We must put a stop to this NOW, for the sake of the children. STOP THE MUSIC!

Agree. All reference to sex, violence, and substance abuse must be censored immediately. It is the only morally correct course of action.

And, I must say, I listen to 2-3 hours of music a day and I'm pretty sure that I don't hear 30,000 references to substance abuse in a year. Kids should quit listening to awful mainstream rap.

Ya see, the kids today, they listen to the rap music which gives them the brain damage. With their hippin' and their hoppin'and their bippin' and their boppin'. So they don't know what the jazz is all about.

Please kids, do yourself a favor and put the rap down.

My stepson asked me to buy him 'Soul Survivor' by someguy.

I purposely downloaded the spanish dance remix for him.

It's just damn good reggae, mon.

"Pass me the green I need some weed with my hennessey.."

How many references to substance abuse is that? Does it count as 1 per substance?

Mike Greenwell 2008-02-05 06:21:14 AM
"Follow me and do exactly what the song says:
smoke weed, take pills, drop outta school, kill people and drink
And jump behind the wheel like it was still legal"

/Just asking.

AgentOrangeDrink 2008-02-05 06:22:30 AM
Pfft, the Clipse mixtape I just downloaded probably has 30,000 drug references on it alone. Step your drug game up kids.

El_Tremendaso 2008-02-05 06:25:29 AM
Any music that relies on drug references sucks just because they can't think of real lyrics.

Hans Delbrook 2008-02-05 06:26:57 AM
So, someone under 15 or older than 18 listening to the same music for the same amount of time will hear a different number of references?

I'd like to know the technology behind this.

wildcardjack 2008-02-05 06:28:26 AM
"When your mom and I were young we were poor. We used to smoke weeds and watch the radio"

DsRsF 2008-02-05 06:29:02 AM
Frankly speaking, are 30,000 drug references enough?

I think there needs to be more.

Sumdumfarkr 2008-02-05 06:31:05 AM
Laqst time I saw a teenager listening to "music," all I heard was:

BOOM! THUD! BOOM! BOOM! THUD! rattle. rattle.
BOOM! THUD! BOOM! BOOM! THUD! rattle. rattle.
BOOM! THUD! BOOM! BOOM! THUD! rattle. rattle.
BOOM! THUD! BOOM! BOOM! THUD! rattle. rattle.

I guess it's some kind of "code" for drug use?

2-3 hours a day? If I listened to the pablum kids these days are served up, I wouldn't make it 20 minutes.

I listen to at least 6-8 hours a day. So far, since I got home from work, DVDs of...
-Janis Joplin - The Kozmic Blues
-Zappa - Quaudiophliac
-Miles Davis - Copenhagen 1969
-and random tracks from Agnostic Front, Sabbath, Buckethead, and Ritchie Havens

/get off my eclectic lawn

drummer45 2008-02-05 06:42:38 AM
FTFA: "Medical researchers have reviewed the words of the 279 top songs of 2005 to estimate just how common they are."

This was their first mistake.

"Seventy-seven percent of rap songs tracked in the study contained such references, along with 36 percent of country songs."

Good, the only genres piles of music crap I can't stand have seemingly more substance abuse than others. Break out the crack pipe.

What was that dirty blues song from the 1930's?
"Gimme a reefer, and a bucket of beer..."?
Some fat black chick sang it.
Great song.
There ain't nothing new about it.

NotoriousHIV 2008-02-05 06:48:34 AM
I hope they don't think of banning every song that has a drug, sex, or violence reference in it. That'd probably be about 85% of all music. And the people that banned it (people around 50 or higher)would be pissed cause almost every song before the 1980's is about some type of drug and/or sex.

BTW, I listen to music a good bit, but 2.4 hours a day?

Fill every glass for wine inspires us
And fires us with courage, love and joy
Women and wine should life employ
Is there ought else on earth desirous
Fill every glass for wine inspires us
And fires us with courage, love and joy

Fill every glass for wine unites us
And lights our good cheer and company
Music the food for heart and soul
Is there ought else so dear we hold
Fill every glass for wine unites us
And lights our good cheer and company

Fill every glass for wine inspires us
And fires us with courage, love and joy
Women and wine should life employ
Is there ought else on earth desirous
Fill every glass for wine inspires us

So what is that number if you're a big Layne Staley fan?

Artificial red, smoke, poison consumed
In the House of Ill Repute
Is this the way I spend my days
In recovery of a fatal disease
...
What's My Drug Of Choice?
Well, What Have You Got?
I Don't Go Broke
And I Do It Alot
...
Candles Red I Have A Pair
Shadows Dancing Everywhere
Burning On The Angry Chair
Little Boy Made A Mistake
Pink Cloud Has Now Turned To Grey
All That I Want Is To Play
Get On Your Knees, Time To Pray Boy

What kind of moran takes his/her life philosophy from pop music, especially when it may lead to an unsavoury end? Perhaps it's just a convenient way of weeding the gene pool.

Being stoned in this song is being literally that,(with stones) or being put upon or put down.

I wouldn't pay twenty-five cents to go in nowhere 'cause listen here)
Up in Harlem ev'ry Saturday night when the high-browns git together it's just too tight,
they all congregates at an all night
strut
and what they do is tut-tut-tut
Old Hannah Brown from 'cross town gets full of corn (whiskey) and starts breakin' 'em down
Just at the break of day you can hear old Hannah say,
"Gimme a pigfoot and a bottle of beer"
Send me gate
I don't care
I feel just like I wanna clown
Give the piano player a drink because he's bringin' me down
He's got rhythm, yeah!
When he stomps his feet, he sends me right off to sleep
Check all your razors and your guns
We gonna be rasslin' when the wagon comes
I wanna pigfoot and a bottle of beer
Send me 'cause I don't care
Slay me 'cause I don't care
Gimme a reefer and a gang o' gin
Slay me, 'cause I'm in my sin
Slay me 'cause I'm full of gin
Check all your razors and your guns
Do the
shim-sham shimmy
till the risin' sun

-Bessie Smith

Seven references to substance abuse in a single song! That's why the "Greatest Generation" had all those wars and stuff.

What's the use of getting sober,
When you're gonna get drunk again?

Oh Sam done something fine,
When he bought that good whiskey, beer and wine.
I love my whiskey and I love my gin,
Every time you see me I'm in my sin.

So what's the use of getting sober,
When you're gonna get drunk again?
