I snowboard and ski at an expert level, and can tell you that 98% of the people on sloped don't do any of this stuff (at least on the more difficult slopes).

The ones that you need to watch out for (at least in New Mexico) are the Native American employees that are off duty. These guys are absolutely nuts, are generally awkward and uncoordinated on the slopes, and have little to no regard for their fellow boarder/skier. I don't know what their problem is, but that group is easily the worst.

Now to sit back and watch the skier vs. snowboarder flamewar...

/takes no sides
//snowboarding's harder, but less dangerous

OOooooh... a skiers vs. snowboarders thread.

Hey newbie skiers... pick a line or consistent turns so we can ALL plan how to get around your slow non-skiing asses. Some to you newbie snowboarders.

The person downhill has the right of way, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't be considerate to those above you. Nothing sucks more than watching the people in front of you carry controlled turns until you get right up on them and they start changing their pattern.

No way in hell. Go up on spring break and watch all the texans trying to ski in their cowboy hats with skin tight, starched, and scotch-guarded Wranglers.

If you're skiing (properly), your eyes are pointed down the fall line and you can see everyone to each side and downhill. You can't do that on a snowboard, and that's why they turn blindly into my path, panic, and proceed to fall down in front of me. The ski areas pack so many people in that I get tired of having to yell 'left' or 'right' 50 times to riders who can't see where they're turning.

Neuffy 2008-02-03 07:19:02 PM
I ski at a high level, but mainly snowboard (alpine).

It doesn't seem to matter whether it's a snowboarder or a skiier: People just are incapable of yielding to those below them, and frequently pass close on the blind-side of a boarder.

Both groups have numerous individuals who are incapable of maintaining control, bombing down the mountain.

When you've been in a steady pattern down a groomed path, yeah: you really, really should do an uphill check before changing your pattern. Unfortunately, that alone won't save you - people still expect you to be precient. I'm always stunned (although by now I shouldn't be...) that people expect someone doing even, symmetrical S curves to change their pattern to avoid a bomber who can't/won't slow down.

/uses Bomber bindings

Only crappy skiers and riders aren't aware of their surroundings in all directions. But, yelling 'on your left' or 'on your right' is just a good idea and makes the mountain safer. I do it to skiers as well.

A snowboard is simply the wrong tool for the job. No argument needed...simply watch them flop around the mountain.

"Blue" is a term used to describe things off-color or sexual in nature.

"Stag" movies (another term used for the same) were often called "Blue movies".

Now get off my slope!

(Slope was a term for people of Asian descent. It was most commonly used during the Vietnam war)

Most "slopes" do not ski (there is little powder in southeast Asia)

F-bomb? I think you can figure that out yourself.

As a formerly sponsored snowboarder. I'm gettin' a f%#*in' kick out of this article... because it's true.

There are a lot of people up in the mountains. A lot more than there was 10 years ago. There are some days when I'm in line and I hear ski/snowboard punks talking about how, "farkin' awesome" or how, "you shoulda' seen that shiat, bro."

I feel bad for that mom in line who's taking her kid, who hasn't heard words like these before, up the lift.

One of my favorite activities was getting irie on the lift. Now my friends and I have reserved that for the trees. And for Pete's farking sake, don't spit loogies on the lift towers, it's filthy. Have some respect for those around you and mind your P's and Q'S! Sheesh.

I only get to 'shred' 1-3 times a week now that I've had to become responsible adult. But I cherish all the time I get to spend on the mountain. The lift lines... They live a lot to be desired.

/ALWAYS try to get some action in a gondola.

Maybe it's just me, but wouldn't being plopped across the middle of a run be a lot like volunteering for broken ribs if not a potential Darwin Award?
Not that I'd use a snowboard anyway, I have a nice spare 51 Plymouth hood I keep around, though an old school fridge door works pretty good once you take the handle off.

If resorts were smarter, they would set up some way station areas with a deck and benches at various parts down slope. The socializer will use them and stop congregating on the slope.

I stopped going when I had to start carrying a handgun on the slopes simply to avoid continued physical assaults for being a skier on the "boarders runs". Gang turf wars weren't my idea of a fun family outing.

The skier vs. snowboarder thing has only calmed down because the skiers just stopped going and left the slopes to the morans.
I used to enjoy the slopes that limited or banned boarders, now they give them free run and do nothing to curb their behaviors.

Hey experienced skiers and boarders, especially the ones who insist on going down green runs: stop cutting off newbies. Recognize that everybody has to learn at some point. If I'm obviously having trouble and going in a certain direction, go behind me, not in front. Dumbasses. You aren't impressing anyone.

donutbandit 2008-02-03 08:21:49 PM
Snowboarders are roundly hated at my local resort. The solution is simple. Runs for snowboarders only, runs for skiers only. Neither one allowed on the other. They could get creative at designing the snowboard runs. Why don't they do it?

1. Too simple a concept for them to grasp.

2. Costs money.

I really don't get the "skiers vs snowboarders" thing. There are dirtbags, assholes, and pricks among both groups. It's just that young people tend to lean towards snowboarding these days and there are more idiots among the under 20 crowd then above it.

I ski and snowboard, novice level really, never had any problems but then again I usually go boarding with more skiers in the group then snowboarders.

mamoru [TotalFark] 2008-02-03 08:59:42 PM
On the one hand, I really hate snowboarders who stop in the middle of the slope to sit and chat, have a cigarette, make a phone call, etc... ESPECIALLY when they do it just over a rise so you can't see them until you are practically on top of them...

But on the other hand, thanks to idiots like that, I now have a nearly superhuman ability to stop on a dime on my snowboard.

Seriously, though, what is it with people sitting in the middle of the course? Etiquette aside, you think that it would register somewhere in those little brains that sitting with your back to people coming down a hill at high speeds strapped to planks of wood is not a good idea.

Seriously, skiers and snowboarders alike, if you want to stop and take a break, move over to the edge of the course. Pretty farking simple concept.

entropic_existence: I really don't get the "skiers vs snowboarders" thing. There are dirtbags, assholes, and pricks among both groups.

In my limited experience, butthead boarders are mostly just kids who are oblivious to politeness. Not actually deliberate jerks, just kids who don't know yet how to interact among groups of strange adults. Of the true assholes I've seen, who make me want to carry a gun and hide the body, the vast majority have been skiers, with no excuse - they're just assholes.

(I ski, don't board (yet))

Are you seriously saying that you keep a loaded and deadly weapon on your person because you feel you and your family's life is threatened by snowboarders?

You consider yourself justified in shooting a young and un-armed person simply because you are unable to ski where you want?

I am hardly a "Gun Grabber" but anyone who would claim that a gun is necessary on a ski slope is exhibiting behaviorv that would at best be considered "anti socal" and at worst "crazy".

In my experience, it has very little to do with what's on their feet and everything to do with what's in their head. I snowboard three to five times a week, and my biggest problem is with certain age groups. 12 to 15 year old boys are the most disrespectful group on the slopes. And people with rentals are far less courteous of other people's stuff. You get three fourteen year olds with rentals behind you in the lift line and suddenly your board's got at least one more chip that wasn't there earlier. And I really cannot stand people who stand around in the middle of the slope, not hurt, just waiting for their kid (yes, parents are TERRIBLE with this) or friend. At least once a day, I have to say, "Not the best place to be standing, buck-o".

I get really frustrated with the glares I get from older skiiers, like my snowboard means I'm rude and thoughtless.

/end rant
//sorry.
