Glad I wasn't the only one that noticed that.

You mean someone actually watched the half time show?

Billy Ligue 2008-02-04 12:17:53 PM
Tom Petty, there's a guy that should perform with a sack over his face

Sometimes a guitar is just a guitar.

I noticed... thought it was funny.

Tom's getting old, but they rocked pretty hard.

I was glad he didn't die during the show. Sadly, his voice has been dead for years.

BigDaddy1978 2008-02-04 12:19:11 PM
Where I was, the entire bar noticed that.

/Suck it New England.
//Long and hard.

Hey - just be glad he didn't sing Free-Ballin instead of Free Fallin

tom petty is on my list of living musicians i'd like to toke with.

Some people have entirely too much time on their hands.

That was the first thing I thought when I saw it as well. To bad the pubes landed on Tom's face.

free balling would have been much better. Damn...is there no group out there to play in the Super Bowl that is not ancient and has some decent tunes?????

Masterstuff 2008-02-04 12:21:17 PM
Yeah, caught that too.

I counted down to it when it happened:
"5, 4, 3, 2, 1, WE HAVE PENETRATION!!!"

Gwendolyn [TotalFark] 2008-02-04 12:21:19 PM
That's an arrow you twit.

Spindle 2008-02-04 12:21:44 PM
I liked Tom Petty's set, I thought the guitar solos spiced up the songs, which we've all heard too many times to count.

I also came to the realization that Tom Petty totally has it made, music wise. His songs require no stress and no change in tempo. In short, he can just mumble his way through any of the songs in his catalog. He'll be able to sing those songs until he dies even long after he mumbles like Bob Dylan.

That was the most obvious phallic symbol I've ever seen. Also, everyone at the party I was at sang "Free ballin'."

Another NEVER tedious super bowl halftime show courtesy Tom Petty! What? Another mid-tempo rocker? Color me tickled pink!

WhoIsWillo [TotalFark] 2008-02-04 12:23:30 PM
I think this will be a new halftime tradition. I mean, remember Prince last year?

Also, Tom Petty looks like Jim Henson. That is all.

A small reference or a reference to a small phallus?

We all noticed it.
Neat. Dicks exist, and you can see them anywhere if you look for them.
Get over it, world.

Tom Petty is a small phallic reference.

diamond2a 2008-02-04 12:24:36 PM
small?

hardly, did anyone not think giant penis?

coprolite 2008-02-04 12:24:46 PM
Petty has a bigger one than Prince.

quetzl jity 2008-02-04 12:25:15 PM
the wife and i noticed that immediately.

penis - vagina

/obvious

NewsFlash 2008-02-04 12:25:16 PM
Guess I'm in the minority, but I'd rather watch Tom Petty than Prince or Justin/Janet, so I had a good time.

/Sorry about your musical taste.

I heard after the game he sang "Even the Losers"

Sym_pathetic 2008-02-04 12:25:56 PM
Has the world gotten so hyper-sensitive that a guitar flying towards a heart has to mean something sexual? It's Tom Petty and the Heart Breakers. It could also be an arrow, seeing how that's their symbol.

rancidPlasma 2008-02-04 12:25:59 PM
Yes, he rocked, but he carries no stage presence at all. I gotta say Jacko's SB show was one of the best ones I've seen.

inkling79 2008-02-04 12:26:05 PM
Tom Petty is your god and you will bow before him.

quatchi 2008-02-04 12:26:27 PM
American Girl/ Won't Back Down/ Free Fallin'/ Runnin' down a Dream.

The First Superbowl half time show America doesn't have to be ashamed of.

Made up fer the sucky commercials almost.

markie_farkie [TotalFark] 2008-02-04 12:26:55 PM
With a beard like that, you'd think he had given up on the music scene and was writing a manifesto in some tar-paper shack in the woods...

schnarff [recently expired TotalFark] 2008-02-04 12:26:56 PM
The wife and I have a sort of a side pursuit going for concerts -- we're making it a point to see every band that just shouldn't be playing any more whenever we get the chance (prime example: we saw Cheap Trick at the 9:30 Club in DC a couple of years back). Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are *way* up on that list...both because they've got no right to be playing any more, and because as true as the foregoing statement is, it'd probably still be a fun show to go to.

MFL 2008-02-04 12:27:10 PM
It was plain, simple, and sounded great. What more do you want?

Great Gonzo 2008-02-04 12:27:15 PM
Funny, but that is ACTUALLY the shape of a Flying-V headstock. Nothing to see here. Move along.

Mr.Poops 2008-02-04 12:27:15 PM
If Janet Jackson's "malfunction" never happened and people weren't always looking for sexual allusions during the halftime show, people wouldn't have thought anything about the guitar arrow piercing the heart.

assistant regional manager 2008-02-04 12:27:50 PM
I thought it was a pretty good show. Cool set-up with the heart and the (albeit phallic) arrow, and everyone running to the stage. (I did worry about people getting trampled, but that's because I'm a girl, but I was informed that they practice running so I guess it's okay.)

Anyway, Tom Petty did look pretty darn old, but the songs appeal to a relatively wide group of people and the flashlights and fireworks were cool.

/easily entertained

My friends and I thought he sounded really good considering his age. Perhaps he played to attract new fans?

ginko 2008-02-04 12:28:24 PM
My husband was also singing "free ballin". I've never heard that before, must be a guy thing.

/who knew you can learn stuff about your spouse while watching the superbowl.
//favorite commerical bit was the screaming cricket. The rest sucked.

I noticed and was just waiting for the religious right-wing prudes to make a fuss. Sometime a guitar is just a guitar, get your mind out of the gutter!

/Petty put on a pretty good show in my opinion.

He writes it on the tour bus.

He'll show them, he'll show them all!
