Hey RIAA:

Fark you sideways with a rake.

Oh, and I'll install that software if, and only if, it includes a statement by the RIAA that, by doing so, I completely and forever am insulated from any liability for possessing pirated products.

I promise you that, faced with that choice, the RIAA would collectively start backing up towards me and begging for the rake.

Mac users seen asking "anti-what?"

Virus. It's one of those things that you'd have if more than ten people used Macs and if anyone using a Mac ever did anything interesting enough to make it remotely worth (1) spying on, (2) interfering with or (3) sabotaging.

Bill_Wick's_Friend 2008-02-07 05:52:41 PM
So he's suggesting bundling spyware in with an anti-virus or other necessary software package?

Where do I sign up!? Can I install this even though I'm already running BonziBuddy and Gator and AZE Toolbar?

/clearly retarded

The day after ISP's begin mandatory filtering for torrents and p2p files, some 15-year-old freckly nerd will figure out a way to circumvent it.

Ryan2065 2008-02-07 06:36:43 PM
I more read this as a threat:

"Why would somebody put that on their machine? They wouldn't likely want to do that, they'd do that when it benefits them such as for viruses and so on and so forth...it could be enforced at the modem or put in by the ISP."

Reminds me of buying "protection" from the mob.

My first instinct upon reading this was a low growl...

Wow, talk about an unexpected and emotional response.

Not sure if the RIAA has quite figured out that the computer and the internet aren't just a really fancy phongraph machine. Not so good with the techno-savvy.

Naah. It's one of those things Macs would have more of, if there weren't millions of much easier targets all over the place. Yes, Macs are more secure by default. Yes, there are such things as Mac viruses. But your 1,2,3, are all BS.

spencurai 2008-02-07 07:47:30 PM
The RIAA just doesn't understand that they will never win...they cannot fight a battle that they cannot even begin to comprehend. The recording industry just needs to stop fighting it's customer base and give us what we want!

/doesn't know what I want
//has trouble concentrating for extended periods of time
///wants tickets to Celine Deon
////so I can sell them to some old people

40oz_A_Knight 2008-02-07 07:47:53 PM
If the RIAA can track me through the proxies and shell accounts that I use, they're welcome to try to prosecute me (forgetting for a moment that most of what I download is out of print and in most cass the artists encourage duplication). Meanwhile, big bad RIAA stooge Comcast can't even filter my bittorrent traffic effectively.

geosprint 2008-02-07 07:48:50 PM
How 'bout an antivirus virus????

OozoSoozo 2008-02-07 07:49:01 PM
RIAA: Stop downloading music illegally!

Everybody: No.

RIAA: Look, we're prosecuting people! Stop downloading music illegally!

Everybody: No.

RIAA: Look, we came up with this great anti-virus program which incidentally stops you from downloading music illegally! Install it on your 'puter, dudes!

Everybody: No.

When will they ever learn?

Meh, we've already got it. HTTPS SSL connections, and SSH Proxies.

You can't filter what you can't see.

LOL! Mac users are so easy to troll.

I can hear their collective panties twisting.

Kiliana 2008-02-07 07:52:02 PM
Seriously, the RIAA needs to realize that the only power they have is to distribute over-produced pop shiat to teenyboppers who will accept it. Anyone with a brain has already given up on buying thier shiatty offerings.

/Don't worry, mac viruses will come out when macs become the majority again, then PCs will be safe.

This "license to listen" scheme seems to have so many unintended consequences. Difficulty of enforcement, user resentment, braving new territory in copyright law that is not designed for this sort of situation...

The cynical part of me would chalk this up to the RIAA being greedy...

Nightmaretony 2008-02-07 07:55:04 PM
damn, was about to submit this one. Need to read Fark more often :D

Still definitely one of the stupider ideas around. If they offer a free membership and 100 bucks per month of downloading from iTunes, sure, I would go for it. As is, I use my own solution to RIAA.

Buy CDs used of popular groups.
Buy CDs new of indie groups
Download public domain performances of classical music.

Works for me :D

If you do buy CDs, check here to see if they are released by a member of the RIAA .

Thank you Woz and Steve!

llewyrr [TotalFark] 2008-02-07 08:01:12 PM
I take back the open source thing. This is what happens when you comment without thinking.

There's is going to be just a free for everyone, right? Morons. As long as there's an alternative, why would you bother?

/Random side comment: How does The Matrix qualify for AMC?

Person 2008-02-07 08:01:26 PM
And if you're not stealing copyright infringing the RIAA's property, you're worried about what exactly?

OK, it's still a massively stupid idea and gives rise to all kinds of privacy concerns, but still. Simply don't download things illegally and you significantly cut down your chances of being sued.

down4afall 2008-02-07 08:01:50 PM
*spins the brilliant idea wheel*

"Bill, the wheel says we should quit suing college students and disband the organization. The offset cost back in royalties more than makes up for any loss to piracy, in fact, artists will take home more money."

"That makes sense, Steve, but do you want to look for another high paying job where you don't do anything but accuse people of stealing from the people you pretend to represent?"

*Spins the wheel again*

"We're back to the antivirus idea."

"Go with it, I've gotta go have dinner with my secretary."

pliantkitchen 2008-02-07 08:02:00 PM
I think he compared the software he wants to implement to something akin to A/V software
I don't remember hearing anything about merging antivirus software with content-filtering mechanisms

AVG's not open source.. It just happens to be free for home users..

And a pretty decent anti-virus program, too..

Solon Isonomia [TotalFark] 2008-02-07 08:02:47 PM
OozoSoozo: When will they ever learn?

Under the guise of copyright protection, the RIAA and the MPAA want us, the consumer to pay every time we use their property - AKA music, movies, TV shows, etc. Remember DiVX at Circuit City? Paying for every instance we watch, listen, or read something is taking the "license to use" scheme to its logical conclusion.

It's not shearing the sheep, it's skinning them.

Befuddled 2008-02-07 08:03:03 PM
So can people or corporations then sue the RIAA when they get hit by a distrubuted DDOS attack because people have stopped using anti-virus software, letting their computers get hijacked?
