Man, with all the things going afoul in this country, I'm sure glad this guy is choosing to take on the NFL from his Senate seat. I'm sure there are absolutely no other battles he could be fighting right now that just might be slightly more important than churches showing football games or what happened to those Pats video tapes.

Keep up the good work Arlen!

Who would jeebus pull for?

Sorry, but I think this is a waste of taxpayer's time. Why do we need to legally sanction watching sports on a big screen in a farking church? I'm sorry if you have a shiatty TV (or your wife won't let you watch the game). Get off your high horse and go to a sports bar like everyone else. Let's keep the sports out of religion.

Shouldn't Specter be fighting to restore some of the Legislative Powers that the Executive branch has been taking over?

If Arlen wasn't such a farking AW, I'd agree with the HERO tag, but he's nothing but a typical AW.

Fark him.

If we're going to waste time legislating sports, why can't we mandate a playoff in college football.

Let's all keep in mind, not only do these churches set up a big screen and show the game, they Charge Admission to get in.
Charging admission to get in to a place of worship is the exact reason Jesus braded a whip of cords and beat the priests and busted up their tables and tents.
Its amazing to me how stupid your average Christian is and how little he knows his own religion.
Here's a bit of visual pollution by the freeway between Cincinnati and Dayton Ohio we locals refer to as Big Butter Jesus, among other names.

I thought that was because they were charging admission to come in to worship. I am sure that there was some praying going on in that room (some gambling too, but lets leave that alone for now). But I doubt they were charging to go into the sanctuary.
That could have been funny if they took down the big cross up front to make room for the tv.

Yeah, but, you don't know how to interpret the Bible, THEY do.

At least that's what everyone claims.

I normally like this Senator, but WTF? In the middle of everything happening in the world and the United States, he think the Senate needs to spend time giving religion another exception to the rules? Jackass.

Churches should just buy bootleg movies and have movie nights as well. Undercut the theater by five bucks, keep the profits, then call some windbag politician to make it legal for them.

Can't wait for a sports bar to put up a cross and tell the NFL where they can stick their "license fee" to show games.

The exemption is that the congregation can perform a hymn in church without worrying about the copyright holder coming down on them for an unauthorized public performance.

Munchausen's Proxy 2008-02-08 01:45:37 PM
Arlen sure has a hard-on for screwing with the NFL - Go for it.

LocalCynic 2008-02-08 01:49:41 PM
Ridiculous. This bill would allow the NFL to continue their abuse of the copyright law and their flagrantly ridiculous "copyright warnings." If the government wants to make a difference, they could tell copyright holders to quit providing ridiculous notices.

dhudd 2008-02-08 01:51:23 PM
This law is unconstitutional before it gets out of committee - unreasonable seizure of the NFL's property.

Hell, they don't have a right to do this anyway. The NFL should be able to sue them. Well, according to current copyright law abuses anyway. Don't waste time on this, just fix copyright overall.

Which is why post-Christian Europe and America won't be a nation of atheists or agnostics, but of pagans.

Who wants to read Dawkins at a stuffy bookstore when down the street the local Pagan Priest is running the Superbowl on the big screen after we dine at the altar of a hot red-head?

Hideously Gigantic Smurf 2008-02-08 01:54:53 PM
Okay.

No, seriously, okay.

I'm all for Separation of Church and State, it's one of the tenets of American democracy.

But there's nothing in the Federalist Papers about "Seperation of Church and Sport".

So Specter was on sports radio yesterday talking about spygate (which is apparently a big concern to him) and I just so happened to catch it. He said something like, "among my numerous other duties in the senate, I have plenty of time for this". He's such an ass.

Priorities senator, read up on them.

wowzer97pooh 2008-02-08 02:12:33 PM
The NFL needs to go after bars next. I hear there are bars that filled to brim with trademarked sports gear and even TV's that show NFL games. That's right games, not game. Disgusting.

Tommy Moo 2008-02-08 02:17:22 PM
I don't get it. What could the NFL possibly have to gain by barring an enthusiastic group of people from watching their product and the ads that come along with it? How many people do you suppose don't care about the Superbowl, but would have gone and watched it just because it was a party? I'm guessing a whole lot of women to begin with.

Do the ads somehow become invisible when viewed on a large screen?

Well, if, as someone said below, the Church was charging admission . . . people tend to get all pissy about shiat they control for money.

Even if the bill passes, the churches that the NFL is going after are still just as liable for any infringement that occurred before the law takes effect.
