$800 a month for food? No receipts required for purchases under $500?

Yeah, no wonder some of these MPs are fighting against transparency.

Sounds legit - a fish tank is just a container for food.

I see some Brits engaging these politicians in a calm and rational manner. From what I understand of your country, you are doing it wrong - you must convince the government that this hurts your feelings.

I spent one summer a few years back working on a government grant in Florida. I think I got $32/day per diem. As a cheap grad student, I probably ended up spending about $5-10 a day on food, so by the end of the summer I had saved up a bunch of money and bought a new cell phone, camera, and receiver.

/still a better and probably more cost-efficient system than paying people to look over a ton of receipts
//if I had to submit receipts I would have eaten more expensive food, so there would be no net gain for the gov't (taxpayer)

Perhaps "freedom-of-information campaigner Heather Brooke" has some suggestions about somewhere else these MPs could be getting their nourishment.

Eating decently (not even 'well') is a good 10$/meal minimum.

10$/meal*3 meal/day * ~30 day/month = 900$/month.

Of course, I'm poor, so I only eat one meal a day and try to cut it down to 5 to 7 dollars, but honestly if you think paying elected officials enough for three square meals a day at the equivalent of a high-end fast-food place is unreasonable, I think you need your brain checked.

Strange, I work to get money to buy food. MPs, it seems, work to get money and then get expenses to buy food. Sweet!

Every single meal, every day they're in office? If they're on a business trip and can't eat at home, sure. But otherwise, why should the taxpayers pick up the tab for every meal they eat?

What, they don't buy groceries over there?

These are Expenses - the food they're buying is only on 'business' - they get a wage of at least 60k, plus up to 22k in expenses

i've met an MP, they're not worth 82k, like pretty much anyone who earns that much
