Sigh...When I tell people I'm a fan of BOC I always get "Oh more cowbell?" Isn't that joke kind of old now. It's like going around imitating Austin Powers..

You know what would be awesome? Will Ferrell making a surprise appearance as Gene Frenkel when they play "Don't Fear the Reaper". In theory, Christopher Walken could also make an appearance as the Bruce Richardson, but that's probably more awesome this universe could stand without ripping the time/space continuum.

The thing is, they embrace the whole "cowbell" thing with a lot of humor. I imagine its actually been a big boost for their career.

I know what you mean though. They are a fantastically under rated band with a lot of subtlety, and its kind of a shame their legacy has been reduced to a catchphrase.

I saw BOC at "Ribfest" in Kalamazoo last summer, and for old guys, they still rock! They had a contest with a local radio station and the winner got to play cowbell during "Reaper" on stage with the band.

I'm old enough to remember buying Agents of Fortune when it came out on vinyl.

We saw these guys at a fair in VT - triple header with Joan Jett and foghat (!) It was really fun and thanks to the cowbell sketch the kids were familiar and enjoyed the entire show.

Still one of the funniest SNL skits ever. Will Ferrell is pure genius.

I basically bought Rock Band for my Xbox 360 solely so I could play Don't Fear the Reaper and rock the cowbell.

ON TOUR SINCE '74!

How's this for pure poetry?:

The junkies down in brooklyn are going crazy
They're laughing just like hungry dogs in the street
Policemen are hiding behind the skirts of little girls
Their eyes have turned the color of frozen meat

No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no
Joan crawford has risen from the grave
Joan crawford has risen from the grave

Catholic school girls have thrown away their mascara
They chain themselves to the axles of big mac trucks
The sky is filled with herds of shivering angels
The fat lady laughs, gentlemen, start your trucks

Oh no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no
Joan crawford has risen from the grave
Joan crawford has risen from the grave

Pure brilliance, no?

Cities on flame, baby, cities on flame .....

My heart is black, and my lips are gold
Cities on flame with rock and roll
Three thousand guitars they seem to cry
My ears will melt, and then my eyes

Wouldn't that make the best/stupidest/awesomest tobbstone inscription?

But yeah, while the cowbell thing is getting old, the thing to remember is that first of all, it WAS hilarious and done with much love towards the band, and second, the band embraced it big time. It's nowhere near as aggravating and sad as Queen embracing Wayne's World.

Playing in the dirt after the Rodeo?
They need to make "I'm on the Lam, but I Ain't No Sheep" their opener, just to set the ground rules.

For the record, while it is true that Sabbath Rocks and Maiden Rulez, there is no band cooler than Blue Öyster Cult. Merely seeing their name in print will make you measureably closer to coolness. Why, since I started listening to Blue Öyster Cult, I have become so cool that I have to drink my oxygen, so hip that I need a periscope to see over my pelvis, an so with it that people ask it if it's with me. Furthermore, after many years of enjoying their music I can drink beer thaat doesn't taste like weewee and still attract supermodels.

I've seen BÖC probably five times in the last decade, and Buck Dharma has only gotten better. I'd pay good money to see him, Mark Knopfler, and Walter Becker do a guitar duel.

ghoulie_mask: Cities on flame, baby, cities on flame .....
Awesome Bass riff on that one.

Their new Bassist is the shiznit. The man is an animal. Ought to be chained up. Amazing stuff.

I dig the BOC. I have:

Blue Öyster Cult
Tyranny and Mutation
Agents of Fortune
Spectres
Mirrors
Cultösaurus Erectus
Fire of Unknown Origin
The Revölution by Night
Club Ninja

... all on vinyl. "Cultösaurus Erectus" is my personal fave, with "Agents of Fortune" a close second.

They're very underrated, IMO.

I still have On Your Feet or On Your Knees on vinyl....Robbie Krieger guesting on Roadhouse Blues. Saw them on Agents of Fortune Tour...did Born to Be Wild for an encore, all five of them came on stage on motorcycles....TOO AWESOME

BOC still rocks hard, tho they're on the low-rent circuit these days (UPAC is pretty greasy). Great show, Pat Travers opened and rocked the cowbell on DFTR. My daughter's 1st concert, she was 13 at the time and loved it.

I didn't listen to em much... but my band (in high school, 1985)
made me learn BOC's "Burning For You". Im glad they did, it sounded nice.
A good, laid back, mellow rock song to throw in between Athletico Spizz 80's
"Where's Captain Kirk" and Iron Maiden's "Revelations" in our setlist.

I've seen suns that were
freezing and lives that
were through
And I'm burnin', I'm burnin',
I'm burnin' for you

I'd reverse this.

But I celebrate their entire catalog. (Only album I don't have is Imaginos, and I have all of it on MP3)

I've only seen BOC twice, but the second time was amazing. It was about two years ago, and just fantastic work from everybody from start to finish. I just about went berserk at the fact that their finale was "Black Blade", big Elric nerd that I am.

One of the best moments of the show: some drunken tool from the audience climbs up on stage and starts rocking out like an idiot. Without saying a word or even really looking at each other, the bass player and one of the guitar players each reach out a hand and push him. I should call it a shove, considering how he flew, but they made it look so effortless. Didn't miss a note, either. Hilarious.

Extremely under rated band, one of my favorite classic rock acts...

And yes, the cowbell thing was funny the first time but it's gotten really old.
