Nick Drake was the Syd Barrett before Robyn Hitchcock

Looks like the older John Cleese jumped back in time to say hi for the video.

Poor Nick. He just missed the James Taylor singer-songwriter uprising. His management should've brought him to the States.

karnal wtf????

Syd Barrett--Robyn Hitchcock connection is obvious but Drake is not even remotely similar. Lyrics, composition and themes are way different.

Great,here we go AGAIN:

Let the mongrels creep out in droves--

"music snob" and "elitist" and "hipster" accusations.....etc....**yawn**

try listening to a record. his first one, "five leaves left" is a good start. or just listen to "pink moon," the song that made him posthumously famous.

Nick Drake is the Eva Cassidy of the UK.

Not quite as moving, though. Sorry.

Pretty good summation. Only reason I had heard of him was because I was working at a college radio station when Pink Moon came out. It was in the slush pile of albums that were going to be tossed and I took it home with a handful of others. It's the only one I kept. I was sad when his obit ran in Crawdaddy.

Kinda odd that he's now a star.

You notice no connection between the three? Have you not heard The Madcap Laughs? What if I threw in solo John Lennon into the mix? Seeing the big picture now?

FlashHarry: try listening to a record

I don't know which record it was but I did try listening to one. I found pretty boring. Not bad, just boring. But then again, I don't know too much about music.

Three Hours
At The Chime Of A City Clock
One Of These Things First
Pink Moon
Fruit Tree
Northern Sky

When I got into his music I knew that he died young. But I had no idea it was before I was born. His music has a timeless quality that will keep people listening forever.

Eva Cassidy was an amazing singer with a really beautiful voice. However, that's about all she had. Nick Drake was an amazing song writer. (Also a guitar player, and to some degree an innovator of a new musical style.) Go to music schools around the U.S. and you'll find new Eva Cassidy's left and right. You'll even find great singers by watching American Idol. Really. There are amazing singers around this country. Artist like Nick Drake are hard to come by.

Having said that, I'll go listen to Eva Cassidy right now.

Glenechocreek: Poor Nick. He just missed the James Taylor singer-songwriter uprising. His management should've brought him to the States.

I understand that Nick Drake wasn't too enthusiastic about performing and success. He rarely played in front of an audience. Probably didn't even have a propper manager.

there is no actual live footage of Nick in existence, is there ?

Nope.

BTW, his sister Gabrielle is a fairly well-known actress in Britain. Run an unfiltered GIS for her and you'll get some nice spank material.

Northern Sky is, to me, one of the most beautiful songs about love ever written. If not THE most beautiful.

Darlin' be home soon - Loving Spoonful would be my number two...

"From the Morning" tops my list of Drake tunes.

Doesn't everyone have a Nick Drake phase nowadays?

I know I did. I still love the music, but not with the rabid intensity of a college student.

/alternate guitar tunings FTW!

I hate it when students bring in his stuff to work on. I like the music...but his tunings were seemingly random, so sometimes I have to arrange them for standard tuning. (Which, to be fair, is bizarre anyways.)

Wow, you have students who want to learn his style? Bless their little hearts. You've gotta be an accomplished player to even approach the sounds he got, in my opinion; it's just so idiosyncratic and personal. Well, good luck teaching them!

manbeard 2008-02-07 04:04:24 PM
If you can play Cello Song, you can get any girl. Seriously. Whenever I play acoustic sets I throw that in and some "The Body Breaks" by Devendra Banhart and there isn't a dry panty in the audience.

On the other hand, I'm not sure that Nick Drake would approve of using his music to pick up girls.

His voice is okay. His music is depressing.
One of the 50 best?
I'd like to see the other 49 and then state an opinion of whether he fits.
He was more a songwriter than a singer.
Not bad, just depressing.

An hour after reading this thread I remember I'm wearing my Nick Drake tshirt...

Some of my favorite songs by him are Things Behind the Sun, Black Eyed Dog, and Clothes of Sand.

There is a definitely a "I'm hip and listen to Nick Drake" thing for a lot of people, then there was the VW commercial that also got him a lot of attention. But if you ignore all that, it's just really good music.

Tacopants 2008-02-07 09:22:01 PM
I liked "Orange Sky" (new window.. don't pay attention to the video) by Alexi Murdoch when some people said he's an inferior Nick Drake. Even after listening to few of the Nick Drake song recommendations, I find "Orange Sky" better.

Will I be ridiculed by hipster elitist music snobs now?
