There's a lot of other reasons to throw our legislators into jail, and none of them have to do with global warming.

Suzuki was only referring to imprisoning politicians.

Hey, I'm all for that, whatever the reason.

It's interesting that I pretty much take it for granted that any time I see an "anti global warming" headline on Fark, it will feature at least a handful of extremely obvious grammatical mistakes and exhibit a level of correlation with the actual article that indicates either borderline illiteracy or outright retardation on the part of the submitter. I may need to publish a study.

Just curious....

Several years ago you were king of "Saddam's WMDs will be found...no....wait....they HAVE been found!". You've seemed to back away from that line of rhetoric since 2005.

Are you STILL beating the "there's no climate change, global warming is a myth designed by liberals" horse or have you backed away from those laughable assertions too?

sigdiamond2000 [TotalFark] 2008-02-08 12:04:25 PM
Random capitalization. Misused punctuation. Ridiculously inflammatory and inaccurate headline.

My friend...I am not about to take a science that is in it's infancy and swallow it hook line and sinker. Especially a science that has adherents such as David Suzuki.

Ok, about the subject matter: Comparing not believing in global warming to a punishable crime is inaccurate.

It doesn't change my commitment to environmentalism.

Happy?

Yeah. All those "degrees" and "science thingies" are just for fools.

The fact that this article comes from an industry rag which fails to grasp "metaphor" (as is noted in the first - filter - post) just shows you how dense the "it's a myth!" folks are.

The residents of Halabja would like to have a word with you.

Even your idiot chimp-in-chief says there's no WMDs in Iraq. But, by all means, continue to assert otherwise. It makes you look soooooooooo smart. Makes ya look like you've got your finger on the pulse of the current news.

Unfortunately, the quote is to short to know what he was saying they should be thrown in jail for. The article asserts it is for something to do with global warming, but they don't have a quote from Suzuki actually saying that.

Odd that they'd cut out the part where he said what they should be thrown in jail for.

This part is also very humorous: Outrageous, yes, but not all that uncommon.

Yeah, I commonly hear about people asking for non-believers of the global warming theory be *jailed*... asshats, the lot of them.

From your article: When asked for further comment, Dan Maceluch, a spokesman for Dr. Suzuki, said that he did not mean the statement to be taken literally.

Since David Suzuki doesn't make or even advise on criminal justice policy I'd say it's pretty likely that he's not serious.

Since the sub-headline on the article you linked to is: Didn't mean it literally says scientist's spokesperson, I'd say it's a certainty that he's not serious.

Way to disprove the point you were trying to make.

I still find it rather disingenuous that the biggest known proponent of the theory of global warming is Al Gore. Why don't we have some big-name scientist as the spokesperson for the issue, and not a politician who has a ton to gain from the theory being universally accepted and acted upon? This flaw is not enough to throw the theory out on its own, but it does make me skeptical.

I don't know. He's like a celebrity spokesperson. And I can't tell if people dislike him because they don't believe in global warming, or they don't believe in global warming because they dislike him.

Sometimes attacking Al Gore and global warming seems akin to someone saying "I'll never donate to Parkinsons research because I hated Michael J. Fox in Doc Hollywood."

Bladel: Only if we can do the same for those denying Evolution, Gravity and Photosynthesis.

Ok, who is denying gravity and Photosynthesis? And where can I join up? We need to repeal the law of gravity, it would save NASA a fortune.

Anyone who believes that the planet will stay exactly the same is not only denying the evidence and not learning from history but they are also denying logic. Anyone who thinks that man is causing it is in the armor and at a full gallop towards the windmill.

Yes, I saw the link to the National Post that in the industry blog. That doesn't change the fact that you really don't know who David Suzuki is, do you?

The Stealth Hippopotamus: Ok, who is denying gravity and Photosynthesis?

Nobody. But wasn't just a couple of weeks ago that there was a thread on a new discovery of a characteristic of gravity not previously known to exist? If it is so set in stone why even bother continuing to research?

This is what bugs me so much about the whole gw thing...Any questioning is dismissed outright...you are either on the take of big oil or stupid and should be thrown in jail (just kidding)...It makes no sense whatsoever in a scientific discussion.

Aside from a very very few actual scientists who are considered pariahs in their fields and aside from a LOT of bought-off "researchers" who are in the employ of large industries, there are 10,000+ actual researchers in the field of climatology who believe that the current global warming trend is man-made and must be addressed.

Do you honestly think that anyone is favoring that we stop studying the climate?

Any questioning is dismissed outright...you are either on the take of big oil or stupid and should be thrown in jail (just kidding)...It makes no sense whatsoever in a scientific discussion.

Scientific discussions take place between the pages of journals and the halls of universities.

What you are describing is court of public opinion, in which a great many people that deny or "actively disbelieve" the science are either stupid or shilling.

If you are interested in a scientific discussion, why don't you read some of the science yourself and talk to me about it?

Why is it that the most vocal critics of anthropogenic warming on Fark are the least knowledgeable about what the actually science says? And moreover are content to not know?

The Stealth Hippopotamus: Anyone who thinks that man is causing it is in the armor and at a full gallop towards the windmill.

What causes someone like yourself to say something like this? Why do you assume that natural variability as evidenced by the historical and paleo records are not accounted for by anthropogenic climate change?

No one is denying natural climate variance. It is that our influence is exceeding it, and if left unchecked, will dominate it causing us to enter a new climatic regime.

No one is saying that the sun doesn't warm the earth, or that the oceans and atmosphere don't redistribute solar energy, or that volcanism can cool the planet.

IPCC? I heard something about them.... what was it.... oh yeah people were suing to get them names taken off that thing....that's right.
Listen, I'm really on the eco side on this one. I love the idea of getting off oil, reusing, and recycling. I want a cleaner planet for my kid. However politicizations (and scientists that have become politicos) that want to drag out a bogyman to scare all the children into behaving is hurting more then it's helping. And discounting everyone that disagrees as tools of Big Oil makes you look like a five year old girl with her fingers in her ears. See how fast this works, all mine are tools of Big Oil? Well all of yours are research hos! There debate done....
Take a second and look at all the conflicting data. Relax. Now live as clean as you can. Do your part. But before the government gets involved and shaits over everything we need proof of not only how we are causing global warming, but by how much! No on is even trying to tell us that. Oh they may say that it is "significant" but when we are dealing with hundredths of degrees what is significant? It does not sound like a scientific answer to me.

They're afraid they'll catch the ghey, or whatever the global warming equivalent is. Thus, ignorance is sweet, sweet bliss.

Jon Snow: What causes someone like yourself to say something like this? Why do you assume that natural variability as evidenced by the historical and paleo records are not accounted for by anthropogenic climate change?

I say stuff like this because anyone. And I mean anyone that wants to believe that they have this all figured out and can say for a fact that this or that is happening with this planet should be laughed at. I mean point at, read faced, can stand up laughed at. Anyone that want to a good hard look at the complexity of a puddle of water and say they know what is going on has an over sized ego. We don't even know how tornadoes are formed. Oh we have a pretty good idea, but we could be wrong.

No one is denying natural climate variance. It is that our influence is exceeding it, and if left unchecked, will dominate it causing us to enter a new climatic regime.

Here is a clue for you. The Milky Way is currently flying though the universe some were between 600-130 km/s. (why not an exact number? 'cause no one agrees). So not only do we need to factor in things on this planet but unknown and unseen factors for the universe. It's far to complex a problem for us to get right just yet.

No one is saying that the sun doesn't warm the earth, or that the oceans and atmosphere don't redistribute solar energy, or that volcanism can cool the planet.

If we were just talking about planets then we may have a chance of figuring it out in our life times. But as far as right now I really don't want any government to start making laws based on something that is not even half baked yet.
