type of fraud remains a possibility, there's no point fixing any others? Riiiight.

There you go, downplaying election fraud so you can play up voter fraud.

If you had said something to the effect of "so because one type of fraud happens..." maybe we could reach some agreement, but you appear pretty ideologically opposed to accepting that box stuffing not only happens, but is a much greater risk to our electoral process.

One guy voting as a dead guy every few years is bad, but is a small problem. A candidate destroying hundreds upon hundreds of ballots and replacing them with phony ballots is a huge problem. We should be spending our resources addressing this bigger problem.

FTFY. Seriously, every vote should count. Let's reduce all fraud instead of saying one is simply not important.

But Richard Martinez told Santa Fe New Mexican reporter Kate Nash that the boxes actually spent the night in the homes of three polling-place managers.

So they were shuttling them around between three homes all night? Sumptin ain't right.

Shaggy_C: allow the UN to monitor elections in this country?

We can't. I mean I suppose the UN could be allowed in to offer advice, but it'd all have to be non-binding, non-enforceable. Why? The Constitution. The US electoral process can't be under the control of a foreign body. To allow the UN to actually be in charge of it would require a Constitutional amendment, and I doubt that will be forthcoming.

oldebayer [TotalFark] 2008-02-08 05:50:20 PM
How did I get so lucky? I move from Florida to get away from, among other things, stupid voters, and now here I am in New Mexico.

On the plus side, this "scandal" is really pretty simplistic. The race is super close here, and the Democrats award delegates proportionally, so the "winner" here is likely to pick up at most a single delegate over the "loser," and maybe not even one.

And there was not "a big snowstorm," there was an ENORMOUS snowstorm, the kind that would have brought Washington, D.C. (where I also spent some time) to a total standstill.

Suck it, carpers.

I said 'monitor'. That means the same thing as 'observe'. Obviously our own government has a vested interest in the results and cannot be trusted to count and collect votes. I would have no problem with a 3rd party providing an unbiased approval of methods and results.
