"Mental retardation" is a legitimate medical term.

Patsy Ticer (D) better have "senile" struck from the books as well before everyone figures her out.

Sounds like some of the VA Senate maybe "Intellectually Disabled"

USP .45: "Mental retardation" is a legitimate medical term.

So was idiot and moron at one point. Every time they come up with a kinder gentler term for the "intellectually disabled", it gets turned into a derogatory reference.

Robo73 [TotalFark] 2008-02-08 09:29:37 AM
That's retarded.

EvilEgg: it gets turned into a derogatory reference.

So all we need to do is keep using their terms to deride people and we can get the dumbasses to keep changing their terms?

Maybe we should start using "politician" as a derogatory word.

With nothing better to spend their time and money on, VA Senate bans the term "Mentally Retarded" in VA laws. Replaces it with "intellectually disabled" "Creationist".

That's better.

/Would have also accepted "Member of Congress"

Which is probably why they really changed it, as most likely there were some groups of developmentally disabled people getting denied funding for things because they weren't mentally retarded. That's certainly been the case in other states.

I had a hearing before a Social Security Administrative Law Judge just yesterday afternoon. The 20 year old woman has borderline intellectual functioning, not mild mental retardation. The judge took between 5 and 10 minutes to explain what mental retardation was to my client, using the word "retarded" at least 25 times. It was an extremely boring lecture concluding that she wasn't retarded. However, I couldn't help but think that my client, with her 75 BIF IQ could not understand what he was talking about, and thought she was learning for the first time in her life that she was retarded from a judge in an administrative hearing. The term "retarded" has serious negative conotations, and I try to avoid using the term if I can even if my client actually IS retarded (usually mildly mentally retarded). The judge in my opinion, showed an incredible lack of tact. I felt bad for my client.

Tony, the retarded kid who bags groceries, knows he's retarded. He'll tell you himself.

This may be going to far. I always thought "Sex Crazy and Retard Strong" would make a great t-shirt, but I'd never have the guts to wear it in public. I could just see the look on Tony's face now.

"Intellectually disabled" sounds much worse to me than "mentally retarded." Retarded means slow, I can dig that. Being intellectually disabled is what happens to you when someone takes a sledgehammer to your skull.

Molavian 2008-02-08 10:16:20 AM

Meh. I worked at a vocational business that helped train and place developmentally disabled people (Traumatic Brain Injury [TBI], Mild to Severe Mental Retardation [MMR-SMR], Autism and Aspergers.)

Aside from being one of the best experiences of my life, I learned that the terms mean very little. In most cases they simply demonstrate the knowledge (or lack thereof) of the person using them.

Not a bad thing. Just can tell how people cope with something that can be uncomfortable.

/Hated the job, loved the clients.

Unfortunately it's the prize for being the dumbest State Senators.

Abusive driver fees, banning sangria, and trying to ban low riding pants. Keep up the good work morans.

I'm the parent of an intellectually disabled kid living in VA, so I'm really getting a... no, not really. I'm kinda glad to see the term go, as I do indeed find it kind of repulsive, but it sure ain't something that's at the very top of the list of shiat that needs fixin' in this state.

In 30 years they will be removing "intellectually disabled" from the laws as an offensive term.

I had a summer job teaching riflery at a camp for intellectually handicapped adults. It was one of the scariest summers of my life.

That's another one that to me seems to get more severe sounding as it progressed, not less. "Battle fatigue" is a limp term that sounds like being tired after a long hike. "Traumatic stress"? That's getting a little closer.
