Hey, we'll trade you our George Jr. for yours! C'mon, whaddya say?

Ha!

I never thought about that city having the same name as the candidate until seeing this thread - and that's despite watching the daily morning drama show on NHK where half the main characters are from there and/or still live there.

FTA: "Group that Supports Barack Obama Voluntarily"

LOL

also FTA:

"If Mr. Obama becomes the president, we will form a delegation and try to visit him at the White House. That would be awesome," said Fujihara.

What a cool dude.

In the coastal city of Obama, about 300 miles northwest of Tokyo, some residents formed a support group called "Group that Supports Barack Obama Voluntarily"

It's way better than being in the unfortunate "Group that is Forced to Support Mike Huckabee Through the Threat of Violence from Chuck Norris"

Yes, I voted for Obama. My husband didn't.

In the coastal city of Obama, about 300 miles northwest of Tokyo, some residents formed a support group called "Group that Supports Barack Obama Voluntarily" in early February.

Screw that! I belong to the "Group that Supports Barack Obama Involuntarily" and I have to tell you, it is better than the voluntary one. [ow] I mean, "MUCH better." [ow] REALLY GREAT! I WOULD DIE IF I WERE NOT IN THIS GROUP!

Anyway, if a foreign leader who had the same last name as my hometown was running for office, I think that that would be pretty cool.

Who the hell names a tractor a "Hillary?" What does "Hillary" translate to in Japanese?

FTFA: And the employees of a farming and construction machinery maker in southern Japan are cheering for the candidate whose first name is the same as one of the transportation machines they build and sell: the "Hillary."

"Ride the Hillary '08" is a great campaign slogan.

I'm guessing, "Unstoppable force that shows no mercy to the weak" but that's only a guess.

There is a town in Washington state called "Clinton". Not sure if the former president has ever been there, though.

It's really strange how there is only one Presidential candidate garnering this much international support, yet half the Democratic base fails to understand why that would be a good thing.

Yea, that's a great way to deduce who to elect.

That is almost as bad as my friend from childhood saying 8 years ago "I'm gonna vote for GW Bush cause I think it would be cool to have a president who is the son of an ex-president!"

/no sir, I only need one bullet. thank you

Too bad, when Starscream actually GOT the nomination, he absolutely crumbled under his first internal party dispute.

Why would they name a vehicle something that most domestic buyers would struggle to pronounce? That boggles the mind.

"Mrs. Clinton is just like our Hillary. The machine is small but it can carry any material that weighs up to 660 pounds. Compact and durable isn't Hillary Clinton like that?" said Hara.

Having seen a little Japanese porn, I know they like Bush.

"Mrs. Clinton is just like our Hillary — the machine is small but it can carry any material that weighs up to 660 pounds. Compact and durable — isn't Hillary Clinton like that?" said Hara. WOW. Just WOW! I didn't know she could carry 660 pounds. She must have acquired her strength dragging Bill around. Elect her and scare the bejesus out of the World. She'll make America feared again.

brantgoose 2008-02-08 09:48:06 PM
By the way, the machine is called Hillary because it's named after a character named Hirari, which means "swiftly" in Japanese. Says so in the article. Ha! Ha! That Hirarious. The Japanese have a sense of humour. Not a great sense of humour, apparently. Mind of Mencias grade. Not funny "ha ha". Funny "ouch", I just bit into foil.

I'm up in Sapporo for the snow festival and caught the local media's version of the story last night on TV.

The mayor *does* seem like a cool dude, and they sent Obama a locally made set of shiny chopsticks.

They also showed the local pachinko parlor, aptly named Daitoryo (大統領) which is the Japanese word for president.

I hope when the new PM here goes to the US he brings the Obama mayor with him, that'd be pretty neat.
