Sooooooo....Can I choose NOT to partake in this "Tax Rebate?" I would rather not get an advance on my 2008 taxes, I do not like this idea at all.

And what if I don't get a "tax rebate"?
What if I don't want to give a loan to the government interest-free?
All those people getting their money back at the end of the year are doing it wrong.

Diogenes [TotalFark] 2008-02-08 11:52:14 AM
Oh good grief. Why don't they charge insane interest on it and make it exactly like a payday loan?

Diogenes: Oh good grief. Why don't they charge insane interest on it and make it exactly like a payday loan?

You don't think they will? We pay the government our hard earned dollars. This is like spitting in our face. Where is this billions of dollars coming from? Loans from China maybe? Social Security? One way or another we will have to pay off these billions of dollars with what I'm sure is a hell of a lot of interest.

Kanaloa [TotalFark] 2008-02-08 12:02:22 PM
According to the accountant I just asked, what they are doing is saying that it will be accounted next year as a $600 credit to your non-taxable income.

/its still really confusing
//in other words it won't count against you

bulldg4life [TotalFark] 2008-02-08 12:04:56 PM
I can't wait to be one of those people that is slated for a $500 refund after I got a $600 check this year.

Not necessarily. I use mine as a way to save up and buy something for the house. I know I lose money that I could have made as interest, but if I hadn't put it there, I would have just spent it.

More proof that the Republican party is shifty and lies to the American middle class on an almost daily basis.

Those tax cuts for the upper classes sure are real, though. And if W and his handlers have their way, they'll be permanent.

\there's some lovely filth down here.

nkanofolives: an I choose NOT to partake in this "Tax Rebate?"

So jump it in a CD or some other savings account until next April - problem solved.

madmann [TotalFark] 2008-02-08 12:48:46 PM
By their own figures, FTFA, only one in 4 people plan on spending it right now... 1/4 will save and 1/2 will use it to pay off debt. So that means at best 25% of the money will be used for its stated purpose.

Now add in the fact that a huge percentage of what will be spent will be spent on Wiis, Accords, MitsubishiatVs, Kawasaki motorcycles....

This money is not going back into our general economy. It's a government-mandated money dump that will only end up enriching lending companies and foreign trading partners.

If there is a bright side to this, at least they aren't going into even more permanent debt to give us the money that we already earned. I hope to make enough so that I don't actually have to pay next year. Maybe I can use that money to relocate to another country. Ha HA! There is a great plan.

Where is your tax rebate now?

Why are they acting like they are actually doing something. It is like taking a dollar out of my right hand pocket and putting it in the left one.

Mr. Xhin
Told you so.

Just like last time.

Farking Republicans.

The democrats did this.

The original plan was to give an income tax cut. Because Pelosi wanted (her base) people who don't pay income taxes to get a check, the plan was changed from a tax cut to a free check from the government.

Farking democrats...

Right, you are doing it wrong. Put into a special savings account that you don't take money out of.
Interest = having your money work for you. Why would you give that ability away?

Spanky_McFarksalot 2008-02-08 01:08:27 PM
I think CNN is wrong on this unless the senate decided to change the rules.

Before it went to them, everyone was reporting that it was not an advance on next years taxes.

Is it really in the article or just the headline? It is not in the article that I have a link to. Submitter needs to learn that if you use quotes you should quote the article you link to.

Where in the hell are you getting that quote in the headline from, subby? You horse's ass.

The Democrats dropped demands for an extension of unemployment benefits, energy assistance for low-income households and tax breaks for energy providers

If Congress were opera, the Democrats are the castrati...

Spanky_McFarksalot: Holy crap. I think CNN pulled that out. It was in there.

It was probably pulled because it is not factually correct. The rebate will be considered taxable income in 2008. This is very different than most of the money will be deducted from next years refund.

Looking for a cache...

MudGuster 2008-02-08 01:19:32 PM
From: Link (new window)

"Here's how the rebate works: The lowest income tax bracket (10%) will be eliminated in 2008 only, for the first $6,000 in income. Most Americans will thus have $600 less in tax liability in 2008. However, that money is this year's rebate, which will be mailed to you this spring.

So for instance say your federal income tax is $100/week, or $5,200/year. In spring 2007, you get a $600 rebate check. Your 2008 taxes will drop from $5,200 to $4,600, but because you already got the difference sent to you in a rebate this year, you'll have to pay $5,200 in taxes. Many might have to cough up $600 above their withholding in spring 2009 when they file. The rebate is not a permanent change in taxes; it's just for the one year. Think of it as a prepayment on your 2008 return -- borrowing against next year's refund."

/and yes, CNN removed it from TFA

Spanky_McFarksalot 2008-02-08 01:20:01 PM
Do a Google search "Tax Rebate Advance"

CNN just recently removed it from the article after Google had indexed it.

Glad CNN got it right, I was pissed. I wants my free moneys.

/Again, not subby.

whidbey [TotalFark] 2008-02-08 01:21:06 PM
Spanky_McFarksalot: I wants my free moneys.

My guess is that it probably still isn't "free money" and we'll have to give it back through taxation...
